The twospot livebearer is a robust, predatory Central American poeciliid that long hid in the aquarium literature under the name Heterandria bimaculata. Native to the Atlantic-slope drainages from central Veracruz, Mexico, south to Nicaragua, Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus is a tolerant habitat generalist whose females grow far larger than the slender, gonopodium-bearing males — a size gap unusual even among livebearers. Hardy, fecund and adaptable, it is at home in lowland streams, springs, lakes and montane brooks above a thousand metres, and the same qualities that make it a survivor have also turned it into an invader where it has been moved beyond its native range.

Taxonomy & naming

Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus was described by the Austrian naturalist Johann Jakob Heckel in 1848, originally as Xiphophorus bimaculatus, from Central American material. The species has carried a long train of synonyms across its history: Poeciliodes bimaculatus Steindachner 1863, Pseudoxiphophorus reticulatus Troschel 1865, and Pseudoxiphophorus pauciradiatus Regan 1904 among them. For much of the twentieth century the fish was placed in the genus Heterandria, and the combination Heterandria bimaculata is the name under which it still appears in most older hobby care guides. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — places the species in Pseudoxiphophorus, the genus erected for this lineage, within the family Poeciliidae and the subfamily Poeciliinae.

The genus Pseudoxiphophorus belongs to the New World livebearers, the same family that contains the guppies, mollies, platies and swordtails. The genus name translates roughly as "false Xiphophorus," reflecting an early superficial resemblance to the swordtails and platies; the species epithet bimaculatus, "two-spotted," refers to the dark markings that give the fish its English name, the twospot livebearer. Where wild-caught fish enter the aquarium trade — which happens only occasionally — they are still frequently sold under the old Heterandria label, a point of confusion worth keeping in mind when tracing husbandry information.

Morphology

Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus is a comparatively large poeciliid with strongly pronounced sexual size dimorphism. Males are small and elongate, reaching about 3 in in total length, while females are far larger and deeper-bodied, growing to roughly 6 in — a striking gap that sets the species apart from most of the smaller, more familiar livebearers. The body is elongated overall, with a silvery to olive ground colour and dark markings on the flank and at the caudal-peduncle base that give the fish its common name. FishBase records a length-weight relationship of a = 0.00490, b = 3.09, consistent with the fish's robust, slightly stocky build.

As in all poeciliids, the defining male feature is the gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to transfer sperm to the female internally. Males are slimmer and more streamlined than the much rounder, heavier females, and the difference in size is itself the clearest sexing character: a mature female may be twice the length of a courting male. The species reaches sexual maturity at a small size, around 1 in, well before the fish approaches its adult dimensions, so functioning males and gravid females can both be far smaller than the maximum lengths the species ultimately attains.

Habitat

The twospot livebearer is native to the Atlantic-slope drainages of Central America, ranging from the Misantla River in central Veracruz, Mexico, south through Belize, Guatemala and Honduras to the Prinzapolka River in Nicaragua. Within Mexico its native range spans Veracruz, Tabasco, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Campeche, Quintana Roo and the Yucatán, and it is widespread through the large Grijalva–Usumacinta drainage. The species is a pronounced habitat generalist, occupying both lotic and lentic systems: flowing streams and rivers, springs, lakes, seasonal wetlands, and montane springs and streams above 1,000 metres elevation. It prefers fresh water but tolerates salinity up to about 7 parts per thousand, a flexibility that broadens the range of waters it can colonise.

FishBase characterises the species as a tropical freshwater, benthopelagic fish living in water of roughly 68–82 °F, with a pH around neutral or slightly above and a moderate hardness of about 10 to 15 dH. In the wild it favours slower stretches — slow streams, ponds and small rivers — often with dense vegetation and sandy or muddy substrate. This tolerance of varied conditions, combined with live-bearing reproduction, explains both the fish's natural success across a wide elevational and chemical gradient and its capacity to establish itself where it has been introduced. Within Mexico it has been translocated beyond its native basins into Michoacán, Jalisco and Guerrero, where it is regarded as an invasive.

Feeding

Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus is an omnivore with a generalist, somewhat predatory diet; FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.0, higher than the more strictly herbivorous or micro-grazing livebearers, reflecting a substantial intake of animal prey. In the wild it takes aquatic invertebrates, insects and insect larvae, smaller fishes and fry, together with algae, detritus and plant material, shifting its diet with whatever the local habitat offers. Its size and appetite make it a meaningful small predator in the waters it occupies.

In the aquarium the species is undemanding and not a picky eater. It readily accepts good-quality flake and pellet foods and relishes live and frozen items such as brine shrimp, bloodworm and Daphnia, which support condition and breeding. Given the fish's predatory leanings and large adult size, a varied diet weighted toward protein suits it well, and keepers should be aware that adults will treat very small tankmates and their own fry as food. A share of vegetable matter rounds out the diet.

Mating

Like all poeciliids, the twospot livebearer reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, the modified anal fin that is the defining reproductive structure of the New World livebearers; there is no external spawning and no nest. Males pursue and court females, and as in related livebearers, females are able to store viable sperm internally, allowing successive broods to be produced from a single mating without the continual presence of a male.

Reproduction in this species is viviparous and, in the manner typical of the genus, primarily lecithotrophic — the developing young are nourished chiefly by yolk laid down in the egg rather than by a placenta-like maternal supply, and superfetation (carrying several broods at different developmental stages simultaneously) is not documented here and should not be assumed. The fish matures early, reaching first reproduction before the end of its first year, so even relatively young, small individuals breed. The detailed reproductive life history has been studied along an elevational gradient in the Honduran highlands by Olinger and colleagues (2016), who documented variation in reproductive traits such as brood size and offspring size with elevation — evidence that the species adjusts its reproductive output to local conditions across its broad altitudinal range.

Breeding

After internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos through a gestation that FishBase gives as roughly six to eight weeks, varying with the female's age and size, after which she gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. Brood sizes are large for a livebearer: FishBase reports broods of about 20 to 100 young, with the bigger broods produced by the largest females — a natural consequence of the species' exceptional female size. Hobby observations under the Heterandria bimaculata name report a somewhat shorter gestation of around four weeks, so figures in the literature vary and likely reflect differences in temperature and population.

The newborn fry are fully formed, able to swim and feed immediately. As with most livebearers, the adults — including the mother — readily eat fry, and given this species' predatory disposition the risk is acute, so breeders provide dense planting or floating cover and may remove the female after she gives birth. Fry grow on crushed flake, infusoria and microworms, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp as they develop. The combination of large broods, early maturity and the species' high reproductive resilience — FishBase rates population doubling at under 15 months — means a breeding group multiplies quickly under good conditions.

In the aquarium

The twospot livebearer is a hardy, adaptable aquarium fish, but its large female size and predatory leanings make it a poorer fit for a mixed community of small fishes than the diminutive guppies and platies. It is generally peaceful toward its own kind and toward fish too large to be eaten, occupying the middle levels of the tank, but it will take small tankmates and fry, so companions should be chosen with its appetite and adult dimensions in mind. Hobby sources recommend a tank of at least about 35.5 in in length, reflecting the room a group of these comparatively large livebearers needs; captive lifespans of five to eight years are reported.

Water chemistry should track the species' wild preferences: temperatures of roughly 72–82 °F, a pH around neutral (about 6.5 to 7.0 in hobby practice), and moderate hardness of around 10 to 15 dGH. The fish appreciates dense vegetation and a sandy or muddy substrate echoing its natural slow-water habitats. One practical caution applies: the species is an able jumper, so a tight-fitting lid is essential. As an undemanding eater that breeds freely, it is straightforward to maintain for a keeper who can accommodate its size and manage its prolific reproduction.

Conservation

Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessed 28 August 2018; published 2019, assessment e.T191736A2001438), with a stable population trend. The species is widespread and abundant across its native Central American range, occupies a broad array of habitats from lowland streams to montane springs, tolerates a range of water conditions including moderate salinity, and reproduces prolifically — none of which place it under threat at the species level. It occurs within protected areas including the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve in Quintana Roo, Mexico, and Cusuco National Park in Honduras.

The threats noted in the assessment are local and minor: agricultural and industrial pollution in parts of its range, and parasitism associated with introduced species — notably Gyrodactylus infections linked to the spread of the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). As with several hardy livebearers, the more significant conservation story runs in the other direction: within Mexico the species has been translocated beyond its native basins into Michoacán, Jalisco and Guerrero, where it is regarded as an invasive that can affect local fish communities. The responsible position for an aquarist therefore mirrors that for other adaptable livebearers — unwanted fish should never be released into local waters, where this resilient species can establish itself readily.
