Taxonomy & naming
Barbatula zhangwuensis was described in 2019 by Chen, Zhang, Chen & Freyhof as part of a broader review of the Barbatula loaches of north-eastern China, published in the journal Zootaxa. The species epithet zhangwuensis refers to Zhangwu County in Liaoning Province, the type locality on the Liu River where the species was collected.
It belongs to the genus Barbatula within the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — the largest family of true loaches, encompassing hundreds of small, mostly unpatterned or faintly mottled species distributed across Eurasia. The Catalog of Fishes governs the valid combination, and it remains Barbatula zhangwuensis; no synonymy or reassignment has been noted since the description.
Morphology
The original description characterizes Barbatula zhangwuensis by a set of fine anatomical details rather than any bold external pattern, typical of the genus: widely spaced nostrils, a pointed snout, a shallow median incision in the upper lip, and a short lateral expansion of the lower lip. The pelvic-fin origin sits behind the origin of the dorsal fin. Distinctively, the back and flank immediately in front of the dorsal-fin origin are scaleless, while scales further back on the body are set in an irregular, non-overlapping pattern rather than the neat rows seen in many relatives.
As in other Nemacheilidae, the skin is functionally naked — scales, where present, are tiny and deeply embedded rather than forming an armored covering — and the species almost certainly carries the small, erectile suborbital spine typical of the family, used defensively and easily felt if the fish is handled. No maximum size figure was captured in the source material for this species; congeners in Barbatula are typically modest stream fish in the range of a few centimetres to around 4.5 in, and this species should be assumed to sit toward the smaller end of that range absent confirmed data.
Habitat
Barbatula zhangwuensis is known from the Liu River drainage near Zhangwu, Liaoning Province, in the temperate northeast of China — a region of cool winters and moderate summers far removed from the warm tropical rivers most aquarium loaches come from. Stone loaches in this genus characteristically live in shallow, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated streams and rivers with gravel, sand or stony substrates, foraging along the bottom in the current.
