Taxonomy & naming
Barbatula vardarensis was described by the Yugoslav ichthyologist Stanko Karaman in 1928, its epithet referencing the Vardar River, the Balkan drainage in which it is endemic. It sits in the genus Barbatula within the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — the largest of the loach families by species count, and one that has been repeatedly reshuffled as the old wastebasket genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were broken up into Barbatula, Oxynoemacheilus, Schistura, Triplophysa, Paracobitis and others.
A 2025 genus-wide revision of Barbatula in the Journal of Fish Biology (Calegari et al.) reaffirms B. vardarensis as a valid species within a broader taxonomic overhaul of the genus, and molecular barcoding work has identified it as one of three genetically distinct Eastern European Balkan clades — B. vardarensis, B. sturanyi and B. zetensis — that were historically lumped together or confused with the widespread western European B. barbatula. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the current valid combination, Barbatula vardarensis; older Balkan literature may still use Noemacheilus or Nemacheilus vardarensis for the same fish.
Morphology
Like other members of its family, Barbatula vardarensis is a small, elongate, cylindrical loach with a flattened belly built for hugging the streambed, a blunt snout ringed with barbels used to feel out food in the current, and tiny eyes set high on the head. Its close relative B. barbatula reaches up to about 8.5 in total length, though most stone loaches in this genus are considerably smaller in practice, and B. vardarensis is not documented to depart from that general size range.
As with other Nemacheilidae, the skin is essentially scaleless or bears only minute embedded scales, leaving the fish highly permeable to medications and sensitive to poor water quality — a point that matters for anyone who might keep or handle wild-caught specimens. Habitat

Barbatula vardarensis is not a fish of the aquarium trade — it is a narrow-range Balkan endemic known from scientific and conservation literature rather than fishkeeping sources, and it does not appear to be commercially collected or sold. Anyone encountering it would be doing so in the context of field research or regional conservation work, not a shop tank.
If it were to be kept, the general lessons for Nemacheilidae apply: this is a cool-to-cold, fast-flowing, high-oxygen stream fish, not a candidate for a warm, still community tank, and its near-scaleless skin means any medication should be dosed cautiously. But given the complete absence of aquarium-keeping data for this species specifically, no husbandry parameters beyond its natural water conditions should be presented as tested advice.
Conservation
Barbatula vardarensis has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. As a single-drainage Balkan endemic restricted to the Vardar system, it fits the profile of many narrow-range Nemacheilidae — genuinely data-sparse species whose conservation status is unknown simply because no full assessment has been carried out, not because the fish is known to be secure.
Balkan freshwater systems are under well-documented pressure from damming, water abstraction and pollution, and narrow-range stream endemics like this one are inherently more exposed to any single change in their home drainage than widespread species.
