Xiphophorus meyeri is a small, spotted platyfish known from a single spring system at Melchor Muzquiz in the arid state of Coahuila, northern Mexico — and from almost nowhere else, because in the wild it is gone. Last recorded in its native springs in 1997, the species was assessed by the IUCN as Extinct in the Wild, surviving only as managed captive stock at the Texas Xiphophorus centre and in coordinated ex-situ breeding programmes. A modest grey fish patterned with black blotches, the marbled swordtail is a sobering example of how a desert spring endemic can be extinguished by a single change in land use, and of how aquarists and research institutions can become the last refuge of a species.

Taxonomy & naming

Xiphophorus meyeri was described in 1988 by Manfred Schartl and Jürgen H. Schröder, two German researchers long associated with the genetics of the genus Xiphophorus. The species epithet honours the German ichthyologist Manfred K. Meyer, an eponym recognising his contributions to the study of these fishes; most of the captive stock is thought to trace back to material Meyer himself collected in 1982, though that lineage history is not fully confirmed. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Xiphophorus meyeri Schartl & Schröder, 1988 as the valid name, placing it in the genus Xiphophorus within the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers.

The genus name Xiphophorus combines the Greek xiphos, a sword, with pherein, to carry — a reference to the elongated lower caudal-fin ray, the "sword," that gives the swordtails their name. Despite the genus name and the common English label "marbled swordtail," X. meyeri belongs to the platyfish group within Xiphophorus rather than to the true long-sworded swordtails; its males do not develop a pronounced sword. The genus as a whole — guppies' relatives that include the familiar platies and swordtails of the hobby — has been intensively studied as a model system for the genetics of pigmentation and of melanoma, which lends species like meyeri a scientific value out of proportion to their obscurity.

In the literature and hobby the fish also circulates under the names Northern platyfish and, after its type locality, the Muzquiz platy. Two colour forms are recognised: a common, dominant spotted form bearing prominent black blotches, and a rarer, recessive wild or unspotted form that lacks the deep-lying macromelanophores responsible for the marbling.

Morphology

Xiphophorus meyeri is a small platyfish, with most individuals under about 1.5 in. FishBase gives a maximum total length of roughly 1 in for males and unsexed fish and about 1.5 in for females, the larger size of females following the usual poeciliid pattern. The body is the compact, laterally compressed shape typical of platies rather than the slender, sword-bearing form of the true swordtails.

The base colouration is a plain greyish, overlaid in the common form by prominent black blotches scattered across the body — the "marbling" of the common name. These macromelanophore spots mark the body but generally not the fins. A second, less frequent form lacks these deep-lying pigment cells and so appears unspotted; this wild form is recessive and is the rarer of the two in captive stock, where the spotted form dominates.

As in all poeciliids the sexes differ. Males are smaller and bear the gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays used to transfer sperm; females are larger, deeper-bodied, and develop a gravid patch when carrying young. The species does not develop the elongated caudal sword of its swordtail relatives, so sexing rests mainly on the gonopodium and on overall size and body depth rather than on fin shape.

Habitat

Historically Xiphophorus meyeri was a narrow-range endemic, known only from spring-fed waters at Melchor Muzquiz in Coahuila, northern Mexico — specifically the springs of La Cascada and El Socavón and the connecting creeks, two closely spaced locations with an extent of occurrence of only around 2,000 square kilometres. This places it in the Río Salado ecoregion of the arid northern Mexican interior, a landscape where isolated springs support small, highly localised fish faunas.

The native habitat was clean, clear, spring-fed pools with submerged aquatic and riparian vegetation and moderate flow, draining as a small creek toward Muzquiz. Over time these springs were modified by people: the pools were converted into albercas — masonry swimming and recreational pools — within what became a municipal park (the Parque La Cascada / Socavón area), so that the fish persisted for a time in a semi-natural, human-altered spring system rather than a pristine one.

The species is a freshwater, benthopelagic, non-migratory fish of warm tropical conditions. Recorded water parameters are a temperature range of about 73–82 °F, a pH of roughly 7.0 to 7.7, and a hardness in the range of about 5 to 20 dH — the neutral-to-slightly-alkaline, moderately hard water characteristic of limestone spring outflows in the region. Its classification among wetlands and permanent rivers, streams and creeks reflects this spring-and-creek setting.

Feeding

Detailed dietary studies for Xiphophorus meyeri are sparse, but its biology is that of a small omnivorous platyfish. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.1, consistent with a mixed diet of small invertebrates together with algae and detritus rather than strict predation or strict herbivory. In a clear, vegetated spring pool such a fish would graze aufwuchs — the film of algae and micro-organisms on submerged surfaces — and take small aquatic invertebrates and insect larvae from the substrate and water column.

In captivity the marbled swordtail is handled like other platies: it accepts good-quality flake and small pellets readily and benefits from a share of vegetable or algal matter alongside small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp and finely chopped bloodworm. A varied diet supports colour and breeding condition, and as with most small poeciliids several modest feedings suit it better than a single large one. No specialised feeding requirement is recorded for the species.

Mating

Like all poeciliids, Xiphophorus meyeri reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male uses the gonopodium — the modified, rod-like anal fin — to transfer sperm to the female, and there is no external spawning, nest or egg deposition. Reproduction in the species is reported to be somewhat erratic in captivity: breeders note that it sometimes stops for no apparent reason, a quirk that complicates the management of the limited captive population.

Specific courtship behaviour for X. meyeri is not well documented, and precise figures for the species are not available in the cached sources; data here are sparse. By analogy with other platyfish, males pursue females and attempt to align the gonopodium for insemination, and females are able to store sperm internally, so that a single mating can give rise to more than one successive brood. Because the entire captive lineage may descend from a single 1982 collection, the genetic management of mating — avoiding inbreeding within a small founder base — is a central concern of the programmes that hold the species rather than a matter of casual aquarium breeding.

Breeding

Xiphophorus meyeri is viviparous: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming, fully formed fry rather than laying eggs, the defining reproductive mode of the live-bearing poeciliids. The cached sources do not give species-specific figures for gestation length or brood size, and these should not be invented; in the broader platyfish pattern, gestation runs on the order of several weeks and broods number from a handful to a few dozen fry depending on the size and condition of the female. The species is rated by FishBase as having high resilience, with a minimum population doubling time of under fifteen months, indicating that under good conditions it can reproduce quickly enough to rebuild numbers.

In practice, breeding the marbled swordtail has proven less straightforward than its resilience rating might suggest. The captive stock is reported to be susceptible to mycobacterial infection, and reproduction can halt unpredictably, both of which make sustained, well-managed breeding important. As with other small livebearers, fry need cover and fine first foods and can be eaten by adults, so deliberate management of the brood is required to raise good numbers — a routine task that, for a species extinct in the wild, carries unusual weight.

In the aquarium

Xiphophorus meyeri is not a fish of the general aquarium trade. It is not in commercial trade and is not utilised commercially; instead it is maintained as a conservation animal within coordinated breeding programmes, and it is described as only moderately represented in dedicated aquarium stock. Anyone keeping the species is in practice contributing to its ex-situ survival rather than simply enjoying a community fish, and the responsible route to obtaining it is through the managed programmes rather than ordinary commerce.

Husbandry follows the general platyfish pattern: neutral to slightly alkaline, moderately hard water around 73–82 °F, a pH near 7.0 to 7.7, a hardness of roughly 5 to 20 dH, clean conditions and stable parameters, with planted cover to shelter fry. Two husbandry cautions are specific to this species. First, the stock is prone to mycobacteria, so scrupulous hygiene and quarantine matter more than usual. Second, reproduction can stop without obvious cause, so keepers managing the line watch breeding closely rather than assuming it will simply continue. Given the species' status, the goal of keeping it is the maintenance of a genetically healthy population, not decorative display.

Conservation

Xiphophorus meyeri is assessed as Extinct in the Wild on the IUCN Red List (category EW, version 3.1), in an assessment dated 31 October 2018 and published in 2019. The species was last recorded in its native springs in 1997, and earlier assessments charted a steady decline — listed as Endangered in 1996 and earlier — before the final move to Extinct in the Wild. The single cause was the loss of its habitat: water abstraction for nearby mining dried out the springs at Melchor Muzquiz on which the entire species depended. That abstraction has since ceased and the habitat is reported to have recovered, which is what makes reintroduction a realistic conservation goal rather than a lost cause.

The only known survivors are held in captivity, principally at the Texas Xiphophorus centre at Texas State University in San Marcos, with managed populations maintained under coordinated ex-situ programmes including a European Association of Zoos and Aquaria effort for poeciliids and a dedicated Northern Platyfish project. The species is also listed under Mexico's NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010. Because all stock may descend from a single 1982 collection, the central conservation tasks are maintaining genetic health within that narrow founder base, controlling disease such as mycobacteriosis, and ultimately returning fish to the recovered springs.

The story of Xiphophorus meyeri is a compact lesson in the vulnerability of spring endemics. A fish confined to two pools in a desert town can be eliminated from the wild by a single industrial demand on its water, and its continued existence then rests entirely on the discipline of the people and institutions breeding it in tanks. For an aquarist, it is a reminder that captive populations are not a substitute for habitat, but can be the bridge that carries a species across the gap until its habitat returns.
