Poeciliopsis lucida is a small live-bearing toothcarp from the Pacific drainages of north-western Mexico, where it occupies the warm streams of the Río Mocorito and Río del Fuerte basins running to the Gulf of California. Modest in size and unassuming in colour, the clearfin livebearer is nonetheless one of the most scientifically important fishes in its family: it is the sexual host whose males supply the sperm that triggers reproduction in the all-female unisexual lineages of the Poeciliopsis monacha-lucida complex, one of the landmark systems for the study of clonal reproduction and matrotrophy in vertebrates.

Taxonomy & naming

Poeciliopsis lucida was described by the American ichthyologist Robert Rush Miller in 1960, the author who did more than anyone else to document the freshwater fishes of Mexico and the south-western United States. It belongs to the genus Poeciliopsis, a New World group of livebearing toothcarps in the family Poeciliidae (subfamily Poeciliinae), within the order Cyprinodontiformes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Poeciliopsis lucida Miller, 1960 as the valid name for the species.

The genus name Poeciliopsis combines the Greek poikilos, "with many colours," with opsis, "appearance" — literally a fish resembling the colourful Poecilia. The species epithet lucida is Latin for "clear" or "bright," echoed in the English common name "clearfin livebearer." In Spanish the fish is known as the guatopote del Mocorito, after the Río Mocorito basin from which it was first characterised.

Within the genus, P. lucida is best known as one member of the monacha-lucida complex, a cluster of sexual species and the unisexual all-female lineages derived from hybridisation between them. That association has made the species a fixture of the reproductive-biology literature, and its scientific profile far outstrips its profile in the aquarium hobby.

Morphology

The clearfin livebearer is a small, plainly coloured poeciliid showing the marked size dimorphism typical of the family. Males are the smaller sex, reaching only about 1 in in total length, while females grow larger, to roughly 2 in. The body is the slender, slightly compressed form characteristic of Poeciliopsis, adapted to life in flowing and standing freshwater of the lowland subtropics.

As in all poeciliids, the sexes are readily told apart by the anal fin: in males several of its rays are modified into a gonopodium, the rod-like intromittent organ used to inseminate the female, whereas females retain an ordinary fan-shaped anal fin. Gravid females develop a darkened patch toward the rear of the abdomen as embryos mature inside them.

The species is not a strongly ornamented fish — there are no bold spawning colours or extended finnage of the kind that make some livebearers showpieces — and detailed colour data for wild populations are sparse. Its translation into research importance, rather than visual appeal, is what has kept the species in the literature.

Habitat

Poeciliopsis lucida is endemic to north-western Mexico, restricted to the Río Mocorito basin and the Río del Fuerte drainage, both of which empty into the Gulf of California in the state of Sinaloa. This places it squarely in the Pacific slope drainages of subtropical Mexico, a region of warm, often seasonal streams.

FishBase classifies the species as a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of subtropical climates — that is, one that ranges through the water column but stays associated with the stream bottom rather than the open surface. Precise field measurements of temperature, pH and hardness for its specific localities are not well documented in the cached sources, so figures here are kept conservative and reflect the general expectation for warm Sinaloan lowland streams rather than measured envelopes.

Its narrow, two-basin distribution is part of why the species' conservation status is uncertain: a fish confined to a small number of drainages is intrinsically more exposed to local habitat change than a widespread generalist, even where present-day populations appear secure.

Feeding

In the wild Poeciliopsis lucida feeds on small aquatic invertebrates; FishBase records amphipods among its prey. Like most small poeciliids it is best understood as an opportunistic micro-predator and omnivore, taking the small crustaceans, insect larvae, and associated organic matter available in its stream habitat.

Detailed dietary studies specific to this species are limited, so finer breakdowns of plant versus animal matter are not asserted here. The general poeciliid pattern — frequent grazing on a mixed diet rather than infrequent large meals — can be assumed.

In captivity, where the species is kept mainly by specialist livebearer enthusiasts and in research colonies, it would be expected to accept the standard small-fish fare of quality flake, micro-pellets, and small live or frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia and brine shrimp, with a varied diet supporting condition and breeding.

Mating

Reproduction in Poeciliopsis lucida is internal, as in all poeciliids. The male inseminates the female using the gonopodium, the modified anal-fin organ that transfers sperm directly, dispensing with external spawning entirely. This internal-fertilisation system is the foundation of the live-bearing habit that gives the family its name.

The mating biology of P. lucida carries an extra and unusual dimension. The species is the sexual host for the all-female unisexual lineages Poeciliopsis monacha-lucida and Poeciliopsis 2 monacha-lucida — clonal "hybridogen" lineages that arose from past hybridisation and that cannot reproduce on their own. These unisexuals are sperm-dependent: their eggs will not develop unless inseminated by males of a sexual host species, and P. lucida males provide that trigger. The sperm is used to activate development but its paternal genome is largely discarded in the next generation, a system worked out in detail by R. J. Schultz and colleagues and now a textbook example of clonal reproduction in vertebrates.

This means that, in mixed natural populations, male P. lucida mate not only with their own females but also with the all-female lineages that depend on them — an arrangement central to why the monacha-lucida complex has been studied so intensively.

Breeding

Poeciliopsis lucida is viviparous: fertilised eggs are retained and the female gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. The species sits within the reproductive-ecology framework laid out by Thibault and Schultz (1978), whose classic study of the monacha-lucida complex placed P. lucida among the matrotrophic livebearers — that is, the female supplies nutrients to the developing embryos after fertilisation (placentotrophy), rather than relying solely on egg yolk. In the genus's spectrum, P. lucida shows an intermediate degree of this post-fertilisation provisioning, in contrast to the essentially yolk-provisioned (lecithotrophic) P. monacha.

The species also exhibits superfetation, the capacity to carry several broods at different developmental stages simultaneously, so that a female can have successive litters maturing in overlapping sequence. Brood size increases with female body size, though, as Thibault and Schultz noted, less steeply than in some other livebearers such as Poecilia reticulata or P. monacha. Later work (Functional Ecology, 2008) confirmed these superfetation and brood-size patterns and found that the unisexual hybrids did not differ significantly from their sexual parental species in the extent of superfetation or in average brood size.

These traits — viviparity, matrotrophy and superfetation together — are precisely what make P. lucida and its complex a model system for the evolution of maternal provisioning in fishes. The species has also been used as a laboratory model in cancer and melanoma genetics within Poeciliopsis.

In the aquarium

Poeciliopsis lucida is not a fish of the general aquarium trade. It is kept chiefly by specialist livebearer hobbyists and in research colonies rather than as a commercial ornamental, reflecting its plain appearance and its scientific rather than decorative value.

Where it is maintained, it would be managed as a typical small, warm-water poeciliid: a planted aquarium with stable, warm conditions, gentle filtration, and a diet of small flake and live or frozen invertebrates. As with other livebearers, providing dense planting or floating cover helps newborn fry survive, since adults will take small young.

Because the species' range is so restricted and its husbandry not widely documented in the cached sources, specific aquarium parameters are kept general here. Aquarists interested in the species should treat it as a conservation- and research-grade fish — worth keeping carefully and breeding responsibly within specialist networks rather than mixing casually into community tanks.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Poeciliopsis lucida as Data Deficient (species ID 191762), meaning there is not yet enough information on its distribution, population and threats to assign a category of extinction risk. The assessment was dated 23 March 2018. A Data Deficient listing is not a statement that the species is safe — it is a statement that its status is genuinely uncertain.

For a fish endemic to just two Pacific-slope basins in Sinaloa, that uncertainty matters. Narrow-range freshwater fishes are inherently sensitive to local pressures such as water extraction, agricultural runoff, habitat alteration and introduced species, and the limited monitoring that produces a Data Deficient rating is itself a gap worth closing.

The responsible position is therefore caution: the species should not be assumed secure simply because no threat has been formally documented, and its scientific importance as the sexual host of the monacha-lucida unisexual complex adds weight to keeping both the fish and its habitat well studied and protected.
