Taxonomy & naming
Nemacheilus longistriatus was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 1990 and has kept its original combination ever since — it has not been swept up in the wave of re-splitting that has moved many of its relatives into genera such as Schistura, Physoschistura or Petruichthys. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest family of loaches and one of the largest families of freshwater fish, with well over 700 described species spread across Eurasia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the standing authority for the valid name and combination used here.
Within the trade the species is sold under a mix of scientific and vernacular names — Laos blackline torpedo loach or black-line torpedo loach — names that reference both its country of origin in commerce and its slim, streamlined body shape. As with many small nemacheilids collected in modest numbers from a wide river system, taxonomic revision of the genus is ongoing, and future work may eventually reassign the species; for now it remains Nemacheilus longistriatus.
Morphology
This is a small, elongate, torpedo-shaped loach, cylindrical through the body and only mildly compressed toward the tail, built for holding position and darting through fast water. Fish in the hobby typically run 2.5–3 in, though older references cite a maximum closer to 5 in SL; current field and aquarium observations suggest the smaller figure is the realistic size for most individuals encountered. The pattern is distinctive: a series of 9–13 dark saddles crosses the back, 9–11 roundish blotches run along the flanks, and a dark longitudinal stripe — often merging with those lateral blotches — runs the length of the body to end in a black spot at the base of the caudal fin, the feature behind its "blackline" trade name.
As in other nemacheilids the mouth is small and underslung, fringed with barbels for feeling out food on the riverbed, and the skin carries the family's characteristically small, deeply embedded scales rather than a heavy armour of plates. Many stone loaches in this family also carry a small erectile suborbital spine used in the same defensive/anchoring role seen across Cobitoidea; near-scaleless skin of this kind makes the group broadly sensitive to medication, a point worth keeping in mind when treating this species.
Habitat
Nemacheilus longistriatus is native to the middle Mekong basin, documented from Thailand (Chiang Mai and Loei provinces), Laos (the Khorat Plateau area, including waters below the Khone Phapheng falls) and Cambodia (the Tonle Sap system). It occupies both the main river channel and its backwaters, over substrates of bedrock and sand, and may move into seasonally flooded areas as water levels rise.
The water it lives in is clear, cool-to-mild and fast-flowing, with pH in the weakly acidic to neutral range (roughly 6.5–7.5) and moderate general hardness. This is a fish of highly oxygenated, moving water rather than still or blackwater habitat — flow and dissolved oxygen are as important to its wellbeing as any single chemistry parameter, and a tank that mimics a riffle or run, not a lagoon, best matches where this species actually lives.
Feeding
In the wild this is an omnivorous micro-predator, picking small insects and their larvae, worms, small crustaceans and zooplankton from the substrate and drift of its home streams. It forages actively over stone and sand, using its barbelled mouth to locate prey by touch and scent rather than sight alone.
In the aquarium it does best on a diet built around small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, Daphnia and brine shrimp are all readily taken — offered daily for the best colour and condition. Flake is often ignored or taken only reluctantly, so keepers should plan on sinking, meaty foods rather than relying on flake as a staple.
Mating
Nothing has been published on courtship or spawning behaviour in Nemacheilus longistriatus, in the wild or in captivity; reproduction in this species is unrecorded in the scientific literature. What can reasonably be inferred comes from its close relatives and its own ecology: as a fast-water stream loach with no evidence of nest-building, cave use or male guarding, any spawning would be expected to follow the general nemacheilid pattern of unpaired, current-triggered egg release rather than a formed pair bond or courtship display. This is inference from family-level pattern, not a documented account for this species.
Breeding
As with the great majority of stone and brook loaches, Nemacheilus longistriatus is essentially unbred in the home aquarium, and there is no confirmed spawning record for the species at all — wild or captive. The most likely mode, inferred from its habitat and from breeding accounts of related nemacheilids, is egg-scattering over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care given to eggs or fry once released.
Data on this species' reproduction is genuinely sparse, and that should be stated plainly rather than papered over: no aquarium hobbyist reports of successful spawning are on record, and the trade supply of this species is understood to be wild-collected rather than farm-bred. Anyone keeping a group should not expect to breed it, and any observed spawning behaviour would be a notable, worth-documenting event.
In the aquarium
Nemacheilus longistriatus is a peaceful, obligate-social fish that should be kept in groups of four or more; alone or in pairs it is markedly more nervous and reclusive. Give it a tank with strong water movement — several times tank volume per hour — and high oxygenation, since this is a species built for riffles and runs, not still water. A substrate of smooth stones and sand, kept scrupulously clean, reflects its natural bedrock-and-sand habitat, and a tank in the range of 40 US gal upward suits a proper-sized group comfortably.
Because it belongs to a family with generally small, deeply embedded scales, it should be treated with the same caution given to other near-scaleless loaches when medicating: use gentler treatments and watch for early stress signs rather than dosing at full aquarium-wide strength without care. Feed it a varied diet of small live and frozen foods rather than relying on flake, keep temperature and flow in line with its cool, fast-water Mekong origins, and it makes an active, engaging, if still under-documented, addition to a flowing-water Southeast Asian community.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Nemacheilus longistriatus as Least Concern, reflecting its relatively wide distribution across the middle Mekong basin spanning Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. The species has not been flagged with any specific population decline in available assessments.
As with many small Mekong-basin fishes, the longer-term pressures worth watching are basin-wide rather than specific to this species — damming, altered flow regimes and habitat modification across the Mekong mainstem and its tributaries affect the whole assemblage of small stream and backwater fishes it belongs to. The aquarium trade in this species draws on wild-collected fish rather than farmed stock, which is worth keeping in mind when sourcing it, though there is no documented evidence that trade collection alone threatens the species at present.
