Barbatula dgebuadzei, the Gobi loach, is a small, near-scaleless stone loach known only from the Gobi Lakes Valley of Mongolia. Described in 2003 from material collected in the arid interior of Central Asia, it is one of the more obscure members of the stone-and-brook-loach family Nemacheilidae — a fish few outside a handful of ichthyologists have ever seen alive. It carries the family's telltale near-naked skin and an indented upper lip, but almost nothing else about its life history has been documented. Mongolia's own Red List treats it as Endangered, tied to a single vulnerable locality threatened by mining, while the global IUCN Red List has never evaluated it at all — a fitting emblem for a genuinely data-sparse species.

Taxonomy & naming

Barbatula dgebuadzei was formally described by Alexander M. Prokofiev in 2003, in a paper revising the stone loaches (then treated under Balitoridae: Nemacheilinae, in the genus Orthrias) of Mongolia and adjacent Central Asia, published in the Journal of Ichthyology. The species has since been shuffled between Nemacheilus and Barbatula in different regional treatments — a common fate for Central Asian stone loaches, whose generic boundaries have been repeatedly revised as the old wastebasket genus Noemacheilus was broken apart. The Catalog of Fishes currently places it in Barbatula, the genus that also holds the European stone loach, B. barbatula, and it sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the largest of the loach families.

The species epithet honours Yuri Yulianovich Dgebuadze, a Russian Academy of Sciences ichthyologist who collected the holotype. Because it was described only in 2003 from a remote part of Mongolia, it has attracted very little subsequent research, and even basic aspects of its biology remain unpublished.

Morphology

Like other members of Nemacheilidae, Barbatula dgebuadzei is a small, elongate, bottom-dwelling loach. It is distinguished from its relatives chiefly by a marked median indentation in the upper lip and by widely separated nostrils, along with a vertebral count of 43–45. The body is nearly scaleless, with scales present only around the base of the caudal fin — a hallmark of the genus that leaves the skin effectively naked and, as in other loaches, makes the fish more porous to dissolved chemicals and medications than a scaled fish.

Beyond these diagnostic details, no comprehensive size or colour description has circulated outside the technical literature, and no photographs of live specimens are readily available. As with many recently described Central Asian stone loaches, published morphological data remain limited to the original taxonomic description.

Habitat

The Gobi loach is endemic to the Gobi Lakes Valley in Mongolia, an interior drainage basin in the arid Gobi region of Central Asia. It is known from a single documented locality, a status that immediately marks it as an at-risk endemic — a fish with nowhere else to go if its one home stream or lake system is degraded.

No detailed habitat description (substrate, flow regime, vegetation) has been published for this species specifically. Its close relative, the European stone loach Barbatula barbatula, is a cool, fast-flowing-stream specialist, and Central Asian nemacheilids as a group are typically found in cool, clear, well-oxygenated water — but applying that pattern to B. dgebuadzei by extension rather than direct observation would be a guess, so it should be read as context, not fact.

Feeding

No feeding data specific to Barbatula dgebuadzei have been documented. Stone and brook loaches in Nemacheilidae are, as a family, bold benthic micro-predators — foraging over gravel and stone substrates for small invertebrates, insect larvae and crustaceans in fast, clear water. It is reasonable to expect the Gobi loach follows this general family pattern, but no study has confirmed its actual diet in the wild, and nothing is known of how, or whether, it has ever been fed in captivity.

Mating

Nothing has been published on courtship, sexual dimorphism, or spawning behaviour in Barbatula dgebuadzei. No aquarium or field observations of pairing or spawning are known to exist for this species.

Breeding

There is no documented breeding record for Barbatula dgebuadzei, in the wild or in captivity — it does not appear to be kept or bred in the aquarium hobby at all. Stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae) as a family are typically egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over gravel and among stones in flowing water with no parental care, and are rarely bred even when they are held in aquaria. Given the complete absence of species-specific data, the honest summary here is that breeding biology for this species is unknown; assume the family pattern of unattended egg-scattering applies until a direct observation says otherwise.

In the aquarium

Barbatula dgebuadzei is not established, and does not appear to be present at all, in the aquarium hobby. It is a scientifically described but essentially unseen fish outside its native Mongolian valley, with no husbandry record, no reported temperature or water-chemistry parameters from keepers, and no photographs of tank specimens to draw on. Anyone encountering it would be working from the general, cautious template for small Nemacheilidae — cool, clean, well-oxygenated, flowing water and a fine, soft substrate, with the usual caution that near-scaleless loaches are sensitive to copper and full-strength medication — rather than from any specific data for this species.

Conservation

Barbatula dgebuadzei has not been assessed by the global IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. Mongolia's own national Red List, however, assesses it as Endangered under criterion B2ab(iii), reflecting a species known from a single location whose extent and quality of habitat are in decline. The principal threat identified is mining and associated industrial activity in the Gobi Lakes Valley, the fish's only known home.

As a single-locality endemic in an arid, resource-extraction-pressured landscape, the Gobi loach is a textbook case for why baseline survey and monitoring work is a conservation priority in its own right — without it, a species can decline or disappear with almost no one noticing. There is no evidence of any aquarium trade in this species, so trade pressure is not a documented factor; the risk here is purely habitat-driven.
