Barbatula emuensis is a small stone loach described in 2019 from a single river system in north-eastern China, one of a cluster of Barbatula species split apart from older, broader concepts of the genus in that revision. Like its relatives it is a slim, bottom-hugging fish of cool, clear, fast-flowing streams, built to hold position on gravel and stone in current rather than to swim in open water. It has never entered the aquarium trade in any documented way and almost nothing has been published on its ecology beyond the description itself — this is a genuinely data-sparse species, and the honest picture is a fish known mainly from its type locality rather than a well-studied one.

Taxonomy & naming

Barbatula emuensis was described in 2019 by Chen, Zhang, Chen and Freyhof as part of a broader review of Barbatula loaches from north-eastern China, published in the journal Zootaxa. The type locality is Emu City in Jilin Province, China, which supplies the species epithet. The description places it within the Heilongjiang (Amur) and Yalu River drainages of the region.

The genus Barbatula belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches, the largest family of true loaches and a group that has been extensively reshuffled in recent decades as old, catch-all genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split into narrower, better-defined genera including Barbatula, Schistura, Triplophysa and Oxynoemacheilus. B. emuensis is one of several species distinguished in the 2019 revision from superficially similar north-east Asian Barbatula on the basis of fine anatomical detail. The Catalog of Fishes is the standing authority for the valid name; no synonymy or later revision affecting this species is reflected in the available sources, so the genus placement here follows the original description.

Morphology

The original description characterises Barbatula emuensis by a set of fine anatomical features that separate it from its closest relatives: closely set nostrils, a deep median incision in the upper lip, and a lower lip that lacks lateral expansion. Scalation on the back and flanks is sparse anterior to the origin of the dorsal fin and becomes denser behind it — a detail used to distinguish it from congeners in the same revision.
