Barbatula gibba was described in 2012 by Cao, Causse and Zhang as part of a broader revision of northern Asian Barbatula, a paper that untangled several similar-looking stone loaches from Inner Mongolia and adjacent China. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, made up mostly of small, clear-stream benthic species that are easy to overlook and, in many cases, still poorly known even to specialists.
The species epithet gibba comes from the Latin gibbus, meaning humped or humpbacked, referring to the fish's distinctively convex predorsal profile. The describers separated it from other northern Asian Barbatula by that near-columnar anterior body shape together with the greatly convex profile in front of the dorsal fin; it is also similar to the scaleless-predorsal Barbatula nuda but differs in having more widely separated nostrils and a shallower indentation in the middle of the lower lip. As with much of this genus, older literature and regional keys sometimes used the broader Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus for similar fish before the modern Barbatula/Schistura/Triplophysa split settled out; the Catalog of Fishes currently places this species in Barbatula, and that combination is used here.
Morphology
Barbatula gibba is a small loach, reported to reach only about 3 in in standard length, consistent with most of its genus. Like other stone loaches it has an elongate, only mildly compressed body, a blunt head with barbels around the mouth, and the near-scaleless skin typical of Nemacheilidae — a trait that leaves these fish sensitive to poor water quality and to full-strength medications.
The defining feature named in its description is the body shape itself: a nearly columnar (straight-sided) anterior body combined with a strongly convex, humped profile running up to the dorsal fin, more pronounced than in its closest relatives. It is distinguished from the similarly scaleless-backed Barbatula nuda by more widely spaced nostrils and a shallower median notch in the lower lip. Habitat
