The variable platyfish is the hardier, more cold-tolerant cousin of the better-known southern platy, a small Mexican livebearer that has been a fixture of the aquarium hobby for more than a century. Endemic to the warm springs, weedy canals and ditches of the Atlantic slope of eastern Mexico, Xiphophorus variatus earns its name honestly: wild and domestic stocks alike show a remarkable spread of body colour and pattern, from olive-tan field fish to the saturated sunset, marigold and tiger-striped strains of the trade. Undemanding, peaceful and almost ceaselessly fecund, it is one of the classic beginner's livebearers, yet it belongs to a genus — the platies and swordtails — that has become one of the most intensively studied groups in the genetics of pigmentation and cancer.

Taxonomy & naming

Xiphophorus variatus was described by the American ichthyologist Seth Eugene Meek in 1904, from Mexican material, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Xiphophorus variatus (Meek, 1904) as the valid name. The parentheses around the authority indicate that Meek originally placed the species in a different genus; it has since been combined into Xiphophorus, the genus of platies and swordtails within the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers. In the older and hobby literature it has circulated under names such as Platypoecilus variatus, reflecting the historical separation of the "platies" (Platypoecilus) from the sword-tailed Xiphophorus before the genera were merged.

The genus Xiphophorus unites the platies and the swordtails — superficially two body plans, but a single closely knit lineage in which the sword (an elongation of the lower caudal-fin rays in males) has been gained and lost repeatedly. Xiphophorus variatus is a platy: males lack a true sword, though some show a slight extension of the lower caudal lobe. It is one of three platy species long established in the hobby alongside the southern platy (X. maculatus) and the Mexican swordtail-platy complex, and the three interbreed readily in captivity, which is why so much commercial "platy" stock is of mixed ancestry.

The genus is also a workhorse of biology. Crosses between Xiphophorus species — variatus among them — produce hybrids prone to melanoma, and the resulting Gordon–Kosswig melanoma system has made these little fishes a long-standing model for the genetics of pigment cells and cancer, work that runs in parallel with their century-long career as ornamental aquarium fish.

Morphology

Xiphophorus variatus is a small, deep-bodied livebearer. Males reach about 2 in and females a little larger, with a recorded maximum total length around 3 in; common length in the field is nearer 1.5 in. The body is laterally compressed and fuller-bodied than a guppy's, with a rounded snout and an upturned mouth suited to grazing the surface and picking at substrate. As in all poeciliids, the sexes are readily told apart once mature.

The species lives up to its name in colour. Wild fish range from plain olive and tan to individuals patterned with rows of dark spots and chevrons along the flanks and a wash of yellow, orange or blue on the body and fins; the dorsal fin in particular often carries pigment. Selective breeding has multiplied this natural variability into the familiar trade strains — sunset, marigold, hawaii, tiger and tuxedo platies among them — with whole-body colour and finnage well beyond anything in the wild populations.

The defining male structure is the gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to transfer sperm internally — the hallmark of the live-bearing poeciliids. Females retain a normal fan-shaped anal fin, are deeper-bodied and plainer, and develop a dark gravid patch at the rear of the abdomen when carrying young.

Habitat

Xiphophorus variatus is endemic to the Atlantic (Gulf) slope of eastern Mexico, where its native range runs from southern Tamaulipas through eastern San Luis Potosí and into northern Veracruz. Within that range it occupies warm springs and their outflows, weedy canals, ditches, and the slow vegetated margins of streams and pools — small, often densely planted waters rather than open river channels.

FishBase characterises the species as a subtropical, benthopelagic, non-migratory freshwater fish living across roughly 59–77 °F, with a reported pH range of about 7.0–8.0 and hardness of around 9–19 dH. That cooler temperature tolerance is biologically notable: variatus handles distinctly lower temperatures than most tropical livebearers, which is one reason it has long been recommended for unheated or lightly heated aquaria. It generally favours neutral to hard, alkaline water, consistent with the spring-fed and mineral-rich habitats it occupies.

That same hardiness and live-bearing fecundity have made the species an effective coloniser outside its native range. It has been introduced to various countries through the aquarium trade and mosquito-control efforts, and FishBase notes at least one country reporting adverse ecological impacts from established populations — a reminder that an adaptable livebearer turned loose in suitable climate can entrench itself quickly.

Feeding

In the wild Xiphophorus variatus is an omnivore with a low trophic level (FishBase gives about 2.8), taking worms, small crustaceans and aquatic insects together with a substantial share of algae and plant matter. The upturned mouth and constant grazing behaviour reflect a diet gathered in small mouthfuls from surfaces, the substrate and the water column across the day rather than in a few large meals.

In the aquarium the species is undemanding and accepts almost anything offered: good-quality flake and micro-pellets supplemented with small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp and bloodworm. Because plant matter is a genuine part of its natural diet, a vegetable or algae-based component — spirulina flake, blanched greens, or grazing on aufwuchs in a planted tank — keeps the fish in good colour and condition. Frequent small feedings suit a near-constant grazer better than one heavy meal, and as with most hardy livebearers overfeeding is the more common husbandry error than underfeeding.

Mating

Reproduction in Xiphophorus variatus is internal and continuous, with no nest, no territory and no parental investment beyond gestation. Mature males pursue females persistently, alternating between brief courtship approaches and direct mating attempts, and transfer sperm using the gonopodium — the modified anal fin that swings forward to deliver packets of sperm to the female's vent. Females can store viable sperm internally for an extended period and produce several successive broods from a single mating, so an isolated female may continue to deliver fry for months after being separated from males.

As in the platies and swordtails generally, there is scope for female choice and for male–male competition, and the genus is a classic subject in studies of sexual selection and the evolution of male ornaments. In variatus the male ornament is colour and fin pigment rather than the caudal sword of its swordtail relatives, but the underlying machinery — internal fertilisation, sperm storage and continuous reproduction — is the shared poeciliid template, and it is exactly this machinery that makes the species so reliably prolific in captivity.

Breeding

Xiphophorus variatus is a prolific, easy livebearer and breeds readily in the home aquarium with little encouragement. After internal fertilisation the female carries the developing young and gives birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs; FishBase reports a gestation of about 24 days and broods of up to roughly 100 young, with multiple broods produced through the year and an overall resilience rated high. Brood size scales with the size and condition of the female, and stored sperm allows successive broods to follow without further mating.

The newborn fry are fully formed miniature fish, able to swim and feed from birth. They need cover immediately, because adult variatus — including the mother — will eat fry given the chance; dense planting, floating plants or thickets of fine-leaved vegetation let a useful number survive, and serious breeders move gravid females to a separate tank or use breeding traps. The fry grow quickly on powdered foods, infusoria and newly hatched brine shrimp, and males begin to colour up and develop the gonopodium within a few weeks. This combination of continuous breeding, large broods, rapid maturation and live birth is what has kept the species a beginner's first breeding success for generations.

In the aquarium

The variable platy is a model beginner's livebearer: small, colourful, peaceful, exceptionally hardy and forgiving of imperfect conditions. It is an active midwater-and-surface fish best kept in a group, and because males pester females, a ratio skewed toward females reduces harassment of any single fish. A modest aquarium houses a group comfortably, though the species' relentless breeding means population control soon becomes the real management task.

Water chemistry should reflect the species' preference for neutral to hard, slightly alkaline water; hobby sources broadly agree on a pH around 7–8 and report success across roughly 70–82 °F. Its cool-tolerance is a genuine practical advantage — variatus copes with distinctly lower temperatures than most tropical livebearers and can be kept in unheated or lightly heated tanks in temperate rooms, which is part of its enduring appeal. A planted aquarium with some open swimming space, a degree of vegetable matter in the diet and stable, clean water suits it well.

It is a peaceful community fish that mixes well with other calm, similarly sized species, and the long-finned trade strains do best away from determined fin-nippers. As with other heavily line-bred livebearers, sourcing healthy, vigorous stock matters: well-bred variatus are robust, but tired commercial strains can be more prone to disease.

Conservation

Xiphophorus variatus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment dated 28 March 2018. The species is widespread within its eastern Mexican range, occupies a broad span of spring, canal and ditch habitats, tolerates degraded and disturbed waters, and is not considered to face significant range-wide threat.

As with many hardy livebearers, the more pressing conservation issue runs in the opposite direction. Because of its tolerance of cool water and its live-bearing fecundity, Xiphophorus variatus has been moved well beyond its native range through the aquarium trade and mosquito-control programmes, and FishBase records at least one country reporting adverse ecological impacts from introduced populations. The responsible position for an aquarist is therefore straightforward: enjoy the fish in the tank, but never release unwanted variatus or their fry into local waters, where this adaptable little platy can establish itself all too easily.
