Poeciliopsis presidionis is a small, little-known livebearer of the Pacific slope of north-western Mexico, where it occupies the warm lowland streams running from the Río Sinaloa south toward San Blas in Nayarit. Like its relatives among the New World toothcarps it gives birth to live young rather than laying eggs, the males equipped with the rod-like gonopodium that is the signature of the family. It is a Mexican endemic of restricted range, currently assessed as Data Deficient by the IUCN, and it belongs to a genus that is otherwise famous in biology as the home of some of the most unusual reproductive systems known in vertebrates.

Taxonomy & naming

Poeciliopsis presidionis was described as Poeciliopsis presidionis by David Starr Jordan and Gilbert Culver in 1895, from material collected on the Pacific slope of north-western Mexico. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid fish names, treats the species within the genus Poeciliopsis in the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers; FishBase places it in the subfamily Poeciliinae of the order Cyprinodontiformes. The original combination has carried the species through the literature largely unchanged, and it remains a stable, well-circumscribed member of its genus.

The genus name Poeciliopsis is built from the Greek poikilos, "with many colours," and opsis, "appearance" — a reference to the variegated, mottled patterning typical of these toothcarps and an echo of the closely related genus Poecilia. The specific epithet presidionis derives from a place name in the species' native region, in the manner common to late-nineteenth-century descriptions that tied a fish to the locality where it was first taken. Its Spanish common name, guatopote de Sinaloa, and its English name, Sinaloa livebearer, both fix the species to the Mexican state at the heart of its range.

Poeciliopsis is one of the more biologically remarkable genera of livebearers. While many of its species are conventional bisexual fishes, the genus is the textbook home of unisexual, all-female hybrid lineages — the Poeciliopsis monacha-lucida complex and its relatives — that reproduce clonally or hemiclonally, and it spans an unusual diversity of maternal provisioning strategies. Poeciliopsis presidionis itself is a normal bisexual species; the genus context simply underlines how varied the reproductive biology of these small Mexican fishes can be.

Morphology

Poeciliopsis presidionis is a small, slender, surface-oriented livebearer. FishBase, citing Wischnath's Atlas of Livebearers of the World (1993), records males reaching about 1.5 in in total length and females growing larger, to roughly 2 in — the female-larger size difference that is the norm among poeciliids. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, built for the shallow, flowing waters the species inhabits, with the upturned mouth of a fish that takes food at or near the surface.

As in all members of the family, the sexes are readily told apart by the male's gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to deliver sperm to the female. Females lack this structure, retaining a normal fan-shaped anal fin, and are deeper-bodied and plainer than the males. Detailed published descriptions of the species' coloration are sparse; like many guatopotes it is understated rather than gaudy, its patterning more about subtle silvering and mottling than the saturated spotting of an aquarium guppy.

The species shows the low-bulk, high-turnover body plan typical of small poeciliids. FishBase lists Bayesian length–weight parameters of a = 0.00851 and b = 3.15 for the species, consistent with a lightly built fish, and rates it as harmless to humans with low vulnerability to fishing pressure — the unremarkable physical profile of a small forage species rather than a fishery target.

Habitat

Poeciliopsis presidionis is endemic to the Pacific slope of north-western Mexico. Its range runs along the coastal drainages from the Río Sinaloa in the state of Sinaloa south to the vicinity of San Blas in Nayarit, a relatively narrow band of lowland river systems draining the Sierra Madre Occidental toward the Gulf of California and the open Pacific. This makes it a regional endemic with a restricted distribution, the kind of range that leaves a species vulnerable to localised change even where it is locally common.

FishBase characterises the species as a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of subtropical climates — at home in the warm, often seasonally variable streams and rivers of the region. These Pacific-slope waters are typically lowland systems subject to a pronounced wet–dry cycle, with flows swelling in the summer rains and contracting into pools in the dry months, and the species' surface-oriented build suits the shallow, vegetated margins and slower reaches such habitats provide.

Precise physico-chemical data for the species' waters are not tabulated on the standard references, so any account of its preferred temperature and chemistry rests on the general character of subtropical north-west Mexican streams rather than species-specific measurements. Those waters tend to be warm and often moderately mineralised, but in the absence of cited figures for Poeciliopsis presidionis itself, the specifics here are best treated as sparse.

Feeding

No species-specific diet study for Poeciliopsis presidionis is recorded in the standard references, so its feeding ecology has to be read from its body plan and the habits of its close relatives. As a small, surface-oriented poeciliid of warm lowland streams, it fits the familiar livebearer pattern: an opportunistic omnivore and micro-predator that grazes algae and biofilm and takes small invertebrates and insect larvae from the surface film and water column.

Fishes of this build commonly feed on a mixture of plant and animal matter — diatoms, filamentous algae, detritus and the small drifting prey that collect at the surface, including mosquito and other dipteran larvae. The exact balance between plant and animal food in any given population would depend on what its particular stretch of stream offers through the seasons, and would be expected to shift as the wet–dry cycle changes the availability of invertebrate prey.

Because no published gut-content analysis specific to this species is available, this account is a genus-level inference rather than a documented feeding profile, and is flagged as such. The safe summary is that Poeciliopsis presidionis is almost certainly a generalist omnivore in the mould of its relatives rather than any kind of dietary specialist.

Mating

Reproduction in Poeciliopsis presidionis is internal, as it is throughout the family Poeciliidae. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, the rod-like organ formed from modified anal-fin rays; fertilisation takes place inside the female, and there is no external spawning of eggs. This internal mode of fertilisation is the defining reproductive feature that unites the guppies, mollies, swordtails and guatopotes, Poeciliopsis among them.

In poeciliids generally the male pursues females and courts or attempts copulation more or less continuously, and females of many species are able to store viable sperm internally, drawing on it to produce a succession of broods from a single mating. Species-specific courtship observations for Poeciliopsis presidionis are not documented in the available sources, so the details of its mating behaviour are inferred from the well-studied biology of related livebearers rather than from direct study of this fish.

The genus Poeciliopsis is notable in this respect because it includes both ordinary bisexual species and the famous all-female unisexual lineages that reproduce without genetic contribution from males, as well as varied degrees of maternal provisioning. Some Poeciliopsis species also show superfetation, the capacity to carry several broods at different stages of development simultaneously, but this is not documented for Poeciliopsis presidionis and should not be assumed for it. The species is best understood as a conventional bisexual livebearer with internal fertilisation.

Breeding

As a member of the Poeciliidae, Poeciliopsis presidionis is viviparous: the female carries the developing embryos internally and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than depositing eggs. Within the genus the typical provisioning mode is lecithotrophy, in which the embryos are nourished by yolk laid down in the egg before fertilisation rather than by a placenta-like maternal supply; in the absence of a species-specific study, Poeciliopsis presidionis is best treated as a lecithotrophic livebearer, with the caveat that the genus famously also contains matrotrophic, placental species.

Gestation in small poeciliids generally lasts on the order of a few weeks and is temperature-dependent, with warmer water shortening the interval between broods, and brood sizes scale with the size and condition of the female. FishBase records no species-specific brood-size or gestation figures for Poeciliopsis presidionis, so concrete numbers here would be guesswork; what can be said is that, like its relatives, it produces modest broods of fully formed fry at intervals through the breeding season.

The species' overall life history points to a fast-turnover strategy. FishBase rates its resilience as high, estimating a minimum population doubling time of less than fifteen months — the signature of a small fish that matures quickly and breeds repeatedly. The newborn fry are miniature, independent fish able to swim and feed from birth, and as in other livebearers they need cover from predation, including from larger conspecifics, to survive in numbers.

In the aquarium

Poeciliopsis presidionis is not a fish of the mainstream aquarium trade, and dedicated husbandry guidance for it is sparse: no species-specific care or biotope profile was located in the specialist livebearer literature, and what follows is drawn from the norms of small Pacific-Mexico livebearers rather than verified for this species. As a small, hardy, surface-oriented guatopote it would be expected to suit the kind of setup that works for other warm-water livebearers — a planted aquarium with open swimming space at the surface, gentle to moderate flow, and clean, stable water.

Given its subtropical lowland origins, warm, moderately hard water in the broad range that suits most Mexican livebearers is the sensible starting point, with stability and cleanliness mattering more than precise numbers. The species' continuous-breeding, surface-feeding habits mean a varied omnivore diet — quality small dry foods supplemented with live and frozen items such as Daphnia and brine shrimp, and a share of algal matter — would keep it in condition. As with other prolific livebearers, population control rather than getting them to breed tends to be the real management task.

This is a fish more likely to be kept by livebearer specialists and biotope enthusiasts than by general hobbyists, and the care notes above should be read as reasonable genus-level inference rather than documented species husbandry. Anyone keeping it seriously would do well to record their own water parameters, brood data and behaviour, since the species is genuinely under-documented and first-hand aquarium observations would add real value.

Conservation

Poeciliopsis presidionis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 23 March 2018. The Data Deficient category does not mean the species is secure; it means that the information available on its population size, trend and the threats it faces is insufficient to place it in a specific threat category. For a narrowly distributed Mexican endemic, that uncertainty is itself a reason for attention rather than complacency.

The species' range — the Pacific-slope drainages from the Río Sinaloa to San Blas in Nayarit — lies in a region where freshwater habitats are exposed to the familiar pressures on north-west Mexican rivers: water extraction and flow alteration, agricultural and urban development, pollution, and the introduction of non-native fishes. A restricted-range endemic of lowland streams is, in principle, sensitive to such changes, but without the population and threat data the Data Deficient listing flags as missing, the actual conservation status of Poeciliopsis presidionis cannot be stated with confidence.

The practical conclusion is that this is a species in need of basic field study rather than one that can be confidently called either safe or threatened. Targeted survey work on its distribution, abundance and the condition of its habitats would be the necessary first step toward a more informative assessment, and in the meantime the responsible stance is to treat a little-known regional endemic as potentially vulnerable until the data say otherwise.
