Taxonomy & naming
Acantopsis ioa was formally described by Christine Boyd and Lawrence Page in 2017, in a revision (Zootaxa 4341(2): 151–192) that split the horseface loaches — long treated in the hobby and in older literature as one or two widespread, variable species — into a larger set of geographically distinct forms. A. ioa was one of three new species named in that paper. Its type locality is the Nam Lik, a tributary of the Nam Ngum about 4 mi upstream of their confluence, in Vientiane Province, Laos, within the Mekong River drainage.
The genus Acantopsis sits in the family Cobitidae, the true spined loaches, alongside genera such as Cobitis, Sabanejewia, Lepidocephalichthys and the dojo/weather loach Misgurnus. Older aquarium literature and trade labels that lump Southeast Asian horseface loaches under a single catch-all name (often "Acantopsis dialuzona" or "Acantopsis choirorhynchos") should be treated with caution post-2017: several of those fish are now recognised as distinct species with restricted ranges, and A. ioa is one of them. The Catalog of Fishes is the standing authority for the current, valid combination Acantopsis ioa.
Morphology
Acantopsis ioa is a slim, elongated loach reaching about 5 in SL, with the characteristic long, pointed, downturned snout — the "horseface" — shared by the whole genus. A single pair of barbels sits at the tip of the snout; unlike some related genera, Acantopsis lacks barbels along the lips, a detail used to separate it from similar-looking loaches. The caudal fin is slightly forked, and the dorsal fin carries roughly 9–11 branched rays.
As a member of the family Cobitidae, it carries the family's defining feature: a sharp, motile spine tucked in a groove beneath each eye, which can be erected when the fish is stressed or handled. Its skin is effectively naked — the scales are minute and deeply embedded — which makes it, like its relatives, easy to injure with a net and sensitive to harsh treatments in the aquarium.
Habitat
This is a Mekong basin endemic, known from river drainages in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, including the Mekong mainstem and the Srepok River. It is a tropical species — not a coldwater one — living in flowing river channels over sand and fine gravel substrate, the kind of habitat its burrowing lifestyle depends on.
Acantopsis as a genus is known to shift with the seasons, moving into flooded margins and side channels when monsoon rains raise river levels, then retreating to main-channel sand beds during drier periods. A. ioa's specific seasonal movements have not been separately documented, but its habitat and lifestyle match the sand-sifting, flowing-water pattern typical of the genus.
Feeding
Acantopsis ioa is a benthic omnivore built for a life in sand. It buries itself snout-first and sifts through the substrate for insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms and detritus, expelling the sand through its gills while retaining edible material — the classic horseface loach feeding method. This is not a fish that grazes algae or hunts in open water; virtually all of its foraging happens at or under the substrate surface.
In the aquarium it readily takes sinking foods — pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworm and similar — provided they reach the bottom where it forages. A soft sand bed is not a decorative option for this species but a functional requirement: without it, the fish cannot express its natural sifting behaviour and struggles to feed normally.
Mating
No sexual dimorphism has been documented for Acantopsis ioa in the available literature, and sexing the species by eye is not established. Like most Cobitidae, courtship and spawning behaviour has not been observed or recorded for this species, whether in the wild or in captivity.
The genus overall is presumed to spawn in response to seasonal flooding, scattering eggs rather than pairing off or guarding a nest, but no field or aquarium account of A. ioa itself confirms this. Data on its reproductive biology is sparse.
Breeding
There is no confirmed breeding record for Acantopsis ioa in the aquarium. As a member of the tropical Cobitidae, its presumed reproductive mode follows the pattern of related species: an egg-scatterer that releases adhesive eggs over vegetation or into flowing water with no parental care, likely tied to seasonal rains in the wild. This contrasts with the temperate Cobitidae — species of Cobitis, Sabanejewia and the dojo/weather loach Misgurnus — several of which have been pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and breeders; the tropical horseface loaches and their relatives such as Lepidocephalichthys generally have not.
Parental care, where the mode can be inferred at all, would be none — eggs and fry are left to develop unattended. For a keeper, the honest expectation is that this species will not spawn in a home aquarium; it should be kept and enjoyed rather than approached as a breeding project.
In the aquarium
Acantopsis ioa needs a soft, fine sand substrate above almost anything else — coarse gravel or sharp-edged decor will not let it burrow and sift as it needs to, and can injure its sensitive skin and barbels. A tank for this species should be sized generously for an active, elongated fish that reaches over 5 in, with open sandy areas for burrowing and some plant cover or driftwood at the margins.
Being a member of the near-scaleless Cobitidae, it is sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally; half-doses and gentle products are the safer approach if disease treatment becomes necessary. As a relatively recently described, Mekong-restricted species, husbandry reports specific to A. ioa are limited in the hobby literature — general Acantopsis care guidance (soft sand, warm well-oxygenated water, sinking foods, calm tankmates) is the best available guide until more species-specific accounts accumulate.
Conservation
Acantopsis ioa has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so it carries no formal conservation category; that absence reflects how recently the species was described (2017) and the general lag in assessing Mekong basin endemics, not a documented lack of threat. Its native range is confined to Mekong tributaries in Laos, Thailand and Cambodia — river systems facing well-documented pressures from damming, sand mining and habitat alteration across the wider basin.
No population trend data specific to A. ioa is available. As with many recently split, range-restricted Southeast Asian loaches, a precautionary approach to wild collection and habitat protection is warranted even in the absence of a formal Red List assessment.
