Taxonomy & naming
Barbatula sawadai was described in 2007 by the Russian ichthyologist Alexander Prokofiev, part of a wave of revisionary work on the stone loaches of Central and East Asia that has split the old, catch-all genus Nemacheilus (and Noemacheilus) into a mosaic of narrower genera including Barbatula, Triplophysa and Schistura. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, whose valid names are governed by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS).
The species epithet honours the Japanese ichthyologist Yukio Sawada of Hokkaido University, whose osteological work on loaches underpins much of the modern classification of the group. As with many recently split Barbatula, older regional literature may still list Selenga-basin stone loaches under a broader Nemacheilus or Barbatula toni umbrella; the Catalog of Fishes now treats B. sawadai as its own valid species, distinguished from close congeners by a specific set of scale and fin characters rather than by colour pattern alone.
Morphology
Like other Barbatula, this is a slender, cylindrical, bottom-adapted loach with a flattened belly, a subterminal mouth ringed by barbels for probing the substrate, and a small erectile spine beneath the eye typical of the wider loach lineage. Reported maximum size is around 6 in standard length, making it a mid-sized stone loach — larger than many dwarf Schistura but far short of the big botiids.
Taxonomically it is separated from its closest relatives, B. altayensis and B. toni, by a combination of fine anatomical details: a body that is scaled forward of the dorsal fin (rather than naked), nostrils set close together rather than widely separated, and eight branched dorsal-fin rays where those congeners have seven. These are the kind of small, meristic differences typical of Nemacheilidae taxonomy — a family where many species are told apart by scale counts and fin-ray formulas rather than obvious external colour or pattern differences, and where field identification without a key is genuinely difficult.
Habitat
Barbatula sawadai is known from the Selenga River basin, the major drainage that rises in Mongolia and flows north into Russia's Lake Baikal. This is a temperate freshwater system, and the species is recorded as a benthic fish of cool, flowing water rather than a still or warm-tropical habitat.
As a bottom-dwelling stone loach in this kind of drainage, it is adapted to life over gravel, sand and stone in current, in water that runs considerably cooler than the tropical rivers most aquarium loaches come from. Specific published data on its microhabitat, depth and seasonal temperature range are sparse — this is a fish far better known from taxonomic collections than from field ecology studies — but the Selenga basin's cool, well-oxygenated character is the operative fact for anyone thinking about its needs.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary study is available for Barbatula sawadai, but its body plan places it firmly among the benthic micro-predators typical of Nemacheilidae: a subterminal, barbel-ringed mouth built for picking small invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny food items off the stream bed. FishBase records a trophic level around 2.7, consistent with a fish feeding low on the food web, largely on invertebrates rather than other fish or heavy plant matter.
In practice this makes it, and its close relatives, best approached as micro-predators rather than opportunistic scavengers: small live or frozen foods and sinking preparations that reach the substrate are what this kind of loach is built to eat, and a fish with this mouth and body form should not be expected to compete well for food at the surface or in open water.
Mating
No dimorphism or courtship data specific to Barbatula sawadai have been published; this is one of the many Nemacheilidae known essentially only from the museum specimens used in its original description and subsequent taxonomic revisions. Its congener Barbatula barbatula, the well-studied European stone loach, gives a general model for the genus — modest, seasonally-tied spawning with no strong external sexual dimorphism beyond breeding condition — but that should be read as a guide to the genus's general habits, not as a documented fact about this particular species.
Given how little is recorded, the honest position is that pairing, sexing and spawning behaviour in B. sawadai are undescribed in the literature available for this article.
Breeding
There is no record of Barbatula sawadai being bred in the aquarium, and the wider pattern across the stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae) is that they are rarely kept, let alone spawned, in captivity. Where breeding is documented in the genus and family, the pattern is an egg-scatterer laying over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward.
For this species specifically, data are sparse to the point that no aquarium spawning has been documented. Anyone encountering this fish in the hobby should treat it as effectively unbred in captivity, valued as an interesting cool-water oddity rather than a species with an established captive-breeding pathway.
In the aquarium
Barbatula sawadai is not an established aquarium fish, and species-specific care information is essentially absent from the hobby literature; what follows is inferred carefully from its family, genus and known habitat rather than from direct experience reports. As a Selenga-basin stone loach it should be treated as a cool-to-temperate species — not a warm tropical community fish — needing clean, well-oxygenated, flowing water over a sand or fine-gravel substrate it can forage through.
Like other Nemacheilidae it is scaleless or near-scaleless and likely shares the family's sensitivity to copper-based and full-strength medications, so any treatment should be conservative. Its close relative B. barbatula is documented as needing a group of four or more to do well, a reasonable precaution to extend to this species absent better data. Given how little is known, this is a fish best kept, if at all, by an experienced keeper prepared to research and replicate cool-water stream conditions rather than treat it as a drop-in community loach.
Conservation
Barbatula sawadai is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, an assessment dated 20 February 2020. It is not flagged as facing significant documented threats at this time.
As with much of the Selenga basin's fish fauna, the broader long-term pressures on the system are the usual ones for Central Asian rivers shared between Mongolia and Russia — water use, pollution and habitat alteration along the Selenga's course toward Lake Baikal — rather than any pressure from the aquarium trade, in which this species does not have an established presence.
