Taxonomy & naming
Poecilia wingei was described in 2005 by Fred Poeser, Michael Kempkes and Isaäc Isbrücker, in a paper titled "Description of Poecilia (Acanthophacelus) wingei n. sp. from the Paria Peninsula, Venezuela" published in Bijdragen tot de Dierkunde. The species belongs to the family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae, and is placed within the subgenus Poecilia (Acanthophacelus) — the same subgenus that contains the common guppy, Poecilia reticulata. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Poecilia wingei Poeser, Kempkes & Isbrücker, 2005 as the valid name.
The generic name Poecilia derives from the Greek poikilos, "of many colours," an apt label for these brilliantly patterned livebearers. The specific epithet honours the Danish biologist Dr Øjvind Winge (1886–1964), a pioneer of yeast genetics who also carried out early work on the inheritance of colour and sex in guppies. The popular name "Endler's livebearer" commemorates Dr John Endler, who collected the fish in Venezuela in 1975 and introduced it to the hobby; the species circulated among aquarists for three decades under that name before receiving its formal description.
Endler's livebearer is extremely closely related to the guppy and the two will interbreed to produce fertile offspring — the "Endler guppy" hybrids of the trade. Because of this, hobbyists distinguish pure, wild-line stock (so-called Class N Endlers) from hybrid stock, and the species' status as fully distinct from P. reticulata has at times been debated. The current consensus, reflected in the Catalog of Fishes and FishBase, recognises P. wingei as a valid species in its own right.
Morphology
Endler's livebearer is a very small fish showing strong sexual dimorphism. Males are the spectacular sex: slender, fusiform and vividly polychromatic, patterned with bold patches of metallic orange, iridescent green, black and blue arranged in lines and blocks along the flanks, with the colour often extending into the tail. Females are larger, plainer and more robust, a uniform tannish-silver with a rounded abdomen and no comparable patterning. The body is of normal, streamlined build; the dorsal fin carries 6–7 soft rays and the anal fin 9.
FishBase records a maximum standard length of about 1 in for the female, while aquarium observations tend to give larger total-length figures — males commonly around 1 in and females up to roughly 2 in. The discrepancy reflects both the difference between standard length and total length and the larger size reached by well-fed aquarium and line-bred stock. By any measure, this is among the smallest commonly kept aquarium fishes.
The defining male structure, shared with all poeciliids, is the gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to transfer sperm to the female internally. As in the guppy, no two wild males carry exactly the same colour pattern, and this individual variability, paired with the fish's tiny size, is much of what makes the species so prized.
Habitat
Poecilia wingei has an extremely restricted natural distribution, known from the Campoma and Buena Vista (Laguna de Patos) lagoon systems on the Paria Peninsula in north-eastern Venezuela. The species occupies warm, tropical freshwater that is benthopelagic in character — fish living and feeding through the water column near the bottom — in shallow coastal lagoons and connected pools, some of which carry a fringe of brackish influence.
This confinement to a few coastal lagoons is the central fact of the species' biology and the reason for its conservation listing: the entire wild range is small, fragmented and close to areas of human development and habitat alteration. Outside these lagoons the species does not occur naturally.
The water of these habitats is warm and tropical year-round, and the fish tolerates a broad span of chemistry. In the hobby this translates into a famously forgiving species: Endler's livebearers accept a wide range of pH (broadly from around 6.5 to 8.5) and almost any hardness, and can be kept at ordinary room temperature without a heater. As with the guppy, this physiological flexibility makes the species easy to keep but also means that, if released, it could establish itself readily outside its native range.
Feeding
Endler's livebearer is an omnivorous micro-predator. In its lagoon habitat it takes small invertebrates, insect larvae, algae and detritus from the water column and surfaces — the unfussy, opportunistic diet typical of small poeciliids. Its trophic level is low, reflecting a mixed plant-and-animal intake weighted toward small prey and grazed material.
In the aquarium the species is undemanding and not at all picky. It thrives on good-quality flake, micro-pellets and gel foods, and relishes small live and frozen items such as Daphnia and newly hatched brine shrimp; it will also pick at algae and biofilm on plants and surfaces. Because these are tiny, near-constant grazers, several small feedings a day suit them better than one large meal, and a varied diet improves both colour and breeding condition. Overfeeding, rather than underfeeding, is the more common husbandry error.
Mating
Like all poeciliids, Endler's livebearer reproduces by internal fertilisation. Males do not build nests or defend territories; instead they pursue females almost continuously, transferring sperm by means of the gonopodium, the modified anal-fin organ. Male courtship is persistent to the point of relentlessness, which is why aquarists keep a surplus of females — typically two or three females per male — so that no single female is harassed without respite.
Females can store viable sperm internally, so a single mating can fuel several successive broods without the renewed presence of a male. This combination of constant male courtship, internal fertilisation and sperm storage is the same mating system that makes the closely related guppy a textbook model in studies of sexual selection, where female preference for brighter, more vigorously displaying males drives the evolution of male colour. In Endler's livebearer the same dynamic underlies the extraordinary, individually variable male patterning that the species is famous for.
Breeding
Poecilia wingei is a viviparous livebearer: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing young and gives birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. With a single pair, broods appear roughly every 23 to 30 days, the interval shortening in warmer water. Thanks to stored sperm, a female can deliver multiple broods in succession from one mating, and the species breeds readily and almost continuously under good aquarium conditions.
The newborn fry are fully formed miniature fish, able to swim and feed from birth. As with guppies, the parents — including the mother — will eat their own young, so survival in a community or breeding tank depends on cover: dense planting and floating plants give the fry refuge and markedly raise the number that reach maturity. The fry grow quickly on finely powdered foods and newly hatched brine shrimp, with males beginning to show colour and develop the gonopodium within a few weeks.
Because Endler's livebearer interbreeds freely with the guppy to produce fertile hybrids, breeders aiming to maintain pure stock must keep the two species strictly separated. Maintaining wild-line (Class N) Endlers is as much about isolation from guppies and other Endler strains as it is about the straightforward mechanics of raising the fry.
In the aquarium
Endler's livebearer is an excellent beginner's fish: tiny, brilliantly coloured, peaceful, exceptionally hardy and very easy to breed. A group is comfortable in a small aquarium of around 5 to 10 gallons, and because the fish tolerates ordinary room temperature, it can be kept without a heater in many homes. As with guppies, a female-skewed ratio of two or three females per male is recommended to spread out the males' persistent courtship.
The species is peaceful and makes a good community fish alongside other small, gentle tankmates — small tetras, danios and corydoras catfish are all suitable. Water chemistry is undemanding: the fish accepts a wide range of pH and hardness and prizes stability and cleanliness over precise numbers. The main husbandry caution is population control, since the fish breeds so freely, and — for those who care about pure stock — keeping Endlers well away from guppies to avoid hybridisation.
Conservation
Poecilia wingei is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, under criteria B1ab(iii,v), with the assessment dated 8 March 2021. The listing is driven by the species' very restricted range: it is known only from the Campoma and Buena Vista lagoon systems of the Paria Peninsula in Venezuela, a small and fragmented area subject to habitat alteration and human pressure. A species confined to so few small water bodies is inherently vulnerable to local degradation, pollution and changes in water management. The species is not evaluated under CITES or CMS.
There is a striking contrast between the wild and aquarium status of Endler's livebearer. In its native lagoons the species is genuinely threatened, yet in the hobby it is abundant, easily bred and globally distributed. This makes responsible aquarium keeping a modest contribution to the species' security — captive populations are not a substitute for protecting the wild lagoons, but they ensure the fish itself is in no danger of disappearing.
The same hardiness and fecundity that make Endler's livebearer thrive in captivity also make it a potential invader. As with the guppy, the responsible position for an aquarist is never to release unwanted fish into local waters, where this adaptable little livebearer could establish itself outside its native range and disrupt local communities.
