Taxonomy & naming
Pseudoxiphophorus diremptus was first described by the American ichthyologist Donn Eric Rosen in 1979, in his major revision of the live-bearing fishes published in the Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History. Rosen originally placed the fish in the genus Heterandria, as Heterandria dirempta, the combination under which it appeared in the older literature. It is now treated in the genus Pseudoxiphophorus, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — carries it as Pseudoxiphophorus diremptus (Rosen, 1979), with Heterandria dirempta listed as its objective synonym.
The genus Pseudoxiphophorus belongs to the family Poeciliidae, the New World live-bearers, alongside the guppies, mollies, swordtails and mosquitofishes. For much of the twentieth century its species were folded into Heterandria, but molecular and morphological work — including the phylogenetic study of Agorreta and colleagues in 2013 — supported recognising Pseudoxiphophorus as a distinct Mesoamerican genus separate from the North American Heterandria. The best-studied member of the genus is the widespread twospot livebearer, Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus; P. diremptus is one of its far more localised and poorly documented relatives.
The species is genuinely cryptic in the field. The IUCN assessment notes that it is easily confused with, and commonly misidentified as, other small poeciliids of the upper Usumacinta drainage, so its true distribution may be somewhat wider than the records suggest — but confirming that would require careful collection and identification that has simply not been done.
Morphology
Pseudoxiphophorus diremptus is a small fish. The maximum recorded size is about 2.5 in total length for males and unsexed specimens, with females reaching roughly 3 in — figures that come from the taxonomic literature rather than from any large series of measured aquarium fish. In overall form it is a typical small poeciliid: a compact, benthopelagic body built for life in shallow, flowing streams.
As in all live-bearing poeciliids, the sexes differ in the structure of the anal fin. Males carry a gonopodium — an intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays and used to transfer sperm to the female — while females retain a normal fan-shaped anal fin and grow to a slightly larger size than the males. Beyond this, detailed published colour and meristic descriptions for the species are sparse, and there is no photograph of a confirmed living specimen on FishBase, so a precise account of its markings is best left to the original description rather than guessed at here.
Much of the diagnostic detail that separates P. diremptus from its congeners lies in fine features of the gonopodium and the bony anatomy, the characters Rosen used to delimit the species in 1979. These are not the kind of field marks a casual observer would notice, which is part of why the fish is so readily confused with other small toothcarps of the region.
Habitat
The species is a Guatemalan endemic restricted to the Chajmaic River and its tributaries, an intermontane basin of only around 22 square kilometres in the department of Alta Verapaz. The basin is connected to the neighbouring Sebol River by a subterranean passage, and the whole drainage sits within the upper reaches of the great Usumacinta system. The type locality is a small tributary of the Chajmaic River, about 9 mi south of Sebol along interstate highway 5.
Within this small range the fish lives in classic small-stream habitat. Rosen's original collections and the later field records describe it from small tributary streams, small rivers and woodland pools — permanent freshwater wetlands of the inland kind, fed by the wet highlands of Alta Verapaz. The IUCN treats the entire known range as a single location, with the extent of occurrence and area of occupancy estimated at no more than a few tens of square kilometres.
This pinpoint distribution is the central fact of the species' biology. A fish confined to one small basin is exposed to whatever happens in that basin, and the assessors flag exactly that concern: sand mining and quarrying, and the abstraction of surface water for agriculture, are identified as future threats to the limited habitat. The species occurs in no protected area, and Guatemala lists it as a category-three species on its national List of Threatened Species.
Feeding
No diet study specific to Pseudoxiphophorus diremptus has been published, so its feeding ecology has to be inferred from its body plan, its habitat and its better-known relatives. FishBase places it at a trophic level of roughly 3.0, a value modelled from its size and from related species rather than measured from gut contents — consistent with a small omnivore that takes both animal and plant material.
Small stream-dwelling poeciliids of this kind are typically opportunistic micro-predators and grazers, feeding on aquatic insect larvae and other small invertebrates, on algae and biofilm scraped from surfaces, and on drifting organic matter. In the shallow tributaries and woodland pools it inhabits, a diet of small invertebrates supplemented by algal and detrital material is the most reasonable expectation, but it should be read as a general pattern for the genus and habitat, not a measured fact for this species.
Because the fish is not kept in the hobby, there is likewise no body of aquarium feeding experience to draw on. The data here are sparse, and the honest summary is that P. diremptus is presumed to be a generalist omnivore in the mould of its relatives.
Mating
Pseudoxiphophorus diremptus is a viviparous live-bearer with internal fertilisation, the reproductive mode shared by all poeciliids. Sperm transfer is accomplished by the male's gonopodium, the rod-like organ built from modified anal-fin rays; the male manoeuvres it forward and to the side to deliver sperm into the female's genital opening. This internal fertilisation is what allows poeciliids to dispense with spawning sites entirely and instead carry their developing young.
The specific courtship behaviour of this species has not been documented. In the genus Pseudoxiphophorus and in small poeciliids generally, males pursue females actively and may both perform brief displays and attempt rapid, unsolicited copulations using the gonopodium. Females are frequently able to store viable sperm internally between matings, which in many poeciliids lets a single insemination fuel more than one brood — though whether and to what degree P. diremptus does this has not been specifically reported.
Unlike a few specialised poeciliids such as Heterandria formosa and some Poeciliopsis, the genus Pseudoxiphophorus is not noted for superfetation — the carrying of several broods at different developmental stages at once — nor for the placenta-like matrotrophic provisioning seen in those lineages. The young of this group are understood to be lecithotrophic, nourished by yolk laid down in the egg before fertilisation.
Breeding
As a live-bearer, P. diremptus gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. No gestation period or brood size has been measured for the species itself; the figures that exist are for the well-studied congener Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus, in which gestation runs roughly six to eight weeks depending on the female's age and size, with broods of perhaps twenty to a hundred young. Those numbers are a reasonable genus-level guide but must not be read as measured values for P. diremptus.
The embryos of Pseudoxiphophorus develop on yolk reserves provided in the egg — lecithotrophic development, without the matrotrophic placenta-like provisioning found in some other poeciliid lineages, and without notable superfetation. The newborn fry emerge as fully formed miniatures, able to swim and feed straight away, as is the rule across the family.
That the fish persists in its tiny basin tells us it breeds successfully there. Beyond that, the breeding biology of this particular species is essentially undocumented: it has not been bred in captivity in any recorded programme, and its reproductive output in the wild has not been quantified. This is one of the clearest places where the data are simply sparse.
In the aquarium
Pseudoxiphophorus diremptus is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. It is a range-restricted Guatemalan endemic that has never become established in the hobby, and there is no dedicated care profile for it from the American Livebearer Association or any comparable group. Anything written about keeping it would be extrapolation from its relatives rather than reported experience, so the honest position is that husbandry information for this species does not exist.
If the fish were ever maintained — most plausibly within a conservation or research collection rather than the general hobby — it would presumably want the conditions of its native streams: warm, well-oxygenated, clean freshwater with steady, gentle flow, in the temperature range typical of tropical highland tributaries. Its congeners in the genus are generally regarded as hardy and undemanding provided water quality is kept high, which is the most that can responsibly be said by analogy.
Given its conservation status and pinpoint range, the more relevant point for an aquarist is restraint: this is a vulnerable single-basin endemic, not a trade fish, and any interest in it belongs in the realm of careful, permitted, conservation-minded work rather than casual fishkeeping.
Conservation
Pseudoxiphophorus diremptus is assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List under criterion D2, an assessment carried out on 14 October 2019 and published in 2020 by Elias and Lyons. The D2 listing reflects not a documented decline but the extreme narrowness of the species' range: it is known from a single location in the Chajmaic basin of Alta Verapaz, with an extent of occurrence and area of occupancy of only a few tens of square kilometres, leaving it vulnerable to being driven to a critical state or to extinction by a single adverse event.
The population trend is recorded as unknown. The species is documented from the 298 paratypes of Rosen's 1979 description, from 25 individuals collected in 2010 by Morales-Cazan and Albert, and from further collections in 2018 — a thin but continuous thread of records confirming it persists. The principal future threats identified by the assessors are habitat-based: sand mining and quarrying within the small basin, and the abstraction of surface water for agriculture. The fish is not used in trade, which removes one common pressure on small endemics.
It occurs in no protected area, and within Guatemala it is included as a category-three species on the national List of Threatened Species under CONAP. Because the fish is so easily confused with other small poeciliids of the upper Usumacinta drainage, the assessment notes it may prove more widely distributed than current records show — but until that is verified by careful collection, conservation planning must treat it as the single-basin endemic it appears to be.
