Taxonomy & naming
Annamia normani was formally described by the Indian ichthyologist Sunder Lal Hora in 1931, originally placed in the genus Homaloptera, the broad catch-all for hillstream loaches then in use. The parentheses around Hora's name in the current combination signal that transfer. The specific epithet normani honours the British zoologist John Roxborough Norman of the Natural History Museum, London, who worked on the material from what was then French Indochina. The type locality is Kontum, in the central highlands of Annam — the old colonial name for central Vietnam — which gives the fish its most widely used vernacular, the Vietnamese giraffe loach (a name applied to several reticulate-patterned hillstream loaches in the trade).
The species belongs to the family Balitoridae, the hillstream or torrent loaches of South and Southeast Asia. Older references place it in Homaloptera or list the subfamily Balitorinae; the Catalog of Fishes recognises Annamia as a valid genus. The Mekong basin distribution has the fish ranging across Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia; the GBIF backbone records confirm the authority as (Hora, 1931).
Morphology
Annamia normani is small and extremely flat. The body is dorsoventrally compressed to near-disc shape — broadest at the pectoral girdle and tapering sharply toward the tail — and the belly is entirely flat, allowing the fish to press flush against a rock surface. Maximum standard length is around 3–4 in (SL), or roughly 4 in total length; the flattened profile makes it look smaller in the water. The skin is nearly scaleless, giving a smooth, leathery texture, and the colouration is a reticulated pattern of yellow-brown and darker mottling that blends with gravel and biofilm-covered rock — hence the "giraffe" trade name.
The paired pectoral and pelvic fins are enlarged, broad, and held horizontally, acting as hydrofoils that generate downward force in the current, pressing the fish firmly onto the substrate — the evolutionary solution to living in white water. There is no true adhesive disc, but the combined action of the fins and the flat belly provides the same effect. Like other balitorids this species has a suborbital spine, and the thin, near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper-based treatments and to ich in the way that all scaleless loaches are.
Habitat
Annamia normani is a rheophile of the first order. In the wild it inhabits shallow, swift, clear-water rocky riffles and rapids in hill and montane streams of the Mekong basin — Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, with the type locality in the central Vietnamese highlands. The water is cool (SeriouslyFish documents 61–72 °F), well-oxygenated, fast-moving, and running over bedrock, cobble, and boulder substrates that carry a thick coating of cyanobacteria and diatom biofilm. Depth is often just centimetres in the riffles it favours; the current can be powerful enough to throw a hand sideways.
This is not a warm, still-water fish. The cool temperature and extreme dissolved oxygen levels of mountain streams are as important to its survival as the physical current, and both are inseparable from its rheophilic specialisation. The fish is believed to show little tolerance for warm or stagnant conditions, and is not found in lentic or sluggish-current habitats.
Feeding
Annamia normani is primarily a cyanobacterial biofilm grazer. SeriouslyFish records it as a cyanobacteria specialist, with juveniles also consuming organic detritus from the rock surface; loaches.com notes it accepts sinking pellets and small frozen invertebrates (mosquito larvae, brine shrimp, daphnia) in the aquarium. The feeding strategy is the same as most hillstream balitorids: press flat against a substrate surface, rasp off the biofilm mat with the underslung, fleshy-lipped mouth, and move on.
In the aquarium this feeding mode has a critical practical implication: a newly set-up tank with bare rock or freshly cleaned stones provides nothing to graze. The fish will steadily decline and starve before any other symptom becomes obvious. The tank must be mature enough that rocks carry a visible biofilm, and supplemented with blanched greens such as spinach or courgette, algae wafers, and small frozen foods offered directly to the fish rather than scattered for other species to intercept.
Mating
Sexual dimorphism in Annamia normani is not documented to any reliable degree in the literature available. As with many hillstream balitorids, females may be noticeably fuller-bodied when ripe, and some keepers suggest the snout profile differs subtly between sexes, but no confirmed, repeatable external criterion has been published. Conditioning is believed to require a sustained period of high-flow, cool, well-oxygenated water and a rich biofilm diet.
In nature, spawning in hillstream loaches is generally tied to the onset of the rainy season, when water volume, temperature, and flow conditions shift and fresh biofilm growth follows; the fish are presumed to scatter eggs among or under stones in fast riffles. Replicating the seasonal trigger in captivity — the combination of temperature drop, increased flow, altered photoperiod, and chemical change in the water — has not been reliably documented for this species.
Breeding
Annamia normani has not been bred in captivity. Both SeriouslyFish and loaches.com record breeding as unknown in the aquarium, and it is presumed to be a seasonal spawner in nature, with eggs probably scattered over or buried among the cobble and gravel of fast riffles with no parental care. This is the honest position: there are no verified captive spawnings in the sources available.
A small number of hillstream balitorids — Sewellia lineolata being the best-documented example — do spawn in mature, strongly-flowing river-tank setups, and it is possible that sufficiently well-conditioned Annamia in an appropriately designed tank could eventually spawn; but for now that remains speculative. The aquarist should expect this to be a fish to observe and maintain, not to breed. Eggs, if produced, would likely be adhesive or semi-adhesive and deposited among stones with no subsequent parental attention.
In the aquarium
Annamia normani is among the more challenging hillstream loaches to maintain well, and the challenge is almost entirely about flow, oxygen, and food. SeriouslyFish specifies 10–15 times the tank volume per hour in turnover — a figure that requires powerheads or multiple high-flow filters arranged to direct strong, unbroken current across a rock surface, not merely circulate water. The temperature should be kept at the cool end of tropical, 61–72 °F per SeriouslyFish; the loaches.com community has observed fish kept somewhat warmer (70–77 °F), but the fish's natural range is montane and cool, and warmer temperatures accelerate oxygen depletion at the fish's expense. pH tolerance is 6.0–7.5.
The rockscape must be mature — covered with a visible growth of cyanobacteria and diatom biofilm — before the fish is introduced, and supplementary feeding with algae wafers, blanched greens, and small frozen invertebrates is essential. A newly set-up tank, however beautiful its stonework, will starve this fish in weeks. The near-scaleless skin means copper-based medications should be avoided or used at half-dose; like many scaleless hillstream loaches it is susceptible to external parasites and responds poorly to standard treatments at full strength. Water quality must be high — a hillstream fish with a biofilm diet in clean current is unforgiving of accumulated nitrates or reduced oxygen.
Because it occupies a very specific niche — pressed flat on high-flow rock surfaces — it coexists well with mid-water or upper-water community fish that do not compete for the same space, and reasonably well with other hillstream species of similar size. It is not an especially social loach in the botiid sense, but a small group of three or more tends to be more active and less shy than a singleton.
Conservation
Annamia normani is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessment published February 2011). The species has a reasonably broad distribution across the Mekong basin — Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia — and is not considered to face immediate range-wide threat. It appears in the aquarium trade under its several vernacular names, with trade fish almost certainly wild-collected from hill streams rather than captive-bred, given that captive breeding has not been achieved.
The longer-term concern for rheophilic hillstream loaches across Indochina is habitat quality: damming and flow regulation of Mekong tributaries, sedimentation from deforestation and agriculture, and water pollution all degrade the fast, clear, rocky-riffle environments on which species like Annamia normani depend. These threats are not specific to this species but apply broadly to the region's hillstream fauna, and a species restricted to montane riffles has limited ability to colonise altered or degraded reaches.
