Xiphophorus milleri is a small, plainly-coloured platyfish known from a single Mexican lake — Laguna Catemaco, in the highlands of southern Veracruz. Described by Donn Rosen in 1960 and named for the American ichthyologist Robert Rush Miller, it is one of the more narrowly distributed members of the platy-and-swordtail genus Xiphophorus, sharing its lake with the much commoner green swordtail. Modest in size and quietly variable in colour, the Catemaco platyfish is a livebearer's livebearer: undemanding, prolific, and tied to the warm, shallow shoreline waters of one of Mexico's best-known crater lakes.

Taxonomy & naming

Xiphophorus milleri was described by Donn Eric Rosen in 1960 as part of his major revision of the platyfishes and swordtails. The genus Xiphophorus — Greek xiphos, "sword," plus pherein, "to carry" — was erected for the swordtails, whose males carry a sword-like extension of the lower caudal fin, but the genus as understood today also contains the swordless platyfishes, of which milleri is one. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Xiphophorus milleri Rosen, 1960 as the valid name, placing it in the subfamily Poeciliinae of the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers.

The specific epithet honours Robert Rush Miller (1916–2003), the American ichthyologist and conservationist who devoted much of his career to the freshwater fishes of Mexico. The eponym is fitting: milleri is a Mexican endemic, and Miller's fieldwork did much to document the very fauna to which this species belongs. Within Xiphophorus the species sits among the platyfishes rather than the true swordtails, lacking the elongated caudal sword that gives the genus its name.

The genus Xiphophorus has long been a model system in genetics and evolutionary biology, particularly for studies of pigmentation, hybridisation, and the genetics of melanoma, and the platyfish species in general have been intensively studied for these reasons. X. milleri itself is far less familiar than its laboratory-famous relatives X. maculatus and X. hellerii, and the published literature on it is correspondingly sparse.

Morphology

Xiphophorus milleri is a small platyfish with pronounced sexual size dimorphism. Males reach about 1 in in total length, while females grow larger, to roughly 2 in. The body is the typical compact, somewhat deep-bodied platy form, without the caudal sword of the true swordtails — milleri is a swordless member of the genus.

Colouration in the wild is comparatively subdued relative to the gaudy aquarium swordtails, but the species is reported to show several colour phenotypes or morphs both in nature and in hobby stock, a variability that runs through much of Xiphophorus. As in all poeciliids, the most reliable distinguishing structure between the sexes is the male's anal fin, modified into a gonopodium (see Mating); females retain a normal fan-shaped anal fin and, when carrying young, develop a darkened gravid region toward the rear of the abdomen.

Data on finer morphological detail for this species are sparse in the accessible literature, and much of what is recorded traces to compilations such as Wischnath's Atlas of Livebearers of the World rather than to a dedicated modern redescription.

Habitat

Xiphophorus milleri is endemic to the Laguna Catemaco basin in Veracruz, southern Mexico, within the Papaloapan freshwater ecoregion. Lake Catemaco is a large, warm, volcanic lake in the Sierra de Los Tuxtlas, and milleri is essentially restricted to it and its immediate margins. The species is benthopelagic and strongly tied to very shallow water: adults occur mainly in the shallow tributaries feeding the lake and in the shallow mouths of inlets along the shoreline, often in water only about ten centimetres deep, where they sometimes form large aggregations.

The waters it inhabits are tropical and warm, broadly in the range of 75–82 °F, and run to the alkaline side, with a reported pH up to about 7.5 and hardness around 4 to 15 dH. The species is recorded from fresh and slightly brackish water and is found at depths down to roughly 7 ft, though its strong preference is for the very shallow shoreline zone. In Lake Catemaco it lives sympatrically with the green swordtail, Xiphophorus hellerii, the two species sharing the same lake.

Because its entire known range is a single lake system, X. milleri is a textbook narrow endemic — abundant locally but with no natural distribution beyond the Catemaco basin.

Feeding

Xiphophorus milleri is an omnivore, sitting at a trophic level of about 3.1 — typical of the platyfishes, which combine grazing on plant and algal material with the capture of small animal prey. In its shallow shoreline habitat the species grazes aufwuchs and algae and takes micro-invertebrates and other small items from the substrate and water column.

In the aquarium the species is undemanding and accepts the standard livebearer fare: good-quality flake and micro-pellets supplemented with small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia and brine shrimp, together with a vegetable or algal component that suits its natural grazing habit. As with other small, near-constant feeders, several modest feedings a day suit it better than a single large meal.

Specific dietary studies for this species are not abundant; the omnivorous, algae-grazing picture is inferred from its trophic level and from the general biology of the platyfishes rather than from a detailed gut-content analysis of milleri itself.

Mating

Like all poeciliids, Xiphophorus milleri reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male's anal fin is modified into a gonopodium — a slender, mobile intromittent organ formed from elongated and fused anal-fin rays — through which packets of sperm are transferred to the female. There is no egg-laying and no external spawning; fertilisation occurs inside the female's body.

As in related platyfishes, males pursue females and attempt to mate more or less continuously, and females are able to store viable sperm internally for extended periods, so that a single insemination can fuel several successive broods. This sperm storage is a general and important feature of poeciliid reproduction and means an isolated female can continue to produce young long after being separated from males.

Detailed courtship behaviour specific to milleri is poorly documented. The species' several colour morphs hint at the kind of pigment variation that, in better-studied Xiphophorus, interacts with mate choice, but for milleri itself the published behavioural record is sparse and the broad poeciliid pattern is the safest description.

Breeding

Xiphophorus milleri is a viviparous livebearer. After internal fertilisation the female carries the developing young through a gestation of about 24 to 28 days, then gives birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. Reported brood sizes are substantial for so small a fish — roughly 15 to 50 young per brood — and, thanks to stored sperm, a female can produce a sequence of broods from a single mating.

The species is classed as highly resilient, with a population doubling time estimated at under fifteen months, reflecting the rapid, prolific reproduction characteristic of the platyfishes. The newborn fry are fully formed miniatures, able to swim and feed immediately, and in the aquarium they need cover from the outset, since adult poeciliids — including the mother — will readily take their own young. Dense planting or separating the fry are the usual ways to raise good numbers.

Superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages — occurs in some poeciliids but is not specifically documented for X. milleri, and the gestation-and-brood figures above describe the conventional single-brood pattern reported for the species.

In the aquarium

The Catemaco platyfish is a hardy, peaceful, easily kept livebearer and is traded as an aquarium fish, though it is far less common than the mass-bred platies and swordtails. It is a small, sociable shoreline species best kept in groups, and like other poeciliids it benefits from a ratio skewed toward females to spread out male attention. Its prolific breeding means that, as with most livebearers, population control becomes the real long-term management task.

Water chemistry should mirror its natural lake: warm, broadly 75–82 °F, neutral to slightly alkaline (pH up to around 7.5) and moderately hard. The species appreciates clean, stable conditions and the kind of well-planted, shallow-margined tank that echoes its native inlet shallows. It is harmless and undemanding, a sound choice for a livebearer-focused or peaceful community aquarium.

For hobbyists interested in maintaining wild-type Mexican livebearers, X. milleri is a worthwhile species precisely because it is a narrow endemic: keeping pure, well-documented stock has conservation value for a fish whose entire natural range is one lake.

Conservation

Xiphophorus milleri was assessed for the IUCN Red List on 15 March 2018 and listed as Data Deficient (DD), by assessor Héctor Espinosa Pérez. A Data Deficient listing means there is not enough information to make a direct or indirect assessment of the species' risk of extinction — it is neither a clean bill of health nor a finding of threat, but a flag that the species needs more study.

That designation is significant for a single-lake endemic. Because X. milleri is restricted to the Laguna Catemaco basin, its fate is bound entirely to the condition of one volcanic lake and its inlet streams, and a narrowly distributed species is inherently more exposed to local pressures — habitat alteration, water-quality decline, and introduced species — than a widespread one. The Data Deficient status underlines how little is securely known about its population size and trend.

The species is not listed under CITES or CMS. For aquarists the practical conservation contribution is straightforward: maintain pure, locality-true stock of this Mexican endemic, and never release aquarium fish into local waters.
