Taxonomy & naming
Barbatula nuda was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1864. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest of the true-loach families and one that has been extensively reshuffled as older catch-all genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart into Barbatula, Schistura, Triplophysa, Oxynoemacheilus and others. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists Barbatula nuda as the currently valid combination, with its type locality in the Chongli county area of Hebei, China.
A 2012 revision published in Zootaxa showed that the name B. nuda had historically covered more than one species. Working through northern Chinese material, the authors resolved three distinct stone loaches: B. nuda sensu stricto, the more widely distributed B. toni across the Liao-He and Tumen-Jiang basins, and a newly described species, B. gibba, endemic to Dali-Nur Lake in Inner Mongolia. The three are distinguished chiefly by predorsal body shape. B. nuda in the narrow, currently valid sense is now understood to be restricted to the Liao and Taizi river drainages of Liaoning Province and adjacent northern Korea — a much tighter range than older, broader usage of the name implied.
Morphology
Barbatula nuda is a small, elongate benthic loach, built low and slender for life pressed against the streambed. Like other nemacheilids it has a near-scaleless or very finely scaled body, a trait that matters for how it should be handled and medicated in captivity. Detailed size and colour-pattern data for this narrowly-redefined species are sparse in the literature available here; genomic work on a specimen from the Taizi River at Liaoyang City confirms it as a small benthic freshwater loach typical of the genus.
The genus Barbatula as a whole ranges from Spain in the west to Korea and Japan in the east, and its members share the general nemacheilid body plan: barbels around the mouth for feeling out food on the substrate, and — in many genera within the broader loach group — an erectile suborbital spine, though this feature is most pronounced in the botiid loaches rather than the slimmer-bodied stone loaches. Precise meristic and coloration detail specific to B. nuda sensu stricto is not well documented in accessible sources, and is best treated as data-sparse rather than guessed at.
Habitat
This species is native to cool, flowing freshwater streams and rivers in the Liao and Taizi river drainages of Liaoning Province in northern China, extending into northern Korea. These are temperate East Asian river systems, a long way climatically from the warm tropical rivers that many aquarium loaches come from — winters are cold and summers moderate, and the water this fish lives in is clear, fast-moving and well-oxygenated over a stony or gravel bed.
As a nemacheilid stone loach, Barbatula nuda is adapted to benthic life in current: holding position on or near the bottom, using the flow rather than fighting it, and depending on consistently high dissolved oxygen. It is not a still-water or blackwater species, and nothing in the available record suggests it tolerates warm, stagnant conditions well.
Feeding
Barbatula nuda is best understood as a small benthic micro-predator, in keeping with its family. Stone and brook loaches typically forage over the substrate of fast, clear streams for small invertebrates — insect larvae and small crustaceans — picked out from among gravel and stones. Specific dietary study of B. nuda itself was not found in the sources consulted here, so this description follows the well-documented pattern of its genus and family rather than species-specific data.
Its congener Barbatula barbatula, the well-studied European stone loach, takes sinking pellets, flake, and frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia in captivity, and readily forages through substrate for scraps. A similar diet — small sinking foods offered at the bottom, with some live or frozen invertebrate matter — is the reasonable expectation for B. nuda, though this is inference from the genus rather than a documented record for the species.

In its congener B. barbatula, spawning in captivity is documented but described as rare, even though the fish is a familiar and widely kept European species. Extrapolating cautiously, home breeding of B. nuda should be assumed to be rare to essentially unattempted; nothing in the available record suggests otherwise, and this is not a species to expect to spawn on purpose in a home tank.
In the aquarium
Barbatula nuda is not an established aquarium fish — it does not appear to be a regular presence in the trade, and species-specific keeping advice was not found in the sources consulted. What can be said comes from the shared traits of Nemacheilidae and from the well-documented care of the genus's most familiar member, B. barbatula: a stone loach of this kind wants clean, cool-to-temperate, well-oxygenated water with meaningful flow, a sand or gravel substrate it can forage through, and a tank of at least a modest size (a 60-litre minimum is cited for the congener) kept in a small group of three to six.
The near-scaleless skin typical of the family is a real husbandry point: nemacheilid loaches are sensitive to copper and to full-strength medication, and careful, reduced dosing is the safer default if treatment is ever needed. Given the temperate northern-China origin of this fish, a warm tropical community tank is the wrong setting — cooler, current-rich, well-aerated water is a better match for its wild habitat than the standard heated community aquarium.
Conservation
Barbatula nuda has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so it carries no conservation category here — recorded honestly as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status.
