Taxonomy & naming
Barbatula zetensis was described by Soric in 2000, originally as a subspecies — Orthrias barbatulus zetensis — of the widespread European stone loach complex. Later work on the Balkan Barbatula raised it to full species rank, and the Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority on valid fish names, now recognises it as Barbatula zetensis, one of roughly ten Barbatula species currently accepted in Europe west of the Urals. No earlier combination under the genus Nemacheilus is documented in the primary literature for this species, so the taxonomic thread runs cleanly from the original Orthrias subspecies to today's Barbatula.
The species belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, and one whose genus-level boundaries (Barbatula, Oxynoemacheilus, Orthrias and their neighbours) have been repeatedly reworked as researchers resolve the relationships among Europe's and western Asia's many stream-restricted lineages. The epithet zetensis refers to the Zeta, the historic name for the river system draining into Lake Skadar in Montenegro — the fish is, quite literally, named for its home water.
Morphology
Barbatula zetensis is a small, elongate, cylindrical loach typical of the genus, reaching a maximum reported standard length of about 2.5 in — modest even by stone-loach standards. Like other Barbatula it has a subterminal, downturned mouth ringed with short barbels used to feel and taste the substrate, small eyes set high on the head, and a body pattern of mottled brown-to-olive blotching over a paler ground colour that breaks up its outline against a stony streambed.
As in other true loaches, the skin carries only tiny, deeply embedded scales, leaving it functionally near-scaleless — a trait that matters far more for husbandry than for looks, since it makes the fish unusually permeable to medications and copper. Where present across the family, an erectile suborbital spine sits in a groove beneath the eye as a defensive structure; detailed descriptions specific to B. zetensis are sparse, so this should be read as a family-level trait rather than a confirmed observation for this exact species.
Habitat
This species is known only from the Lake Skadar basin, specifically the Moraca drainage in Montenegro — a single, geographically narrow river system on the Adriatic slope of the Balkans. It lives in streams and rivers with stony, gravel-bottomed beds, the classic nemacheilid habitat: cool, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water running over rock and coarse sediment rather than mud or sand.
FishBase records it as a temperate freshwater fish with a trophic level around 2.8, consistent with a benthic invertebrate feeder rather than a grazer or predator of other fish. As with all near-scaleless loaches, careful, reduced-dose medication and avoidance of copper-based treatments would be essential. This should be treated as general genus-level guidance, not a validated care sheet for this specific, effectively unkept species.
Conservation
Barbatula zetensis is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Endangered, with the current assessment dated 4 December 2023 under criteria B1ab(iii) — a listing driven by the fish's extremely restricted range rather than a single acute threat. Its entire known distribution lies within the Lake Skadar basin and Moraca drainage in Montenegro, a single river system in which any localised pollution, water abstraction, damming or habitat alteration could affect a meaningful share of the total population.
