Acanthopsoides molobrion is a diminutive spined loach from the rivers of Borneo and the Malay Peninsula, rarely growing past 2 in and easily overlooked next to its larger, showier cousins. Its species name comes from the Greek for "piglet of wild swine" — a nod to both its small size and its resemblance to the much bigger horseface loach Acantopsis dialuzona. Like every member of the family Cobitidae it carries an erectile spine tucked in a groove below the eye, and it makes its living the way true loaches always have: burrowing into soft sand and sifting it for tiny invertebrates. This is a warm-water, tropical species, not one of the family's cold-hardy Eurasian relatives, and it is peaceful, quiet and almost never seen spawning in captivity.

Taxonomy & naming

Acanthopsoides molobrion was described by Siebert in 1991 and placed in the genus Acanthopsoides, a small group of Southeast Asian spined loaches closely related to the horseface loaches (Acantopsis). It belongs to the family Cobitidae — the true spined & pond loaches — the family that gives its name to the erectile suborbital spine carried by all its members. The Catalog of Fishes recognises Acanthopsoides molobrion as the valid combination; there is no widely used older name attached to this particular species in the hobby.

The species epithet molobrion derives from the Greek for "piglet of wild swine," a whimsical reference to its small size and to its passing resemblance to the larger horseface loach Acantopsis dialuzona. In the trade it is occasionally sold simply as the "Molo loach," a shortened form of the scientific name rather than a traditional common name.

Morphology

This is a small, slender, sand-coloured loach that rarely exceeds about 2 in in standard length, making it one of the more modest members of its family. As a cobitid it carries the family's signature erectile suborbital spine — a small, sharp, foldable spine tucked in a groove beneath each eye that can be flicked out when the fish is threatened or handled. Like other true loaches its skin is effectively naked, covered in tiny, deeply embedded scales rather than the overlapping scales of most fish, which leaves it sensitive to poor water quality and to medication.

Its body plan reflects a life spent buried in sand: a low, elongated profile, a pointed snout ringed with barbels for probing the substrate, and small eyes set for a bottom-dwelling, often crepuscular lifestyle. Colouration is subdued — muted sandy to olive tones with faint mottling — camouflage suited to a fish that spends much of its time partly hidden in the substrate rather than a bold, banded pattern like its botiid relatives.

Habitat

Acanthopsoides molobrion is native to the island of Borneo and the Malay Peninsula. Its type locality is the Bo River (Sungai Boh) in the Mahakam River basin of Kalimantan Timur, Indonesian Borneo, and its known distribution extends across Sarawak (Malaysian Borneo) and into Peninsular Malaysia, reaching as far north as the Maenam Tapi river system in southern Thailand.

It lives in flowing streams and rivers over soft sand and fine gravel beds, the kind of substrate it can bury into and sift for food. This is a warm, tropical freshwater habitat — not a cool upland hillstream and not a temperate system — and the species is reported from moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral water. There is no indication it tolerates brackish conditions; it is a strictly freshwater fish of Sundaland's lowland-to-midland river systems.

Feeding

Acanthopsoides molobrion is a sand-sifting benthic omnivore. In the wild it forages by burrowing into soft sand and sifting the substrate through its gills, extracting insect larvae and small crustaceans along with other tiny invertebrates and detritus — the same feeding strategy used by its larger relative, the horseface loach.

In the aquarium it accepts sinking foods readily, including prepared sinking pellets and wafers along with live or frozen Artemia, Tubifex and bloodworm. Because its natural feeding behaviour depends on a soft, diggable substrate, a fine sand bed is important for this species to forage naturally rather than simply picking food off a hard surface; without it, the fish is denied a core part of its normal behaviour.

Mating

Little is documented about courtship or sexing in Acanthopsoides molobrion specifically. Reports from keepers indicate females can be brought into gravid condition in the aquarium, showing a visibly rounder, egg-swollen body, but this has not translated into confirmed successful spawning. As a tropical member of the Cobitidae, any natural spawning trigger is presumed to follow the seasonal rains and rising water typical of Sundaland river systems, but the details have not been documented for this species.

A closely related undescribed form, Acanthopsoides sp. "A01," has reportedly spawned over a mixed sand and fine gravel substrate in captivity, hinting at what conditions might eventually work for A. molobrion, but this remains anecdotal rather than a repeatable, documented method.

Breeding

Acanthopsoides molobrion has not been successfully bred in the aquarium. As with the great majority of true loaches, this is an egg-scattering species with no parental care once eggs are released — but unlike the temperate members of the family Cobitidae (the Eurasian spined loaches Cobitis and Sabanejewia, and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus), which have been pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and breeders, the tropical Cobitidae such as Acanthopsoides and the horseface loach Acantopsis generally have not.

Keepers have reported gravid females, so the biological capacity to produce eggs is clearly present in aquarium conditions, but no verified, repeatable spawning has been documented for this species. Anyone acquiring this fish should expect to keep and enjoy it rather than to breed it; supply to the hobby comes from wild collection, not captive propagation.

In the aquarium

Acanthopsoides molobrion is a peaceful, unassuming addition to a community of similarly small, calm tankmates, and its modest adult size of around 2 in means it does not need the vast tanks its larger loach relatives eventually demand. It is reported to do well in a group of six to eight in a tank of about 20 US gal upward, reflecting the same social, shoaling tendency seen across the loach family — a lone individual is more likely to stay hidden and stressed.

A soft sand or fine gravel bed is essential, both for natural sifting behaviour and simple physical comfort against its near-scaleless skin. Being scaleless like all true loaches, it is sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength treatments generally; half-doses and gentle, loach-safe products are the safer route if disease treatment becomes necessary. As a warm-water tropical species it should be kept at tropical, not unheated, temperatures, with clean, well-oxygenated, gently flowing water that echoes its river origins.

Conservation

Acanthopsoides molobrion was assessed by the IUCN Red List in 2019 and listed as Least Concern, reflecting a distribution across multiple river systems in Borneo and the Malay Peninsula without evidence of a significant population decline. It is a small-bodied stream species rather than a narrow single-site endemic, which helps buffer it against localised habitat loss.

As with much of Sundaland's freshwater fauna, the broader long-term pressures on its habitat are development-driven — deforestation, sand and gravel extraction, and river alteration across Borneo, Peninsular Malaysia and southern Thailand — rather than any documented pressure from the aquarium trade, which handles this species only in small numbers as a specialist import.
