Xiphophorus evelynae is a small, little-known platyfish confined to the cool, fast highland waters of the Necaxa and Tecolutla river system in the state of Puebla, central Mexico. Described in 1960 and named for Evelyn Gordon — who helped collect the first specimens on a 1939 expedition with her husband, the pioneering Xiphophorus geneticist Myron Gordon — it is one of the platy-group swordtails: a finless-sword livebearer whose modest size and restricted, single-drainage range have kept it on the margins of both the aquarium hobby and conservation attention. The IUCN lists it as Data Deficient, and reliable species-specific husbandry information remains genuinely sparse.

Taxonomy & naming

Xiphophorus evelynae was described by the American ichthyologist Donn Eric Rosen in 1960, in his revision of the swordtails and platyfishes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Xiphophorus evelynae Rosen, 1960 as the valid name, placing the species in the genus Xiphophorus within the family Poeciliidae and the order Cyprinodontiformes. Although the common English names "platyfish" and "platy" historically distinguished the deep-bodied, finless members of the genus from the sword-bearing swordtails, modern phylogenetic work — including the analysis of the tribe Poeciliini by Rodríguez (1997) — has shown that the platies and swordtails do not form separate natural groups but are interwoven within a single genus, and "platy" is best read as a body-form label rather than a formal subgenus.

The genus name Xiphophorus comes from the Greek xiphos, a sword, and pherein, to carry — "sword-bearer" — in reference to the elongated lower caudal-fin ray of the true swordtails; in the platy-type species such as X. evelynae that sword is absent or reduced. The species epithet evelynae is an eponym honouring Evelyn Gordon, who assisted in collecting the first known specimens during a 1939 Mexican field trip alongside her husband, Dr Myron Gordon, whose laboratory work on Xiphophorus pigmentation and hybridisation made the genus a foundational model in fish genetics and cancer research. The Spanish vernacular name Espada del Necaxa ties the fish to its home drainage, the Necaxa, while "Puebla platyfish" and "reticulate platyfish" are the names most often seen in English-language references.

Morphology

Xiphophorus evelynae is a small poeciliid with the compact, somewhat deep-bodied build characteristic of the platy-type members of the genus rather than the elongate, sword-tailed swordtails. FishBase gives a maximum length of about 1.5 in total length for males and unsexed fish, with females reaching roughly 2.5 in TL — the larger female size being the usual pattern in livebearers, where the body must accommodate developing broods. As in other platy-form Xiphophorus, the caudal fin is rounded and lacks the extended lower-lobe "sword" that defines the true swordtails.

Sexual dimorphism follows the standard poeciliid template. Males are smaller and more slender and carry a gonopodium — the intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin — while females are larger, deeper-bodied, and develop a darkened gravid region at the rear of the abdomen when carrying young. Detailed, published descriptions of the live colour pattern of wild X. evelynae are limited in the accessible literature; the "reticulate" common name points to a net-like or mottled flank patterning, but precise, source-verifiable colour detail is sparse, and this profile deliberately avoids asserting specifics that cannot be traced to a reliable reference.

Habitat

Xiphophorus evelynae is endemic to the Tecolutla River basin of central Mexico, and specifically to the Necaxa River system on the Atlantic slope of the Mexican highlands within the state of Puebla. FishBase classifies it as a freshwater, benthopelagic, non-migratory species of tropical highland waters, recording a temperature range of roughly 72–81 °F. This is a narrowly distributed fish tied to a single river system rather than a wide-ranging generalist, which is part of why its conservation status is hard to assess.

The Necaxa drainage sits in the rugged, forested uplands of the Sierra Norte de Puebla, a region of clear, cool, often fast-flowing streams and rivers feeding the Atlantic-slope Tecolutla system. Like many highland Mexican poeciliids, X. evelynae would be expected in vegetated stream margins, pools, and slower reaches where livebearers can shelter and feed. The same upland setting also makes the species potentially vulnerable to localised pressures — the Necaxa basin has a long history of hydroelectric development and water diversion — though species-level threat data are not well documented.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study of Xiphophorus evelynae is available in the accessible literature, and FishBase reports only an estimated trophic level of about 3.1, indicating an omnivore that takes a mixture of plant and small-animal matter. By analogy with its better-studied congeners and with highland poeciliids generally, the species is expected to be an opportunistic omnivore grazing on algae and biofilm (aufwuchs), detritus, diatoms, and small aquatic invertebrates and insect larvae taken from the substrate, vegetation, and water column.

In captivity, platy-type Xiphophorus are undemanding feeders that accept good-quality flake and micro-pellets readily and benefit from a meaningful share of vegetable or algal matter alongside small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and finely chopped bloodworm. As with other small, near-constant grazers, several modest feedings suit them better than a single large meal, and a varied diet supports both colour and breeding condition. Because no species-specific feeding regime for X. evelynae has been published, these notes are drawn from genus-level husbandry rather than from a study of this fish.

Mating

Like all members of the family Poeciliidae, Xiphophorus evelynae reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ built from modified rays of the anal fin — the defining structure of the male livebearer. Rather than building nests or laying eggs, the male pursues and courts females, and in the swordtail–platy group courtship typically combines display with attempts at insemination; the female is the larger, choosier sex.

Female poeciliids can store viable sperm internally for extended periods, so a single mating can fuel several successive broods without further contact with a male — a trait shared across the genus. Detailed accounts of the specific courtship behaviour of X. evelynae are not available in the accessible literature, so this section describes the reproductive biology that the species shares with its better-studied relatives rather than observations unique to it. Notably, the placental, embryo-nourishing reproduction and superfetation (carrying multiple broods at different developmental stages simultaneously) seen in some poeciliids are not features of Xiphophorus, which are lecithotrophic.

Breeding

Xiphophorus evelynae is viviparous, as are all poeciliids: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing young and gives birth to free-swimming, fully formed fry rather than laying eggs. Importantly, Xiphophorus are lecithotrophic — the embryos are nourished by yolk reserves laid down in the egg before fertilisation, not by a placenta-like maternal supply — and the genus does not show the superfetation found in some other livebearer lineages. Gestation in platy-type Xiphophorus generally runs on the order of three to four weeks and varies with temperature.

Species-specific brood-size and breeding data for X. evelynae are genuinely sparse, and rather than guess at numbers this profile defers to the general pattern of the genus: broods of yolk-fed fry delivered roughly monthly when conditions are warm and food is plentiful, with brood size scaling with the size and condition of the female. As in other Xiphophorus, the newborn fry are immediately able to swim and feed and benefit from dense cover, since adults — including the mother — will eat fry given the chance. FishBase notes a high population resilience and a minimum population doubling time of under 15 months, consistent with the steady, repeated live-bearing reproduction typical of the group.

In the aquarium

Xiphophorus evelynae is an aquarium-trade species, but it is uncommon and is kept mainly by livebearer specialists rather than being a fixture of the general hobby; there is no widely circulated, species-specific commercial care guide for it, and most husbandry guidance is extrapolated from the genus. As a small, highland platy-type livebearer it would suit a planted aquarium with cool-to-moderately-warm, clean, well-oxygenated water, in the company of peaceful tankmates of similar size. Keeping it in groups with a female-biased sex ratio reduces the persistent harassment that single females otherwise receive from courting males.

Water conditions should reflect its highland origins: temperatures around 72–81 °F, and — following general Xiphophorus husbandry — neutral to slightly alkaline water of moderate hardness, with an emphasis on stability and cleanliness over precise target numbers. Because this is a narrowly distributed species kept largely within specialist circles, aquarists who work with it have a real role in maintaining genetically healthy captive lines; sourcing fish from established livebearer-society stock and avoiding hybridisation with other Xiphophorus matters both for the fish's quality and for any future conservation value of captive populations.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Xiphophorus evelynae as Data Deficient (DD) — the category used when there is insufficient information to make a direct or indirect assessment of extinction risk. The species is not evaluated under CITES or CMS. A Data Deficient listing is not a statement that the fish is safe; for a narrowly endemic species restricted to a single highland river system, it is closer to a flag that more survey work is needed before its true status can be known.

The practical concern is the species' very limited range. Confined to the Necaxa and broader Tecolutla drainage in Puebla — a basin long subject to hydroelectric development, water diversion, and the general pressures on Mexican highland streams from habitat alteration and introduced species — a single-drainage endemic can be far more vulnerable to localised change than its current Data Deficient label implies. For an aquarium atlas the responsible position is twofold: to present what is reliably documented without inflating sparse data into false certainty, and to recognise that specialist captive maintenance of clean, non-hybridised lines may carry genuine conservation value for a fish whose wild status remains genuinely unresolved.
