Taxonomy & naming
Pseudoxiphophorus litoperas was originally described by Donn Eric Rosen and Reeve Maclaren Bailey in 1979 as Heterandria litoperas. The species was subsequently transferred to the genus Pseudoxiphophorus, which is why the describing authority is written in parentheses — the modern combination differs from the genus of the original description. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the governing authority for valid fish names, carries the species under genus identifier 2549 and species identifier 9314, and FishBase lists it under species code 46718.
The genus Pseudoxiphophorus belongs to the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers, within the order Cyprinodontiformes. The genus name translates roughly as "false Xiphophorus" — a false swordtail — reflecting a superficial resemblance to the true swordtails and platies of the genus Xiphophorus. Several species formerly scattered through Heterandria and related genera have been gathered into Pseudoxiphophorus as the systematics of the Central American livebearers has been revised. P. litoperas is one of the less frequently discussed members of the genus, and much of what can be said about it rests on its placement within this well-understood family rather than on species-specific study.
The Guatemalan biodiversity portal records the original combination Heterandria litoperas Rosen & Bailey, 1979 as a synonym and lists the species as part of the country's native freshwater fish fauna.
