Acantopsis spectabilis is a horseface loach from the Ayeyarwady and Mekong drainages of Myanmar and mainland Southeast Asia, one of several long-snouted, sand-diving members of the family Cobitidae — the true spined loaches. Its elongated, almost horse-like profile and habit of vanishing instantly into soft sand give the genus its common name. This is a tropical species, not one of the coldwater Cobitidae, and like its relatives it carries an erectile suborbital spine and near-scaleless skin. It is a quiet, sand-sifting burrower that is only occasionally seen in the trade and, like most of its kin, is essentially unknown to breed in the home aquarium.

Taxonomy & naming

Acantopsis spectabilis was described by Edward Blyth in 1860. The genus Acantopsis has a tangled taxonomic history — for decades many horseface loaches in the trade and literature were lumped under the single widespread name Acantopsis choirorhynchos (formerly Acantopsis dialuzona was often used as a synonym or near-relative), and species boundaries within the genus have been repeatedly revised as more material is examined. The Catalog of Fishes governs the currently valid combination, and this species is recognised as Acantopsis spectabilis (Blyth, 1860) within the family Cobitidae, the true or spined loaches.

Because horseface loaches are difficult to tell apart on external characters alone, aquarium-trade identifications under the Acantopsis banner should be treated with some caution; the animal described here is the species associated with the Ayeyarwady and Mekong river systems rather than the broader, more southerly-distributed Acantopsis choirorhynchos.

Morphology

Acantopsis spectabilis has the unmistakable shape of the genus: a slender, elongated body tapering to a long, pointed, downturned snout that gives the fish its horse-like profile and its common name. The eyes sit high on the head, an adaptation for a fish that spends much of its life buried with only its eyes and the tip of its snout exposed. Reported maximum size is around 12 in standard length, making it one of the larger loaches covered in this section, though most aquarium specimens are considerably smaller.

As a true member of Cobitidae it carries the family's diagnostic feature: an erectile suborbital spine tucked into a groove beneath the eye, which the fish can flick out when threatened or handled. Its skin is covered in very small, deeply embedded scales, leaving it functionally near-scaleless — a point that matters for both disease susceptibility and medication sensitivity. Body colouration is typically a sandy tan to olive ground colour broken by a row of dark blotches along the flank, camouflage that matches the sandy riverbeds it inhabits.

Habitat

This is a tropical species native to the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) and Mekong drainages, inhabiting rivers across Myanmar and adjacent mainland Southeast Asia. It is a demersal fish of flowing water, living over beds of soft sand and fine gravel where it can bury itself rapidly — a horseface loach startled in open water will dive nose-first into the substrate and disappear within a second, leaving only its eyes visible.

Water in its native rivers is warm year-round, consistent with a tropical rather than temperate distribution. In the aquarium it needs a soft, fine substrate — sharp gravel will damage its slender, near-scaleless body during burrowing — laid at least a few centimetres deep so it can express its natural diving and sifting behaviour. Moderate to gentle current and good oxygenation, reflecting a flowing-river origin, suit it well.

Feeding

Acantopsis spectabilis is a sand-sifting benthic omnivore with a trophic level in the carnivore range, consistent with a diet built around small invertebrates. In the wild it forages by burying itself and sifting through the sand for insect larvae, small crustaceans, molluscs and other invertebrates, along with some detritus.

In the aquarium it readily takes sinking foods — bloodworm, Tubifex, Daphnia and brine shrimp (Artemia), along with sinking pellets or wafers — but only if the substrate lets it feed the way it evolved to. A hard or coarse gravel bed denies it the ability to sift, so soft sand is not just cosmetic but functional: without it, this species struggles to get enough to eat even when food is present in the tank.

Mating

Detailed information on courtship and spawning behaviour in Acantopsis spectabilis is sparse; this is one of the many loach species whose reproductive biology has not been closely studied or documented outside occasional aquarist reports. What is known follows the pattern for tropical Cobitidae generally: spawning is thought to be linked to seasonal cues such as the monsoon-driven rise in river flow, rather than occurring readily or predictably under stable aquarium conditions.

External sexual dimorphism has not been clearly documented for this species; data is sparse enough that no reliable rule for distinguishing males from females can be stated with confidence.

Breeding

As a tropical member of Cobitidae, Acantopsis spectabilis is an egg-scatterer with no parental care — spawning fish release adhesive eggs with no further involvement from either parent, the pattern typical across the family. Unlike some of the temperate spined loaches (Cobitis, Sabanejewia) and the dojo or weather loach (Misgurnus), which have been pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and breeders taking advantage of a distinct seasonal temperature cycle, the tropical Cobitidae — including the horseface loaches of Acantopsis — generally have not been bred in home aquaria.

Captive spawning is reported as rare and tied to specific environmental and seasonal triggers linked to monsoon-cycle changes in flow and water chemistry that are difficult to replicate in a tank. Where the species reaches the trade in numbers, it is understood to rely on wild-collected stock rather than any established captive-breeding programme; there is no commercial hormone-induction operation for this species comparable to the clown-loach farms of Indonesia. A keeper should regard breeding this species at home as, at best, an unsolved challenge rather than a realistic goal.

In the aquarium

Acantopsis spectabilis is a peaceful, shy, burrowing fish best suited to a specialist setup rather than a generic community tank. The single most important requirement is substrate: soft sand or very fine, rounded gravel, deep enough for the fish to dive into and sift through. Coarse or sharp gravel will abrade its slender body and denies it the ability to feed and hide the way it needs to. It should be kept in a group of three to six or more, as with most loaches, and appreciates open sandy areas alongside some cover such as smooth wood or rockwork.

Being near-scaleless, it shares the family's sensitivity to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally; half-doses and gentle products are the safer route if disease treatment becomes necessary, and as with other loaches it can be an early indicator of ich outbreaks in a tank. Match the tropical temperature range of its native rivers — this is not a fish for an unheated or coldwater setup — and provide good water quality and oxygenation reflecting its flowing-river origin. Given its adult size potential (up to around 12 in reported) and burrowing habit, it needs a reasonably large footprint of open sandy floor space rather than a tall or heavily obstructed tank.

Conservation

Acantopsis spectabilis is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient (2022), reflecting how little targeted study this species and its close relatives have received. No specific conservation actions are recorded for it. The species inhabits rivers — the Ayeyarwady, Salween and possibly Chindwin systems have been flagged in this context — that are subject to planned hydropower dam development, a pressure that could affect flow regimes and sediment transport important to a sand-dwelling, burrowing fish, though no population-level impact has been documented to date.

Given the Data Deficient status, claims about population trend or trade impact should be treated cautiously; there is not enough published information to state confidently whether wild collection for the aquarium trade poses a meaningful threat. The precautionary note is simply that a species already flagged as data-poor, occupying rivers slated for damming, is one worth watching rather than assuming is secure.
