Barbatula karabanowi is a small stone loach known only from the upper headwaters of the Bulgan River in western Mongolia, described by Alexander Prokofiev in 2018. It is a genuine highland-stream endemic: a slim, near-scaleless bottom-dweller with irregular dark blotches and streaks along the flank, living alongside a close relative, B. cf. altayensis, in the same cold, fast water while apparently avoiding direct competition by taking different prey. Nothing about this fish points to the aquarium trade — it has no common name in general use, no assessed conservation status, and almost certainly no captive history at all. It is included here as an honest example of how large a share of the stone-loach fauna remains, essentially, a name on a map.

Taxonomy & naming

Barbatula karabanowi was described by Alexander M. Prokofiev in 2018 in the journal Zootaxa, from material collected in the upper Bulgan River drainage of western Mongolia. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest family of loaches, comprising small, mostly benthic fishes spread across Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Within that family it sits in Barbatula, a genus of cold-water stream loaches historically centred on Europe and western Asia but here extended to a Mongolian headwater population.

The species epithet honours Dmitry P. Karabanow, a hydrobiologist at the Russian Academy of Sciences. Prokofiev's description distinguishes B. karabanowi from the geographically close B. dsapchynensis, described from the neighbouring Zavhan River drainage, chiefly on its irregular blotch-and-streak flank pattern. As with much of the Nemacheilidae, generic placement in this part of Central Asia has shifted repeatedly as older, broad genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus have been split into Barbatula, Triplophysa, Schistura and others; this article follows the original combination in Barbatula.

Morphology

Barbatula karabanowi is a small, slender stone loach with the characteristic Nemacheilidae body plan: a rounded, only lightly compressed trunk, a blunt, broad snout, and smooth (non-fringed) lips. Prokofiev's description records 42–44 vertebrae, typically 43, and 75–88 pored lateral-line scales, along with widely spaced nostrils. Scales on the flanks are few or absent, leaving much of the skin effectively naked — a trait shared across the family and one with real consequences for how the fish tolerates medication in captivity.

Colouration is an irregular pattern of dark blotches and streaks scattered over the flank, rather than the crisp, regular banding seen in some related species; this pattern was one of the features Prokofiev used to separate it from its nearest neighbour, B. dsapchynensis. As in other nemacheilids, a pair of sensory barbels around the mouth helps the fish detect invertebrate prey by touch and taste on the streambed. No maximum length is recorded in the available literature for this species; stone loaches in this genus are generally modest in size, typically well under 4 in.

Habitat

The species is known only from the upper headwaters of the Bulgan River in western Mongolia — cold, clear, fast-flowing mountain-stream water typical of the region's high-altitude drainages. This is classic Barbatula habitat: well-oxygenated water running over gravel and stone substrate, far removed in character from the warm, slow, often stained waters favoured by many lowland tropical loaches.

Notably, B. karabanowi occurs in syntopy with B. cf. altayensis — the two species share the same stretch of river. Prokofiev's description notes that they appear to partition food resources between them, taking different invertebrate prey rather than competing directly for the same items. Beyond the type locality and its immediate vicinity, nothing further has been published on the species' distribution; it may be restricted to this single headwater system or simply remain unsurveyed elsewhere in the drainage.

Feeding

As a nemacheilid stone loach, B. karabanowi is almost certainly a benthic micro-predator, using its barbels to locate small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and other stream-bottom prey — among the gravel and stones of its cold, fast-flowing home water. The original description's note that it partitions food resources with the co-occurring B. cf. altayensis implies a somewhat specialised diet, though the exact prey items taken by each species were not itemised in the available summary.

No aquarium feeding data exists for this species, since it has no documented history in the hobby. Based on the diet of related Barbatula and other stone loaches, a captive individual would be expected to take small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp readily, and to be a slow, inconsistent feeder on dry flake.

Mating

Nothing has been published on courtship or spawning behaviour in Barbatula karabanowi specifically. No external sexual dimorphism is documented for the species in the available literature. In the genus more broadly, stone loaches show little conspicuous dimorphism outside the breeding season, and spawning in cold, fast headwater streams is generally tied to seasonal temperature and flow cues rather than to any elaborate courtship display — but none of this has been confirmed for this species, and it would be guesswork to describe it further.

Breeding

There is no record of Barbatula karabanowi being bred in captivity, and — as an obscure, recently described endemic of a remote Mongolian headwater with no aquarium trade presence — this is unsurprising. Stone and brook loaches in general are egg-scatterers: ripe adults release eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry. There is no reason to expect B. karabanowi to differ from this pattern, but the specifics — clutch size, spawning temperature, incubation time — are simply unknown for this species.

Data on this fish is genuinely sparse. It is best treated as a wild population known from a single scientific description rather than as a species with any breeding record, aquarium or otherwise.

In the aquarium

Barbatula karabanowi has no known aquarium history. It has not been reported in the ornamental trade, has no established common name, and was described from a remote headwater stream with no indication of commercial collection. This article covers it for completeness and honesty about the sheer size of the undocumented stone-loach fauna, not as a care profile.

Were it ever to appear in captivity, everything about its known biology points to a small, cold-to-cool, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated setup with a gravel or stone substrate — the standard requirements of Barbatula and other temperate stream loaches — and to the same caution that applies across the family: nemacheilids are largely scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper-based and full-strength medications. None of this is tested for this specific species; it is inference from its genus and family, not a verified care record.

Conservation

Barbatula karabanowi has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. This is unsurprising for a species described only in 2018 from a single remote drainage: formal conservation assessment has simply not caught up with the description.

As a narrow-range endemic known only from the upper Bulgan River headwaters in western Mongolia, the species is, by the nature of its distribution, potentially vulnerable to any localised habitat change — water extraction, mining, grazing pressure or climate-driven shifts in headwater flow are all plausible generic threats to small Central Asian mountain-stream endemics, though none has been specifically documented for this species. There is no evidence of any aquarium trade pressure. Given the total absence of population or trend data, no meaningful conservation status beyond Not Evaluated can honestly be assigned.
