Acanthopsoides hapalias is a small, seldom-seen true loach from the streams of the Lower Mekong basin in Southeast Asia. Like every member of family Cobitidae it carries the erectile suborbital spine that gives the spined loaches their name, and it makes its living the way most of its relatives do — burrowing into soft sand and sifting it for anything edible. Despite belonging to a family with several cold-hardy European and East Asian members, this is a warm-water tropical species, not a coldwater one. It stays modest in size, rarely turns up in the aquarium trade, and its life in captivity — spawning included — is very thinly documented.

Taxonomy & naming

Acanthopsoides hapalias was described by Siebert in 1991 and placed in the genus Acanthopsoides, a small assemblage of true loaches within the family Cobitidae, the spined and pond loaches. The Catalog of Fishes, the authority followed here, retains the species in Acanthopsoides; it has not been swept up in the wider re-shuffling that has moved so many other Cobitoidea genera (Botia, Nemacheilus and their relatives) around in recent decades.

The family Cobitidae is defined chiefly by an erectile spine hidden in a groove beneath the eye, a feature this species shares with familiar relatives such as the horseface loach Acantopsis and the European spined loaches of the genus Cobitis. Records of the species are sparse outside a handful of ichthyological and aquarium databases, and it has never built any presence in the hobby literature beyond brief mentions.

Morphology

Acanthopsoides hapalias is a small, elongate true loach, reported to reach only about 2–2.5 in in standard length — modest even by loach standards. As in all Cobitidae it carries a small, sharp, erectile suborbital spine folded into a groove below the eye, which can be flicked out defensively and easily catches in a soft aquarium net. The skin is effectively naked, covered only in tiny, deeply embedded scales, which leaves it — like its relatives — sensitive to harsh medication.

The body shape follows the family's sand-dwelling blueprint: slim, cylindrical and streamlined, with a pointed snout and barbels around the mouth for probing the substrate. Beyond size and habitus, detailed colour-pattern description of this species is sparse in the available literature, and the data here should be read as data-limited rather than exhaustive.

Habitat

This is a tropical species of the Lower Mekong River Basin in mainland Southeast Asia, living in freshwater streams over sandy substrates. Recorded water conditions are mild and stable — a near-neutral pH of about 6.5-7.0 and warm temperatures in the 72–81 °F range — consistent with a lowland or foothill tropical stream rather than a cool upland torrent or a temperate waterway.

Unlike the coldwater spined loaches of Europe (Cobitis, Sabanejewia) or the dojo/weather loach Misgurnus of temperate East Asia, Acanthopsoides hapalias is unambiguously a warm-water, tropical Asian species. It shares its sandy-bottomed stream habitat with the sifting, burrowing lifestyle typical of the family, favouring soft substrate over rock or gravel.

Feeding

Acanthopsoides hapalias is a sand-sifting benthic omnivore. It forages by working through the soft substrate, extracting insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates along with a share of detritus, in the same manner as the well-known horseface loach Acantopsis, though on a much smaller scale given its size.

In the aquarium this feeding style means a soft sand bed is not optional — it is how the fish is built to find food. A varied diet of sinking foods that reach the substrate — small live or frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm and brine shrimp, plus quality sinking pellets — should suit it well, mirroring what little is recorded of its wild diet.

Mating

No dedicated account of courtship or sexual dimorphism in Acanthopsoides hapalias has surfaced in the available sources. As in most small tropical Cobitidae, reliable external sexing is likely difficult, and nothing specific to this species' spawning behaviour or seasonal triggers is documented — the honest position is that the data is sparse rather than that a particular pattern can be asserted.

Breeding

As a tropical member of the spined-loach family, Acanthopsoides hapalias fits the pattern seen across Cobitidae's warm-water genera: while several temperate relatives — the European spined loaches (Cobitis, Sabanejewia) and the dojo/weather loach (Misgurnus) — have been pond- or tank-spawned by scattering adhesive eggs among plants in spring, the tropical Cobitidae such as Acantopsis and Lepidocephalichthys are generally not bred in captivity, and this species has no documented aquarium spawning record at all.

When spawning does occur in the family's egg-scattering species, it follows the same basic mode: adhesive eggs released among plants or fine substrate, with no parental care afterward. There is no reason to expect Acanthopsoides hapalias to differ, but in practice this is a species best regarded as essentially unbred in the hobby.

In the aquarium

Acanthopsoides hapalias is rare in the aquarium trade, and care information is correspondingly thin. What is recorded points to a small, undemanding tank fish: a minimum of roughly 20 US gal, warm water at 72–81 °F, a near-neutral pH of 6.5-7.0, and moderate hardness. A soft sand substrate is essential so the fish can carry out its natural sifting behaviour rather than being forced to feed off gravel or bare glass, and reported lifespan in captivity is around 3-5 years.

As with all Cobitidae, its near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper-based treatments and full-strength medications, so any dosing should be conservative. Given how little is documented about its social needs, keeping it in a small group alongside other peaceful bottom- and sand-dwelling fish, in a well-oxygenated tank with some cover, is the safest approach until more is known.

Conservation

Acanthopsoides hapalias is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern. It is a stream-dwelling species of the Lower Mekong basin, a region under considerable pressure from damming, sand mining and land-use change, but there is no documented evidence that the aquarium trade — in which the species is rare to begin with — has any measurable effect on its wild populations. Its Least Concern status reflects a currently stable, non-threatened assessment rather than active conservation attention.
