Taxonomy & naming
Barbatula sturanyi was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1892 as Nemachilus sturanyi, based on material from Lake Ohrid. For much of the twentieth century it was treated as a synonym or subspecies of the far more widespread Eurasian stone loach, passing through the combinations Barbatula barbatula and Orthrias barbatulus in various checklists. Modern taxonomic review has restored it as a distinct, valid species endemic to the Ohrid drainage, and the Catalog of Fishes — the authority followed here — lists it as Barbatula sturanyi, family Nemacheilidae.
The type locality is precisely documented: Lake Ohrid at Pestani, on the shore between the city of Ohrid and the Naum Monastery, in what was then Yugoslavia and is now the North Macedonia–Albania border area. The holotype is held at the Natural History Museum in Vienna (NMW 48440). The species epithet honours Rudolf Sturany (1867–1935), an Austrian malacologist and naturalist who worked on the fauna of the Balkans.
Morphology
Like other members of Nemacheilidae, Barbatula sturanyi is a small, elongate, bottom-hugging loach built for gripping stone in current rather than for open-water swimming. FishBase records a maximum size of about 4 in standard length, modest even by stone-loach standards. As in its relatives, the mouth is small, ventral and surrounded by barbels used to feel out food on the substrate, and the skin carries only minute, deeply embedded scales rather than the coarser scaling of many other freshwater fish — a trait shared across the family that leaves nemacheilids sensitive to harsh water conditions and medications.
Notably, FishBase describes B. sturanyi as a facultative air-breather, an adaptation that lets it tolerate periods of lower dissolved oxygen — useful in spring-fed habitats where flow and oxygenation can vary. Its trophic level is estimated around 2.7, consistent with a near-omnivorous micro-predator that takes some detritus alongside animal prey. Beyond these points the primary sources consulted do not describe fine details of colour pattern or fin structure for this species, so nothing further is asserted here.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the Lake Ohrid basin and the upper Drin River system, spanning the North Macedonia–Albania border in the southern Balkans — one of the most biologically ancient and distinctive lake systems in Europe. Within that basin it lives in springs and rocky streams with a stone bottom, the demersal, current-loving habitat typical of Nemacheilidae, rather than in the open water of the lake itself.
The available sources do not document specific temperature or pH readings for its native springs and streams. Given the setting — cool, spring-fed, rocky Balkan mountain streams — a cooler, well-oxygenated regime is a reasonable general expectation for this kind of habitat, but no figures are confirmed in the literature reviewed, and none are asserted as fact here. This is a freshwater species only, with no brackish or marine tolerance recorded.
Feeding
Barbatula sturanyi forages over stone and gravel substrate for small benthic invertebrates and insect larvae, the standard diet of a Nemacheilidae micro-predator working fast, clear water. Its estimated trophic level of roughly 2.7 points to an omnivorous leaning, likely taking some algae, detritus and organic material alongside animal prey rather than being a strict carnivore.
No aquarium-feeding notes exist for this species in the sources reviewed, since it is not established in the hobby. Based on the feeding ecology of its stone-loach relatives, a captive diet would be expected to need small live or frozen invertebrate foods and sinking preparations rather than flake, but this is inference from the family, not a documented fact for B. sturanyi itself.
Mating
No courtship, spawning behaviour, or sexual dimorphism has been documented for Barbatula sturanyi in the sources reviewed. Nothing distinguishes males from females in the available descriptions, and the species has not been studied or kept closely enough — in the wild or in captivity — for its reproductive behaviour to be recorded.
Across Nemacheilidae generally, stone and brook loaches are egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel and among stones in flowing water with no courtship display beyond simple pursuit, and there is no reason from the family's biology to expect anything different here. But that is a family-level inference, not a specific observation of this species, and it should be read as such.
Breeding
As with most Nemacheilidae, Barbatula sturanyi is presumed to be an egg-scatterer, broadcasting eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care afterward — the standard reproductive mode for stone and brook loaches. No aquarium spawning of this species has been documented, and it is not established in the hobby at all, so there is no captive-breeding record to draw on.
This is a genuinely data-sparse species in every practical sense: it is a narrow-range Balkan endemic studied primarily through taxonomic and conservation surveys rather than aquarium husbandry or detailed field ecology. The honest summary is that its breeding mode is inferred from its family, not observed and reported for this species specifically.
In the aquarium
Barbatula sturanyi is not a hobby fish. It does not appear in the aquarium trade literature reviewed — Loaches Online has no dedicated profile for it, and Seriously Fish likewise carries none, both citing its extreme range restriction and lack of trade presence as the likely reasons. There is no record of its being kept, bred or even photographed for hobbyist purposes.
Were it ever to reach a tank, the general expectations for small Nemacheilidae stream loaches would apply: cool, clean, fast, well-oxygenated water over a stone or gravel substrate, and caution with medications given the near-scaleless skin typical of the family. But none of this is drawn from documented experience with this species — it is inference from its relatives, offered with that caveat rather than as established fact.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Barbatula sturanyi as Near Threatened, an assessment carried out in December 2023. As a species restricted to a single lake basin and its immediate tributary springs and streams, it is inherently vulnerable to any degradation of that one system. Lake Ohrid itself faces pressure from pollution, shoreline development and introduced species — FishBase notes the introduction of pike-perch (Sander lucioperca) to the lake as one such pressure on the native fish community.
There is no evidence of any aquarium-trade demand for this species, so collecting pressure from the hobby is not a relevant threat; the risks here are purely habitat- and ecosystem-driven, tied to the health of the Ohrid basin itself. Its narrow endemism makes continued monitoring of water quality and invasive species in the lake important to its long-term status.
