Poecilia wandae is a short-finned molly of the Maracaibo Basin in north-western Venezuela, split off from the broader Poecilia sphenops complex by Fred Poeser in his 2003 revision of the mollies. It is one of those species that exists more clearly on the page of a systematic monograph than in the aquarium trade: a plain, hardy, algae-grazing livebearer whose biology can be read confidently from its molly relatives even though almost nothing has been published about its own broods or behaviour. Its name is a quiet joke — the fish is named for a friend of its describer who liked to be called "Wanda."

Taxonomy & naming

Poecilia wandae was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Fred N. Poeser in 2003 as part of his systematic work on the mollies — the short- and sailfin Poecilia of the subgenus Mollienesia. Before that revision, the molly-type livebearers of northern South America were lumped under broad, much-used names such as Poecilia sphenops, and the Maracaibo Basin populations had no separate identity. Poeser's study of museum material across the genus recognised several regionally distinct forms as species in their own right, and the Maracaibo fish became Poecilia wandae. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the name as valid (species id 67328) within the genus Poecilia, the New World livebearers of the family Poeciliidae.

The genus name Poecilia derives from the Greek poikilos, "many-coloured" or "dappled," a reference to the variegated patterning typical of these fishes. The species epithet wandae is an eponym: Poeser named the fish after Vanda Marisa Freitas de Leite, a friend who preferred to be called "Wanda." The common name in circulation, used by FishBase and the Encyclopedia of Life, is "Maracaibo toothcarp," after the basin the species occupies.

Phylogenetically the species sits within the short-fin molly lineage (Poecilia in the strict sense / Mollienesia), close to Poecilia sphenops and its allies. Because the molly complex has been repeatedly re-arranged and many of its members are externally similar, P. wandae is best understood as a geographically circumscribed member of that group rather than a strongly distinctive fish — its claim to species status rests on the regional revision rather than on a single conspicuous diagnostic trait visible in the aquarium.

Morphology

Poecilia wandae is a small, short-finned molly of the generalised Poecilia sphenops body plan: a moderately deep, laterally compressed body, a rounded caudal fin, and the modest, unelaborated fins of a wild short-fin molly rather than the raised dorsal sail of a sailfin species. FishBase records no measured maximum length for the species and gives only a length-weight relationship (a = 0.00851, b = 3.15 for total length in centimetres); by the standard of its short-fin molly relatives a wild adult would be expected in the rough region of 2.5–3 in, but no firm figure is published, so the size here is best treated as data-sparse.

In colour the species is plain by molly standards — typically silvery to olive or grey-brown, sometimes with faint rows of spots along the flanks, in keeping with wild short-fin mollies that lack the heavy melanism of domesticated black mollies. As in all poeciliids the sexes differ. Males are smaller and slimmer and carry the gonopodium, a rod-like intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays; females are larger and deeper-bodied and, when carrying young, show a darkened gravid region at the rear of the abdomen.

Because the species is not in the ornamental trade and has not been the subject of a detailed descriptive aquarium account, fine morphological detail — fin-ray counts, exact coloration of breeding males, regional variation within the Maracaibo Basin — is not readily available outside the primary systematic literature, and the safest summary is that P. wandae looks like a typical wild Maracaibo short-fin molly.

Habitat

Poecilia wandae is endemic to the Maracaibo Basin of north-western Venezuela — the large lowland drainage system feeding Lake Maracaibo, including the rivers that descend from the surrounding ranges into the basin. FishBase classes it as a freshwater, benthopelagic, tropical fish, and the molly group as a whole is notable for its tolerance of marginal conditions: warm, often still or slow-moving lowland waters, ditches, pools, river margins and coastal lowland habitats, sometimes including slightly brackish stretches near the coast.

No published per-population water-chemistry data exist for P. wandae specifically, so its preferences are inferred from its lowland tropical range and from the broad tolerances of short-fin mollies generally: warm water in the mid-20s Celsius, and the neutral-to-hard, alkaline conditions that mollies typically favour. Mollies are among the more salt-tolerant freshwater aquarium fishes, and a Maracaibo-Basin species can reasonably be expected to handle a degree of hardness and mineral content; precise figures, however, are not on record.

The species' restriction to a single basin makes it geographically narrow even though it is ecologically a generalist. That combination — a hardy, adaptable fish confined to one drainage system — is common among the regional mollies that Poeser's revision separated out, and it is the kind of distribution that makes a species locally abundant but globally restricted.

Feeding

Like other short-fin mollies, Poecilia wandae is a low-trophic-level omnivore that leans herbivorous and detritivorous. FishBase assigns it a trophic level of about 2.6, consistent with a diet built mainly on algae and aufwuchs — the film of algae, diatoms, microbes and trapped detritus that coats submerged surfaces — supplemented with small aquatic invertebrates and whatever edible particles the fish can graze or sift from the substrate and water column.

Mollies in general are persistent, near-constant grazers, equipped to rasp algal films from rocks, plants and wood, and this aufwuchs-feeding habit is one of the defining ecological traits of the group. There is no species-specific dietary study for P. wandae, but its trophic placement and its membership in the short-fin molly lineage make a primarily plant- and detritus-based diet a safe characterisation.

In an aquarium setting the species would be expected to behave like its molly relatives — accepting prepared flake and pellet foods readily, but doing notably better with a strong vegetable and algal component in the diet, alongside occasional small live or frozen invertebrates. As with all mollies, a diet too heavy in protein and too light in plant matter tends not to suit them well over the long term.

Mating

Poecilia wandae reproduces by internal fertilisation, the defining reproductive mode of the poeciliid livebearers. The male's anal fin is modified into a gonopodium, a slender, mobile intromittent organ through which packets of sperm are transferred directly into the female; there is no external spawning and no egg-laying. As in other Poecilia, females are able to store viable sperm internally for extended periods, so a single successful mating can fertilise several successive broods without the female needing to re-mate.

No courtship or mating behaviour has been described specifically for P. wandae, but the short-fin mollies follow a well-known pattern: males pursue females more or less continuously, combining brief display with repeated copulation attempts using the gonopodium, while females exercise some degree of choice over which males succeed. Sexual dimorphism — smaller, gonopodium-bearing males and larger, deeper-bodied females — underlies this system, as it does throughout the genus.

Among livebearers, superfetation — the ability of a female to carry two or more broods at different stages of development simultaneously — occurs in some lineages, but it is not a documented feature of the short-fin molly group to which P. wandae belongs, and there is no record of it for this species. The conservative position is that P. wandae practises the standard poeciliid pattern of internal fertilisation with sperm storage and single-cohort broods, without superfetation.

Breeding

Poecilia wandae is viviparous: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to fully formed, free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. The Encyclopedia of Life records the species as sexual and livebearing, and notes that, like other Poecilia mollies, its young are lecithotrophic — nourished by yolk reserves laid down in the egg rather than by a placenta-like maternal connection — which distinguishes the mollies from the matrotrophic livebearers such as Heterandria and Poeciliopsis.

No brood-size or gestation data have been published for P. wandae itself; these details simply have not been studied. Reading from its short-fin molly relatives, a gestation on the order of three to five weeks (temperature-dependent) and broods ranging from a few dozen up to roughly a hundred fry in large, well-conditioned females would be unsurprising, but these are general molly figures rather than measurements of this species, and should be treated as such.

The newborn fry of mollies are relatively large and immediately able to swim and feed, taking fine foods, algae and small invertebrates from the outset. As in essentially all poeciliids there is no parental care, and adults — including the mother — will readily eat fry, so in the wild dense vegetation and structural cover are what allow young to survive. Any aquarium breeding of the species would follow the standard livebearer approach of providing heavy cover or separating gravid females.

In the aquarium

Poecilia wandae is not a fixture of the ornamental trade — it is known primarily from systematic and faunal work rather than from hobby commerce — so there is no established body of aquarium experience specific to it. What can be said is framed by the well-understood husbandry of short-fin mollies, which the species should resemble closely.

Mollies are generally robust, adaptable community fish that do best in warm, hard, alkaline water with good filtration and a steady supply of algae or vegetable food; many keepers find them happiest with some mineral content in the water, and the group's tolerance of slightly brackish conditions is well documented. A Maracaibo-Basin short-fin molly would be expected to share these requirements: warm water in the mid-20s Celsius, hard and alkaline chemistry, plenty of grazing surface, and a roomy aquarium given that even modest mollies are active, sustained swimmers.

Because this species is essentially absent from the trade, the practical note for an aquarist is mostly one of identification and provenance: most "black mollies," sailfin mollies and shop "mollies" are domesticated hybrids or other Poecilia species, not P. wandae, and a genuine Maracaibo P. wandae would arrive only through specialist livebearer channels or wild-collected stock. Its care, if kept, would track standard short-fin molly practice rather than anything peculiar to the species.

Conservation

Poecilia wandae has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; its status is Not Evaluated. FishBase, drawing on Red List reference version 2025-2, reports no assessment for the species, and there is no numeric IUCN assessment page for it; it is likewise Not Evaluated under CITES and CMS. The absence of an assessment reflects the species' obscurity and recent description rather than any positive judgement about its security, and no formal conservation status should be inferred from it.

FishBase characterises the species as having high biological resilience — a population doubling time of under fifteen months — and a low vulnerability to fishing (about 10 on a 100-point scale), both of which are typical of small, fast-breeding livebearers. These traits suggest a fish that can sustain or rebuild its numbers readily, but resilience metrics are not a substitute for a population assessment, and they say nothing about habitat-level pressures.

The more meaningful conservation consideration for P. wandae is its restriction to a single drainage. As a Maracaibo Basin endemic it is geographically narrow, which means its fate is tied to the condition of that basin — a heavily developed, oil-rich and pollution-stressed system. A species confined to one such drainage warrants attention even when it is locally common, and the honest summary is that P. wandae is data-deficient in practice: under-studied, unassessed, and known mainly from the systematic literature that named it.
