Barbatula linjiangensis is a small stone loach described in 2019 from the Yalu River near Linjiang City in Jilin Province, northeastern China, on the border with North Korea. Like most members of Nemacheilidae — the largest loach family, and the one that gives "stone loach" and "brook loach" their name — it is a slim, bottom-hugging micro-predator built for cool, fast, clear water, and it is one of the many recently described nemacheilids about which very little beyond the original description has been published. Its type locality is its whole story so far: a single named river system, a formal Latin diagnosis, and not much else.

Taxonomy & naming

Barbatula linjiangensis was formally described in 2019 by Chen, Zhang, Chen and Freyhof in the journal Zootaxa, as part of a taxonomic revision of stone loaches from northeastern China and the Korean Peninsula. It belongs to the genus Barbatula, one of many genera carved out of the old, over-broad "Nemacheilus"/"Noemacheilus" catch-all as the family Nemacheilidae has been progressively reorganised over the past few decades; Barbatula in its modern sense covers stone loaches native to western Eurasia through to the Russian Far East and northeastern China. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the currently valid combination, Barbatula linjiangensis.

The species epithet linjiangensis refers to its type locality, Linjiang City on the Yalu River — the river that forms much of the border between China and North Korea. As with many recently described nemacheilids, it is known essentially only from its original description; no synonyms or historical name changes apply to it, since it has always carried this combination since 2019.

Morphology

Barbatula linjiangensis is a small, elongate stone loach, reaching a modest maximum length of about 3.5 in standard length. The original description notes a set of fine anatomical details used to separate it from its close relatives: closely set nostrils, a shallow median incision in the upper lip, and a lower lip without lateral expansion. Its scalation is distinctive for the group — scales are sparsely set on the back and flanks in front of the dorsal-fin origin, becoming densely set behind it.

Like other members of Nemacheilidae, it almost certainly carries the family's characteristic near-scaleless, soft skin and lacks the erectile suborbital spine found in the botiid loaches — that spine is a Botiidae feature, not a nemacheilid one. Beyond the diagnostic characters used to distinguish it from related species, detailed morphological and ecological data for this species have not been published; much of what would normally round out a morphology account — colour pattern in life, fin ray counts beyond the type description, sexual size differences — remains undocumented.

Habitat

The species is known from the Yalu River drainage near Linjiang City, Jilin Province, in northeastern China, with its range extending into North Korea. This is a temperate river system in a region with cold winters and warm summers, and stone loaches in this part of Eurasia typically occupy clear, flowing, well-oxygenated streams and river margins over gravel, sand or stone substrate — the kind of habitat that gives Nemacheilidae its common names of "stone" and "brook" loaches.

No published temperature, pH or detailed habitat data are available for Barbatula linjiangensis specifically. Given its temperate northeastern-Asian range, it should be treated as a cool-water to cool-temperate species rather than a warm tropical one, but precise figures are not documented and should not be guessed at.

Feeding

No diet data have been published for this species. As a nemacheilid stone loach, it almost certainly follows the pattern typical of the family: a benthic micro-predator that forages over the streambed for small invertebrates such as insect larvae and tiny crustaceans in fast, clear water. This inference is drawn from the family's general biology rather than from any direct observation of Barbatula linjiangensis, and should be read as an educated expectation, not a documented fact.

Mating

Nothing has been published on courtship, spawning behaviour or sexual dimorphism in Barbatula linjiangensis. The original 2019 description is a morphological diagnosis distinguishing it from related stone loaches; it does not report reproductive observations. Data on this species' mating biology are simply not available.

Breeding

There is no record of Barbatula linjiangensis being bred in the aquarium, and no field data on its reproduction have been published. Stone and brook loaches in Nemacheilidae, as a family, are typically egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward — and this species should be assumed to follow that general pattern rather than anything resembling a cave-guarding or mouthbrooding strategy, both of which belong to entirely different fish groups. In practice, this is a species that is rarely if ever seen in the hobby, let alone bred in captivity; the honest state of knowledge is that its breeding biology is undocumented.

In the aquarium

Barbatula linjiangensis is not established in the aquarium trade and there are no husbandry records to draw on. Its modest size — around 3.5 in — and its likely preference for cool, clean, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water in line with its temperate northeastern-China origin suggest it would need a river-style setup with strong flow and high dissolved oxygen rather than a warm, still community tank, but this is an inference from its relatives and range rather than confirmed care data.

As with most nemacheilid loaches, it should be assumed to have thin, near-scaleless skin typical of the family, meaning any future keeper should treat medications cautiously and avoid copper-based treatments and full-strength doses. Because this species is essentially unknown outside its original taxonomic description, none of this should be taken as tested guidance — it is a placeholder drawn from family-level biology until real husbandry observations exist.

Conservation

Barbatula linjiangensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. This is unsurprising for a species described as recently as 2019 from a narrow river-system range spanning the China–North Korea border, a combination that often leaves species without a formal conservation assessment for years. There is no evidence of any aquarium trade in this species, wild-collected or otherwise, and no documented conservation pressures specific to it beyond the general risks facing small-range stream endemics in the region.
