Barbatula cobdonensis was described in 1973 by the ichthyologist A. Gundriser as Nemacheilus cobdonensis, reflecting the broad, now-outdated genus Nemacheilus that once absorbed most Eurasian stone loaches. Subsequent revision of the family split that catch-all genus apart, and the species was reassigned to Barbatula, the genus that now holds the European stone loach and its close Central Asian relatives. The species belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, comprising hundreds of small, drab, fast-water species spread across Eurasia.
