Taxonomy & naming
Nemacheilus pallidus was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 1990. It sits in the genus Nemacheilus, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, with well over 700 described species spread across Eurasia. FishBase lists no synonyms for this species, and the Catalog of Fishes treats Nemacheilus pallidus as the current valid combination, so unlike many nemacheilids that have been shuffled between Nemacheilus, Noemacheilus, Schistura and other genera over the decades, this name has been stable since its description.
The genus name Nemacheilus is built from Greek nema, "thread" or "filament," and cheilos, "lip" — a reference to the small barbels around the mouth typical of the group. The species epithet pallidus is Latin for "pale" or "pallid," describing the fish's washed-out, light background colouration compared to more boldly marked relatives.
Morphology
This is a small, slender, cylindrical loach typical of the Nemacheilidae — a torpedo-shaped body built for holding position against current on the streambed rather than for open swimming. FishBase records a maximum standard length of about 5.5 in, though Seriously Fish gives observed aquarium sizes closer to 2–2.5 in SL, suggesting most individuals seen in the trade and in the field are considerably smaller than the recorded maximum. The body carries 13 to 16 narrow, pale saddle-like bars along the back, which give the species its understated, mottled appearance rather than the bold banding seen in some showier loaches.
As a nemacheilid, Nemacheilus pallidus lacks the erectile suborbital spine that defines the botiid loaches; instead it has the family's characteristic small mouth barbels and reduced, embedded scales, leaving the skin close to naked — a trait shared across nearly all true loaches and one that matters for how the fish should be handled and medicated in captivity.
Habitat
The species is native to mainland Southeast Asia, recorded from the Mekong basin (spanning Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam), the Chao Phraya and Mae Klong river systems of Thailand, and the Dong Nai drainage. Its type locality is given as Huai Mae Phlung, a stream near Ban Pong in the Mae Nam Yom basin, Lampang Province, Thailand. Across this range it inhabits shallow stretches of small streams and rivers, favouring sandy to muddy bottoms with variable current, and clear-to-turbid water rather than the fast, boulder-strewn torrents preferred by hillstream loaches.
Water conditions reported for the species are moderate rather than extreme: Seriously Fish records a temperature range of 73–79 °F and pH 6.0–7.5, while Loaches Online gives a slightly wider and cooler 64–77 °F with the same pH band and soft-to-medium hardness. This places Nemacheilus pallidus in the cool-to-warm, well-oxygenated flowing water typical of lowland and foothill Southeast Asian streams — not a still, warm blackwater fish, and not a cold high-altitude specialist either.
Feeding
Nemacheilus pallidus is an omnivorous micro-predator, foraging over the streambed for small insects, worms, crustaceans and zooplankton. This diet places it firmly among the invertebrate-hunting loaches rather than the algae-grazing hillstream specialists, and it explains why the species does poorly on a diet of flake alone.
In the aquarium it takes sinking pellets and prepared bottom foods, but does best with a regular supply of live or frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp (Artemia) and Daphnia are all reported as reliably accepted and are closer to its natural diet than dried foods, which it may largely ignore.
Mating
No sexual dimorphism has been documented for this species in the sources available, and no courtship or spawning behaviour has been recorded in the wild or in captivity. As with the great majority of small nemacheilid stone loaches, the reproductive biology of Nemacheilus pallidus is essentially undescribed — a reminder that most of the world's 700-plus brook loach species are known mainly from museum specimens and brief survey records rather than close observation.
Breeding
Breeding has not been recorded for Nemacheilus pallidus in the scientific literature or in the aquarium hobby. Based on what is known of the genus and the wider Nemacheilidae, the species is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel or sand in flowing water with no parental care, but this has not been directly observed for this fish. It should be treated as effectively unbred in captivity — a species kept for its quiet, hardy presence on the substrate rather than as a breeding project.
In the aquarium
Nemacheilus pallidus is described as a peaceable, calm loach that should be kept in a group of at least three. It is not a large or demanding fish by loach standards, but it does need moving, well-oxygenated water and a sand substrate to be comfortable — smooth pebbles and pieces of bogwood make good shelter, and Loaches Online notes it appreciates reasonably bright lighting rather than the deep shade some other loaches prefer. Water should be kept soft to medium-hard (to about 12 dH) and mildly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.5), with temperature held in the 64–79 °F range reported across sources.
Being a nemacheilid, it has the family's typically reduced scalation, so the same caution applies as with other scaleless loaches: use medications carefully and at reduced strength where possible, since these fish absorb treatments readily. The species is not common in the aquarium trade, so keepers who do find it should expect a modest-sized, low-key bottom-dweller rather than a striking display fish.
Conservation
Nemacheilus pallidus is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, reflecting its relatively wide distribution across the lower Mekong basin and the Chao Phraya and Mae Klong systems of Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. No major population declines or specific threats are documented for the species in the sources reviewed here.
As with many small, non-showy stream fish across Southeast Asia, the chief long-term risks are likely to be generic ones — habitat alteration, damming and water-quality pressure on the region's river systems — rather than any pressure from the aquarium trade, in which this species barely feature.
