Taxonomy & naming
Barbatula bergamensis was described in 2007 by Fahrettin Erk'akan, Bayram Nalbant and Ünal Özeren, published in the Journal of Fish International alongside six other new Barbatula species and additional new Schistura and Seminemacheilus material from Turkey — part of a wave of Anatolian stone-loach taxonomy that untangled a long-confused group of small, similar-looking brook fish. It sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, the largest family of true loaches and one still being actively revised as researchers work through Turkey's many isolated drainage basins.
The genus Barbatula itself has a tangled recent history: many species once lumped into the old, broad genera Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus have since been redistributed among Barbatula, Oxynoemacheilus, Schistura, Paracobitis and others as regional revisions proceeded. Barbatula bergamensis has been treated under this combination since its description and is listed as a valid species in aggregator databases such as GBIF; there is no indication in the available sources that it has since been moved to another genus.
Morphology
As a member of Nemacheilidae, Barbatula bergamensis shares the family's general build: a small, slender, cylindrical-to-slightly-compressed body, a flattened head and underslung mouth ringed with barbels for probing the substrate, and — where present in the genus — the erectile suborbital spine typical of many loaches, used defensively and in territorial disputes. Its skin, like that of stone loaches generally, is fine-scaled to effectively naked, which leaves it sensitive to harsh water conditions and medications rather than a fish that tolerates rough handling.
Beyond the diagnostic characters used to separate it from its six sibling species in the 2007 description, detailed morphological data for Barbatula bergamensis is sparse in publicly available sources. It should be treated as a small, unremarkable-looking brook loach in the mould of its many Anatolian and European relatives rather than a boldly patterned or distinctively marked species.
Habitat
Barbatula bergamensis was described from streams in a western Anatolian drainage basin in Turkey, part of the same wave of localized endemics that produced its six sibling species. Like other Barbatula and Nemacheilidae generally, it is expected to inhabit cool, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated stream water over stone, gravel and sand — the classic stone-loach habitat, quite unlike the warm, still, tannin-stained water associated with many tropical aquarium fish.
As with much of the description, detailed habitat data beyond the type locality is not documented in the sources available here. Many Anatolian stone loaches like this one are known from a single stream system or a handful of nearby drainages, and their populations and precise range have not been mapped in the kind of detail available for better-studied European or East Asian species.
Feeding

Barbatula bergamensis is not established in the aquarium trade and there is no meaningful care history to draw on. Should specimens ever become available, the sensible starting point — following the well-documented needs of its close relatives among the stone and brook loaches — would be a cool-to-temperate, well-oxygenated, flowing setup over a fine gravel or sand substrate, not a warm, still community tank. Its near-scaleless skin, typical of the family, means any medication should be dosed cautiously.
Given how little is documented about this species specifically, anyone encountering it should treat it as a scientifically interesting but essentially unkept fish, and should not assume detailed aquarium husbandry guidance exists for it beyond the general principles that apply to Nemacheilidae as a family.
