Taxonomy & naming
Poecilia waiapi was described by Bragança, Costa and Gama in 2012, in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 22, pages 337–343), from material collected in the lower Jari river drainage of northern Brazil. The holotype, a 0.5 in standard-length male, is held at the Instituto de Pesquisas Científicas e Tecnológicas do Estado do Amapá (IEPA 2763), with a 1 in female paratype at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ 8141). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Poecilia waiapi Bragança, Costa & Gama, 2012 as the valid name, placed in the genus Poecilia within the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers.
The species belongs to the small-bodied South American assemblage of Poecilia — the lineage centred on Poecilia picta and Poecilia parae, sometimes treated under the name Micropoecilia — rather than to the larger mollies. In the original description the authors hypothesised that P. waiapi is most closely related to Poecilia branneri, Poecilia minima and Poecilia sarrafae, the four species sharing eight derived (apomorphic) character states. The specific name honours the Waiãpi (Wayampi) indigenous people of the Jari and Amapá region where the species was discovered.
Because the species is recent and known from only a small collection of wild specimens, much of its biology has not been formally documented. Where firm data are sparse, this account stays close to the original description, to FishBase's compilation of it, and to what can be inferred reliably from its close relatives among the small South American livebearers.
Morphology
Poecilia waiapi is a very small, fusiform poeciliid. The type material indicates that females reach about 1 in standard length and males are smaller, around 0.5 in, placing it firmly among the miniature members of the genus — far smaller than the mollies and somewhat smaller even than a typical wild guppy. The body is of normal, slender build, without exaggerated depth.
The diagnostic feature is found in the males: a series of vertical dark grey bars along the flank. These bars set the species apart from all of its congeners — they are absent in Poecilia bifurca, Poecilia picta and Poecilia parae, and only faint, pale grey in Poecilia sarrafae, Poecilia minima and Poecilia branneri. A second distinguishing mark is a densely pigmented post-humeral blotch behind the gill cover. As in other poeciliids, the sexes differ further in the anal fin: in males the anterior anal-fin rays are modified into a gonopodium, the rod-like intromittent organ used in internal fertilisation, while females retain a normal fan-shaped anal fin.
Colour beyond these markings is not richly documented for the wild fish. Detailed live colouration, the structure of male display patterning, and any geographic variation across the drainage remain undescribed, and are flagged here as data sparse rather than guessed at.
Habitat
The species is known from the lower Jari river drainage in northern Brazil, in the border region between the states of Amapá and Pará, with the type locality in the Jari basin of Amapá. This is lowland Amazonian and Guianan-shield country, where the Jari flows south toward its confluence with the lower Amazon. FishBase characterises the species' environment as freshwater, pelagic and tropical.
Small South American livebearers of this lineage typically occupy shallow, warm, slow-moving or still waters — stream margins, pools, swampy backwaters and ditches — often among vegetation and leaf litter. No published water-chemistry measurements specific to P. waiapi were available for this account, so precise temperature, pH and hardness figures for its native waters are not asserted here; the broad expectation is warm, soft, often acidic blackwater-to-clearwater conditions typical of the lower Jari, consistent with the tropical lowland setting.
The known range is narrow, which is part of why the species' conservation status remains uncertain. Whether the apparent restriction to the lower Jari reflects genuine endemism or simply limited sampling effort across a poorly surveyed region is not yet resolved.
Feeding
No direct study of the diet of Poecilia waiapi has been published. FishBase places it at an estimated trophic level of about 2.6, derived from its relatives, which marks it as a low-level omnivore feeding mainly on small items rather than a predator of larger prey.
By analogy with other small South American livebearers, the species can be expected to graze on algae, biofilm, diatoms and fine detritus and to take small aquatic invertebrates, micro-crustaceans and insect larvae — including mosquito larvae — from the water column and surface. Such fishes are continuous, opportunistic micro-feeders rather than animals that take occasional large meals.
For the rare aquarist who keeps wild-type small Poecilia, the practical implication is a diet of fine foods offered little and often: powdered or micro flake, crushed pellet, and small live or frozen foods such as Daphnia, microworm and newly hatched brine shrimp, with a share of algal matter. These husbandry notes are inferred from close relatives; species-specific captive data for P. waiapi are not available.
Mating
Like all poeciliids, Poecilia waiapi reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, the slender organ formed from the modified anterior rays of the anal fin; there is no external spawning of eggs. This single feature — the gonopodium and the internal insemination it permits — defines the reproductive biology of the family and separates the livebearers from the egg-scattering toothcarps.
In the small picta–parae group to which this species belongs, males are typically persistent in pursuit of females and combine brief courtship with sneak mating attempts, and females are able to store sperm internally so that a single insemination can fertilise more than one successive brood. The vertical flank bars and the post-humeral blotch that diagnose male P. waiapi are presumably involved in signalling to females or to rival males, as colour and bar patterns are in related species, though no behavioural study has tested this.
Specific mating behaviour, the role of female choice, and any display repertoire for this species have not been described, and are noted here as data sparse rather than inferred in detail.
Breeding
Poecilia waiapi is viviparous: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing young and gives birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. The small species of this South American lineage are generally lecithotrophic livebearers, in which the embryo is nourished mainly by yolk laid down in the egg before fertilisation rather than by an extended maternal supply during gestation. Superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages — occurs in some poeciliids but has not been reported for this species, so it is not claimed here.
The original description does not state brood size or gestation length for P. waiapi, and these have not, to current knowledge, been published elsewhere. Given the very small adult size, broods are likely to be modest — a small number of fry per cycle — and gestation on the order of a few weeks, as in comparable miniature livebearers, but exact figures are not available and are not invented. FishBase rates the species' resilience as high, with an estimated minimum population-doubling time of under fifteen months, which is consistent with the rapid, continuous reproduction typical of small livebearers.
As in other poeciliids, the newborn fry would emerge as fully formed miniature fish able to swim and feed at once, and would need cover from predation — including by adults of their own kind. Documented captive breeding of this particular species appears to be absent from the literature.
In the aquarium
Poecilia waiapi is essentially a wild research fish rather than an established aquarium species; it is not a fixture of the hobby and reliable husbandry accounts specific to it are not available. FishBase populates no aquarium or reproduction data for the species, and the practical notes here are extrapolated from its close relatives among the small South American livebearers.
A keeper of wild-type small Poecilia would aim to recreate warm, well-vegetated lowland conditions — soft, gently acidic to neutral water in the mid-to-high 20s Celsius is a reasonable starting point for fishes of this region, though no measured optima exist for this species — in a quiet, densely planted tank with calm tankmates of similar size. The fish's minute adult size means it is suited only to nano aquaria and would be lost or outcompeted among larger community fishes.
Anyone working with this species should treat it as a conservation-sensitive wild animal of a narrow, poorly surveyed range: stock should come only from responsibly collected or captive-bred sources, and the fish should never be released into non-native waters, where small livebearers establish readily.
Conservation
Poecilia waiapi is assessed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment dated 7 November 2018 (species ID 140651614). The Data Deficient category means there is not enough information on the species' distribution, population or threats to judge its risk of extinction — not that it is necessarily secure. CITES and CMS list the species as Not Evaluated, and it is regarded as harmless to humans.
The uncertainty reflects how little is known: the fish is recently described, recorded from a restricted part of the lower Jari drainage, and has not been the subject of dedicated population survey. A narrow known range in a region under pressure from land-use change and large infrastructure projects means a precautionary view is warranted, but the absence of data is precisely the point of the listing.
The most useful contribution an aquarist or naturalist can make is to support and not undermine the gathering of better information: documenting verified occurrences, avoiding uncontrolled collection of a little-known species, and never releasing aquarium livebearers into wild waters. Until further fieldwork resolves its range and abundance, Poecilia waiapi remains a species defined as much by what is unknown about it as by what has been described.
