Taxonomy & naming
Xiphophorus xiphidium was described in 1932 by Myron Gordon under the name Platypoecilus xiphidium — that is, originally as a platy. Gordon, who worked extensively on the genetics of Mexican poeciliids, recognised it as a platy-type fish bearing a small caudal sword, and the species epithet xiphidium, the Greek for "little sword," captures exactly that intermediate character. When the genera Platypoecilus and Xiphophorus were later merged — the platies and swordtails proving to be a single natural group rather than two — the fish took its current combination Xiphophorus xiphidium (Gordon, 1932), the parentheses recording the change of genus from the original description.
The species belongs to the family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae, within the order Cyprinodontiformes — the New World livebearing toothcarps. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name. Within Xiphophorus, the genus comprising the platies and swordtails of Mexico and Central America, X. xiphidium is one of the "platy-type" species: short-finned and deep-bodied like the southern and variable platies rather than long-sworded like X. hellerii. The genus has been a workhorse of vertebrate genetics — Gordon, Kallman and others used Xiphophorus crosses to study pigment-cell inheritance and melanoma — and X. xiphidium figures in that body of work as one of the genetically characterised northern species.
Morphology
This is a small fish. Males reach about 1.5 in in total length, females a little larger at around 2 in; published figures include a maximum of roughly 2 in standard length. The body is the deep, laterally compressed, platy-like form of the short-finned Xiphophorus — stockier and rounder than a true swordtail — with a small upturned mouth suited to feeding from the surface and water column. Ground colour is a pale tan to olive, often with faint vertical bars or a scatter of dark speckles along the flanks and a series of small spots; wild fish are subtly rather than gaudily marked, and populations vary in their pattern.
The feature that gives the fish its name is the short caudal "sword" of the male: a modest downward extension of the lower edge of the tail fin, far shorter than the long, pigment-edged blade of the green swordtail, which is why the common name renders it a swordtail platyfish rather than a true swordtail. As in all poeciliids the male's anal fin is modified into a gonopodium, the rod-like intromittent organ used in internal fertilisation. Sexual dimorphism is otherwise typical of the family — males smaller and slimmer with the gonopodium and the small sword, females larger, deeper-bodied and plainer, developing a dark gravid patch toward the rear of the abdomen when carrying young.
Habitat
Xiphophorus xiphidium is endemic to the Río Soto la Marina basin in north-eastern Mexico, in the states of Tamaulipas and Nuevo León. The river rises in the Sierra Madre Oriental, gathers spring-fed tributaries draining the base of the Sierra Madre and the Sierra San Carlos, and flows east to the Gulf of Mexico. The fish occupies springs, streams, arroyos and the quieter reaches of the river itself, favouring tranquil zones of slow-flowing water — ditches, spring heads, marshes and ponds — rather than fast current.
The water it lives in ranges from clear to muddy, over bottoms of mud, clay, gravel and rock, and aquatic and marginal vegetation is typically abundant in its habitat. Recorded conditions are warm, moderately hard and alkaline: temperatures broadly in the range of about 64–77 °F, pH around 7.2 to 8.2, and hardness on the order of 15 to 25 dH. This is spring-fed, mineral-rich water typical of the limestone country at the foot of the Sierra Madre, and reproducing it — hard, alkaline and well-planted — is the key to keeping the species in good condition.
Feeding
Like its platy and swordtail relatives, X. xiphidium is an omnivore that leans on small animal prey and plant matter alike; its trophic position (around 3.1) places it among the micro-predators that also graze. In the wild it takes small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, crustaceans and zooplankton along with algae, biofilm and detritus, working the surface and the upper water column of the calm habitats it prefers.
In the aquarium it is undemanding. A good-quality flake or small pellet forms a sound staple, supplemented with small live and frozen foods — Daphnia, brine shrimp, microworm, cyclops and finely chopped bloodworm — to bring fish into breeding condition and to vary the diet. A regular share of vegetable or algal matter suits this grazing fish and supports colour. As with other small livebearers, several modest feedings a day are better than one heavy meal, and overfeeding is the more common error in a planted tank where the fish will also pick at biofilm and soft algae on their own.
Mating
Reproduction in X. xiphidium is internal, the defining feature of the poeciliid livebearers. The male fertilises the female by means of the gonopodium — a tubular organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin — which he swings forward to make contact and transfer sperm. There is no nest and no spawning site: males pursue females more or less continuously, combining brief courtship with persistent sneak-mating attempts, and the female, once inseminated, can store viable sperm internally for some time, so that a single mating may fuel more than one successive brood.
As in the genus generally, the male's short sword and any colour he carries function in courtship and male–male interaction, and females exert mate choice. One practical point dominates the keeping of this species: Xiphophorus hybridise very readily, and X. xiphidium will cross with congeners such as platies and swordtails if kept with them. Because the value of the fish to specialists lies precisely in maintaining genetically pure wild stock, it should be kept as a single-species group, away from other Xiphophorus, to prevent hybridisation.
Breeding
X. xiphidium is a straightforward, productive livebearer. After internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos through a gestation of roughly 24 to 30 days, the exact span depending on temperature, and then gives birth to free-swimming, fully formed fry rather than laying eggs. Broods are moderate for the family — commonly on the order of 20 to 50 young, with larger, well-conditioned females producing the bigger broods — and a female may deliver successive broods from stored sperm without remating.
There is no parental care; indeed the adults, including the mother, will eat the fry given the chance, so dense planting, floating cover or a separate rearing space is needed to raise good numbers. The newborn fry are large enough to take finely powdered foods and newly hatched brine shrimp from the outset and grow steadily; males begin to show the developing gonopodium and the first hint of the short sword within a few weeks. Whether superfetation — the carrying of broods at more than one stage of development simultaneously, known in some poeciliids — occurs in this species is not well documented here, so it is best treated as a single-brood-at-a-time livebearer absent firmer data.
In the aquarium
Xiphophorus xiphidium is a peaceable, small, hardy livebearer well suited to a species or quiet community setup, though it is rather more a specialist's fish than a shop staple — it is traded ornamentally but largely supplied by captive populations rather than wild collection. A modest, well-planted aquarium with open swimming space at the surface suits a group; as with most livebearers a sex ratio skewed toward females reduces the persistent harassment a lone female would otherwise receive from the males.
Water chemistry should mirror the species' spring-fed home: moderately hard, alkaline water around pH 7.2 to 8.2 and 15 to 25 dH, at temperatures of roughly 64–77 °F, kept clean and stable. The fish is undemanding within those bounds, which makes it an easy keep for anyone who can hold hard, alkaline conditions. The single firm rule is to keep it alone among Xiphophorus: do not house it with platies or swordtails, because the species will hybridise readily and the point of keeping it well is to preserve pure Soto la Marina stock. Peaceful, similarly sized, non-nipping companions are otherwise fine.
Conservation
Xiphophorus xiphidium is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessment published 2019, by T. J. Lyons). Although the species is narrowly endemic to the single Río Soto la Marina drainage, it is reported as common at a number of localities, shows no evidence of major decline, and occupies a relatively wide distribution within that basin — the combination that underlies the Least Concern listing. Part of its range falls within the Altas Cumbres protected area near Ciudad Victoria, giving some of its habitat a degree of formal protection.
The threats it does face are those of a spring-fed desert-margin river under pressure from human water use: runoff and habitat degradation from cattle ranching, and the reduction of river discharge through surface-water diversion and groundwater extraction in the Soto la Marina basin. These pressures were not evaluated in detail in the assessment, and the population trend is recorded as unknown. For a single-drainage endemic, the prudent reading is that the species is currently secure but dependent on the health of one river system, which makes the maintenance of genetically pure captive lines by livebearer hobbyists a meaningful insurance against future loss.
