Acantopsis dialuzona is a horseface loach — a slender, sand-dwelling member of the true-loach family Cobitidae, endemic to the Mekong River basin of Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. Its long, tapering snout and torpedo-shaped body are built for one thing: diving headfirst into soft sand and disappearing, leaving only its eyes exposed. This is a tropical species from warm, fast-flowing streams, not one of the coldwater spined loaches of Europe and East Asia. It carries the erectile suborbital spine that names the family, has near-scaleless, medication-sensitive skin, and — like most Cobitidae from the tropics — is essentially never bred in the home aquarium.

Taxonomy & naming

Acantopsis dialuzona was described by the Dutch naturalist Johan Coenraad van Hasselt in 1823, one of the earlier loaches to be scientifically named from Southeast Asia. It belongs to the genus Acantopsis, the horseface loaches, within the family Cobitidae — the true spined and pond loaches, distinguished from the botiid loaches (clown, yoyo, zebra) by anatomy and by generally slimmer, more elongate bodies built for burrowing rather than active mid-water swimming.

The genus Acantopsis has a history of taxonomic confusion: for decades most Southeast Asian horseface loaches in the trade were sold simply as "Acantopsis dialuzona" or "Acantopsis choirorhynchos" without much distinction between look-alike species, and the genus has since been split into several valid species across the region. The Catalog of Fishes — the authority followed here — maintains Acantopsis dialuzona as a distinct, valid species restricted to the Mekong basin; this profile keeps that combination rather than lumping it with other regional horsefaces.

Morphology

This is an unmistakably elongated loach: a slender, nearly cylindrical body tapering to a long, pointed, horse-like snout that gives the group its common name. The mouth sits low and forward on the underside of the head, well suited to probing through sand, and the eyes are set high and are notably mobile — a horseface loach buried to the eyes in sand can still watch its surroundings. Reported adult size is modest, in the range of 4–5.5 in.

Like other members of Cobitidae, Acantopsis dialuzona carries a small, erectile spine hidden in a groove beneath each eye — the suborbital spine that gives the family its name. The spine can be flicked out and used defensively, and, as with all true loaches, the skin carries only tiny, deeply embedded scales, leaving the fish effectively naked and highly permeable — a fact that matters for both disease susceptibility and medication dosing.

Habitat

Acantopsis dialuzona is endemic to the Mekong River basin, occurring across Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. It lives over sandy and silty substrates in flowing streams and river margins, where it spends much of its time buried or partially buried, emerging chiefly at night to forage. This is warm, soft, acidic water typical of lowland and mid-elevation Southeast Asian rivers — not a cool or hard-water environment.

In the wild the species depends on well-oxygenated, moving water and, critically, on a fine, soft substrate it can dive into; on bare glass or coarse gravel it cannot express this natural burrowing behaviour at all. This is a tropical fish through and through, in contrast to the coldwater spined loaches of Europe (Cobitis, Sabanejewia) and the temperate dojo loach (Misgurnus), which tolerate unheated water or ponds — Acantopsis dialuzona does not.

Feeding

Acantopsis dialuzona is a sand-sifting benthic omnivore. In the wild it forages through the substrate for worms, insect larvae, small crustaceans and molluscs, taking organic detritus and some algae along the way — it feeds by working sand through its mouth and gills, sifting out edible matter and expelling the rest, a behaviour visible in aquaria with a fine, soft bed.

In the aquarium it accepts sinking pellets, wafers and frozen foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp readily once settled, but it can only feed properly if it is able to dive into and sift a soft substrate — sand or very fine, rounded gravel. Kept over coarse gravel or bare glass it struggles to forage naturally and often does poorly, so substrate choice is as much a feeding decision as a comfort one. Being largely nocturnal, it benefits from a feed after the lights go out.

Mating

Little is documented about courtship or sexual dimorphism in Acantopsis dialuzona specifically, and the species is not reliably sexed by hobbyists; as with most spined loaches, well-conditioned, egg-laden females may appear fuller-bodied than males, but no consistent external marker is established. Data on its reproductive behaviour is sparse.

Following the pattern of tropical Cobitidae generally, spawning is presumed to be linked to seasonal rains and rising water rather than a fixed calendar cue, with adults moving into shallower or more sheltered water to spawn. Recreating that seasonal trigger is beyond what a stable home aquarium normally provides, which is a major reason verified spawnings of this species in captivity are essentially unrecorded.

Breeding

Acantopsis dialuzona is, for practical purposes, not bred in home aquaria. As a member of Cobitidae it is presumed to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care, likely spawning in spring or with seasonal rains and depositing adhesive eggs among plants or vegetation, in keeping with the general pattern of the family — but this is inferred from its relatives rather than directly documented for the species.

The temperate members of Cobitidae — the European spined loaches (Cobitis, Sabanejewia) and the dojo or weather loach (Misgurnus) — have been pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and breeders under cooler, seasonal conditions. The tropical Cobitidae, including the horseface loaches of the genus Acantopsis, generally have not; the fish sold in the trade are wild-collected, not captive-bred. A keeper should not expect to breed this species at home.

In the aquarium

The single most important thing to get right with Acantopsis dialuzona is substrate: it needs a soft, fine sand bed deep enough to dive into and sift, without which it cannot express its natural burrowing and feeding behaviour and tends to become stressed and thin. Sharp or coarse gravel should be avoided outright, as it can damage the loach's sensitive underside and snout during burrowing attempts.

Give it warm, soft, well-oxygenated water with moderate to strong flow, subdued lighting, and open sandy areas alongside some cover. It does best in a species group or loose company of its own kind rather than singly, though it is less rigidly social than the botiid loaches. Like all true loaches it is essentially scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments — dose with care and prefer gentler options. A tank of at least a metre in length with a soft floor and calm tankmates suits it well.

Conservation

Acantopsis dialuzona has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. It is restricted to the Mekong basin across Thailand, Cambodia and Laos, a region under mounting pressure from damming, sand extraction and water quality decline, though no population-level data specific to this species is available.

The species is regularly available in the aquarium trade, and as with most horseface loaches this supply is understood to be wild-collected rather than farmed, meaning collection pressure and Mekong habitat degradation are both relevant, if undocumented, long-term risks. In the absence of a formal assessment or population trend data, the honest position is that its conservation status is simply unknown.
