Xiphophorus nigrensis is a small, narrow-range Mexican swordtail that has become one of the most important fishes in the study of how mating systems evolve. Endemic to the Río Choy in the Río Pánuco basin of San Luis Potosí, this modest livebearer carries a genetic switch on the Y chromosome that sorts adult males into discrete size classes — large, sword-bearing courters and small, drab sneakers — each pursuing a different strategy to father young. For aquarists it is an unassuming, peaceful poeciliid; for biologists it is a living laboratory for sexual selection, female choice and the maintenance of genetic variation in the wild.

Taxonomy & naming

Xiphophorus nigrensis was described by the American ichthyologist Donn Eric Rosen in 1960, as part of his broad revision of the platyfishes and swordtails of the genus Xiphophorus. The species belongs to the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers, within the order Cyprinodontiformes; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Xiphophorus nigrensis Rosen, 1960 as the valid name. The fish is a member of the so-called northern swordtail group of Xiphophorus, a cluster of closely related species from the Pánuco drainage of north-eastern Mexico that has been the focus of intensive phylogenetic and behavioural work.

The genus name Xiphophorus comes from the Greek xiphos, a sword, and pherein, to carry — "sword-bearer" — in reference to the elongated lower caudal-fin rays that form the characteristic "sword" of the larger males. The specific epithet nigrensis refers to the type locality region; the fish is sometimes called the Panuco swordtail in the hobby after the river basin it inhabits. Because its range is so restricted and it sits within a tight knot of similar northern swordtails, X. nigrensis is most reliably identified by locality together with the genetically determined male size structure that distinguishes it.

Morphology

Xiphophorus nigrensis is a small swordtail, reaching about 2.5 in in total length in both sexes. The body is the typical elongate, laterally compressed poeciliid form, generally olive to tan with subtle dark markings; it lacks the bold, saturated colour of the ornamental swordtails familiar from the trade. Its most distinctive feature is not a single fixed appearance but a striking variation among males.

Males of this species occur in several discrete adult size classes rather than along a smooth continuum, and the differences are genetically fixed at the point of maturity. Large males develop a pronounced caudal sword — the extended lower lobe of the tail fin — and a deeper, more conspicuous body; small males remain compact, plain and largely swordless, resembling juveniles or females in overall impression. As in all poeciliids, the male's anal fin is modified into a gonopodium, a rod-like intromittent organ used to transfer sperm. Females are plainer still, with a deeper-bodied profile and the dark gravid patch typical of livebearing females when carrying young. The body-size classes show little overlap, a clean polymorphism that is the species' biological signature.

Habitat

Xiphophorus nigrensis is a narrow-range endemic, known from the Río Choy within the Río Pánuco basin in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. This places it among the El Abra region fishes of north-eastern Mexico, a karstic landscape of clear spring-fed rivers. According to FishBase, the species inhabits fast-flowing river segments with steep banks and overhanging bank vegetation, microhabitats that offer both current and cover.

The water it lives in is warm and hard. FishBase records a tropical temperature regime of roughly 75–77 °F, a pH up to about 7.5, and water hardness up to around 25 dH — neutral to alkaline, mineral-rich conditions consistent with the limestone springs of the region. Because its entire documented distribution is confined to a single small river system, the species is inherently vulnerable to any local change in flow, water quality or introduced competitors, even though its population biology (see Conservation) is otherwise robust.

Feeding

Specific dietary studies for Xiphophorus nigrensis are sparse, but its trophic position and family biology give a clear picture. FishBase places the species at a trophic level of about 3.1, consistent with an opportunistic omnivore that leans toward small animal prey. Like other northern swordtails, it can be expected to take aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae and other small drifting items from the current, supplemented by algae, biofilm and detritus grazed from surfaces in its fast-flowing habitat.

In the aquarium the species is undemanding and accepts the standard livebearer fare: good-quality flake and micro-pellets together with small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp and finely chopped bloodworm. A portion of vegetable or algal matter rounds out the diet and supports condition. Several small feedings suit a small, near-constant grazer better than one large meal.

Mating

The mating system of Xiphophorus nigrensis is the reason the species is studied so intensively. Adult male size is controlled by a Y-linked locus (the P locus) at which three alleles — designated s, I and L — produce three discrete adult male size classes with little overlap. Crucially, size and courtship tactic are linked: large males act as "courters," performing a swordtail courtship display in front of females, while small males act as "sneakers," using chasing and forced (sneak) copulation rather than display to achieve matings. This is a textbook example of genetically determined alternative reproductive tactics.

Reproduction is internal, as in all poeciliids: the male transfers sperm to the female by means of the gonopodium, the modified anal fin. Female choice is an active force in this system. Females generally prefer larger courter males, and work from the Morris and Ryan research programme (e.g. Ryan 1989; Morris & Ryan 1990; Fitschen-Brown 2023) has shown that factors such as male genotype and growth rate influence female mate preference. The interplay of female preference for large courters and the persistence of small sneaker males is central to how the size polymorphism is maintained in the wild, making X. nigrensis a model for sexual selection and the evolution of mating strategies.

Breeding

Xiphophorus nigrensis is a viviparous livebearer with internal fertilisation, the reproductive mode that defines the Poeciliidae. After fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos internally and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. FishBase reports a gestation of about 24–28 days, after which the female drops roughly 10–15 young, rarely up to 20. As in other poeciliids, females can store sperm and may produce successive broods, and the species' high resilience (a population doubling time under about 15 months) reflects this steady, repeated reproduction.

In captivity the species breeds readily under stable, warm, hard-water conditions. The newborn fry are fully formed and able to swim and feed at once, but adults — including the mother — will eat fry, so dense planting, floating cover, or separation of the young is needed to raise good numbers. Fry grow on finely powdered foods and newly hatched brine shrimp, and the male size polymorphism only becomes apparent as males approach maturity, when courter and sneaker phenotypes diverge. For aquarists interested in the species' famous biology, rearing fry from known parents is the route by which the inherited male size classes can be observed directly.

In the aquarium

Xiphophorus nigrensis is a peaceful, undemanding swordtail rather than a flashy ornamental, and it is kept mostly by livebearer specialists and aquarists interested in its biology. It is an active midwater fish best kept in groups; because males pursue females persistently, a sex ratio skewed toward females helps spread out attention and reduce harassment of any single individual. A modest planted aquarium with some water movement suits it, echoing the flowing, vegetated banks of its native Río Choy.

Water chemistry should match the species' hard-water origins: neutral to alkaline water, pH around 7 to 7.5, moderate to high hardness (up to roughly 25 dH), and warm temperatures near 75–77 °F. The fish is hardy within those parameters and appreciates clean, stable conditions and good filtration. It is a sound community member with similarly sized, gentle tankmates, though boisterous or much larger fish make poor companions. One responsibility specific to this species: because it is a narrow-range endemic and a research animal, keepers value maintaining pure, locality-true stock and avoiding hybridisation with other Xiphophorus, which interbreed readily.

Conservation

Xiphophorus nigrensis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment dated 29 March 2018 (IUCN species ID 191790). A Data Deficient listing means there is insufficient information to make a direct assessment of extinction risk, not that the species is necessarily secure; for a fish whose entire known range is a single small river, that uncertainty is itself a flag for attention. The species is not listed on CITES.

The principal conservation concern follows from the species' geography. As a narrow-range endemic confined to the Río Choy in the Río Pánuco basin, X. nigrensis is exposed to any local pressure on its habitat — altered flow, water-quality decline, or the introduction of non-native competitors and predators — and its restricted distribution leaves little buffer against such events. Its strong reproductive resilience offers some protection at the population level, but for an endemic of this kind, the maintenance of intact, well-studied habitat in the El Abra region remains the key to its long-term survival, and captive specialist populations help preserve locality-true genetic stock.
