Pseudoxiphophorus jonesii is a robust, hardy livebearer of the Atlantic-slope streams of eastern Mexico, ranging from southern Tamaulipas south into Puebla. Despite the misleading common name "barred killifish," it is not a killifish at all but a true poeciliid — a relative of the guppies, mollies and mosquitofishes — that gives birth to live young. It is an adaptable, somewhat predatory fish of moving and standing waters, and one of the better-known members of a genus formerly bundled into the broad concept of Heterandria.

Taxonomy & naming

Pseudoxiphophorus jonesii was described by the British-German ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1874, from Mexican material. The species has a tangled nomenclatural history typical of the Central American poeciliids: it has at various times been placed in or associated with the broadly defined genus Heterandria and the wider Gambusia group of mosquitofish relatives. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, treats the species as Pseudoxiphophorus jonesii (Günther, 1874), placing it in the genus Pseudoxiphophorus within the family Poeciliidae and subfamily Poeciliinae.

The genus Pseudoxiphophorus was resurrected from synonymy with Heterandria as molecular and morphological work clarified that the larger-bodied Central American "Heterandria" were not closely allied to the diminutive least killifish, Heterandria formosa, of the southeastern United States. The fishes now in Pseudoxiphophorus are the robust, predatory livebearers of Mexico and northern Central America. The species epithet honours Thomas Manson Rymer Jones (1839–1894), who is credited with discovering the fish in Mexico and presenting specimens to the British Museum. The English name "barred killifish" is a hobby and trade label and is taxonomically misleading, as the species is a poeciliid livebearer, not a killifish (Cyprinodontiformes: Cyprinodontoidei).

Morphology

Pseudoxiphophorus jonesii is a stocky, moderately large livebearer. FishBase records a maximum total length of about 3.5 in for males or unsexed specimens, with females reaching roughly 2.5 in TL. This size relationship is itself notable: in this species males attain a larger maximum length than females, which is unusual among poeciliids, where the female is typically the larger sex. The body is robust and somewhat deep, built for a fish that holds its own in flowing water.

As in all poeciliids, the most diagnostic external feature is found in the male: the anal fin is modified into a gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ formed from elongated and specialised fin rays and used to transfer sperm to the female. Females retain a normal, fan-shaped anal fin and a deeper abdomen, especially when gravid. The common name refers to dark barring or markings along the flanks. Beyond these broad points the species is a plainly coloured, functionally built fish rather than a brightly ornamented one, and fine pigment and pattern details vary between populations across its range; precise colour descriptions are data-sparse in the sources consulted here.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Atlantic (Gulf of Mexico) slope of eastern Mexico, where it ranges from the Río Guayalejo in southern Tamaulipas south to the Río Tehuacán in Puebla. This places it within the freshwater drainages of the Pánuco and neighbouring Gulf-slope systems. It is a freshwater, benthopelagic, tropical fish; FishBase records a temperature range of roughly 68–82 °F for the species.

Pseudoxiphophorus jonesii is ecologically flexible. Adults inhabit both slow- and fast-flowing streams and rivers as well as standing waters, a breadth of tolerance that is characteristic of the hardy Central American livebearers and helps explain the species' wide distribution along the Gulf slope. Its migratory behaviour is undetermined. Note that FishBase's pH and hardness fields for this species are clearly garbled (listing impossible pH values), and so a reliable water-chemistry envelope beyond the temperature range is not available from the sources at hand; the fish should be treated as a generally adaptable inhabitant of warm, tropical fresh waters.

Feeding

Pseudoxiphophorus jonesii is an omnivore with a carnivorous lean. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 2.9 (estimated from relatives), consistent with a small fish that takes a substantial share of animal prey alongside plant and detrital matter. In the wild this would include small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae and other small drifting or benthic items, supplemented by algae and detritus.

In the aquarium the genus is known for being undemanding and readily accepting prepared foods, though members of Pseudoxiphophorus are more predatory than the typical community livebearer and will take small live and frozen foods enthusiastically. A varied diet combining good-quality flake or micro-pellets with live or frozen invertebrates suits the species. Specific dietary studies for P. jonesii are sparse; the picture above is drawn from the FishBase trophic estimate and general knowledge of the genus rather than detailed gut-content work on this species.

Mating

Like all poeciliids, Pseudoxiphophorus jonesii practises internal fertilisation. The male uses the gonopodium — the modified anal fin — to transfer sperm directly to the female, rather than fertilising eggs externally as egg-scattering fishes do. There is no nest, no spawning site and no external egg deposition; reproduction is a matter of the male locating and inseminating receptive females.

Male poeciliids commonly combine display-based courtship with persistent pursuit, and the larger male size in this particular species may play a role in male–male competition and access to females. As in many livebearers, females are able to store viable sperm internally for some time after mating, allowing successive broods to be produced from a single insemination. Species-specific courtship behaviour for P. jonesii was not documented in the sources consulted, so the account here reflects the shared reproductive biology of the family rather than observations unique to this fish.

Breeding

Pseudoxiphophorus jonesii is viviparous — a true livebearer that gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. Members of the genus are lecithotrophic, meaning the developing embryos are nourished by yolk rather than by a placental connection to the mother, in contrast to the matrotrophic, superfetating livebearers such as Heterandria formosa and many Poeciliopsis. Superfetation — carrying several broods at different developmental stages simultaneously — is not a notable feature of Pseudoxiphophorus.

FishBase gives no specific brood-size or gestation values for P. jonesii, and no reliable captive-breeding figures surfaced in research; these reproductive specifics should be regarded as data-sparse for this species. In general terms, Pseudoxiphophorus are hardy and prolific livebearers, and the female carries the developing young to term and releases fully formed, immediately independent fry. As with most poeciliids, the adults — including the mother — will readily eat their own fry, so dense cover or separation is needed to raise broods in captivity.

In the aquarium

Pseudoxiphophorus jonesii is a hardy, undemanding aquarium fish that tolerates a broad range of conditions, in keeping with its adaptable wild ecology and the 68–82 °F range recorded for the species. It is not a delicate fish, and its robustness makes it forgiving of ordinary husbandry. A spacious, well-filtered aquarium with some current suits a fish that lives in both flowing and still waters in the wild.

The important caveat is temperament. Unlike the peaceable guppies and platies, Pseudoxiphophorus are comparatively predatory and prone to fin-nipping, and larger individuals will prey on smaller tankmates and on fry — including their own. They are therefore poor choices for a delicate community tank and are better kept either in a species setup or with robust tankmates of similar size and disposition. Given the larger maximum size of the males and the genus's boisterous nature, the aquarist should plan for a fish with attitude rather than a gentle ornamental livebearer.

Conservation

Pseudoxiphophorus jonesii is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessed 27 August 2018). Its wide distribution along the Atlantic slope of eastern Mexico, spanning multiple drainages from Tamaulipas to Puebla, together with its tolerance of varied habitats from fast streams to standing waters, supports this classification; it is not a narrowly endemic or threatened poeciliid.

FishBase characterises the species as having medium resilience, with an estimated population doubling time of 1.4 to 4.4 years, and a low vulnerability to fishing — figures consistent with a small, fast-reproducing, adaptable livebearer. The detailed IUCN assessment narrative on population trend, specific habitat threats and conservation measures was not retrieved in this research pass, so beyond the Least Concern listing the species' conservation status is reported here only in broad terms.
