Botia kubotai, the polka-dot or marble loach, is one of the most striking botiid loaches in the aquarium trade — a boldly patterned fish from the clear, fast rivers of Myanmar whose cream-and-dark reticulated blotching shifts subtly as the fish matures. Described by Maurice Kottelat in 2004, it was quickly welcomed by the hobby as a smaller, visually distinctive alternative to the yoyo loach, sharing the family's characteristic combination of an erectile suborbital spine, near-scaleless skin and an obligate social temperament that makes it best kept in a group of five or more. Like all botiids it is an egg-scatterer tied to seasonal flood migrations and is essentially never bred in the home aquarium.

Taxonomy & naming

Botia kubotai was formally described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 2004, the same prolific year in which he also erected the genus Chromobotia for the clown loach and revised much of the broader botiid family. The species is named in honour of Nonn Panitvong's collaborator Manop Kubota, who assisted in fieldwork in Thailand and Myanmar — the epithet kubotai honours him directly. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists the valid combination as Botia kubotai Kottelat, 2004.

The species belongs to the family Botiidae, the botiid loaches, a clade long assembled under the old family Cobitidae before molecular and morphological work established its distinct status. Within Botiidae it sits in the genus Botia alongside the yoyo loach (Botia lohachata), the zebra loach (Botia striata) and several other South and Southeast Asian species. In the trade it has also been sold under the informal names 'polka-dot loach' and 'marble loach', reflecting the variable, mottled pattern that makes different individuals look somewhat unlike one another.

Morphology

Botia kubotai is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed loach with an arched back and a pointed, downward-angled snout equipped with two to three pairs of barbels for probing the substrate. The ground colour is pale cream to yellowish, overlaid with a dark reticulated or blotchy pattern that forms irregular saddles across the back and flanks; the exact patterning varies noticeably between individuals and also changes somewhat as the fish ages, shifting from a more spotted juvenile pattern toward a more marbled adult one. Finnage is clear to lightly marked. It reaches approximately 4.5–5 in in standard length in the wild, though aquarium specimens typically remain somewhat smaller.

Like all botiids, Botia kubotai carries an erectile spine beneath each eye — the suborbital or preorbital spine that gives the old family its common name of spined loaches. These sharp spines can be locked outward defensively and will readily catch in a fine-mesh net; the fish is best moved in a container rather than scooped directly. The skin is effectively near-scaleless, covered only in tiny, deeply embedded scales, which gives the body a smooth, naked texture and is a key point for medication management.

Habitat

Botia kubotai is native to Myanmar, with records from the Salween (Thanlwin) and Ataran river drainages in the south of the country. It inhabits clear, fast-flowing hill streams and river tributaries with rocky or gravel substrates, often where the current is brisk and dissolved oxygen levels are high. The water is soft to moderately hard and neutral to slightly acidic; temperatures in these foothill rivers typically range from around 72–79 °F, dropping cooler in the dry-season low-water period when the current runs cleaner and faster.

These are not the sluggish, turbid lowland rivers of much of Southeast Asia but clear, well-oxygenated upland streams — a fact that matters in the aquarium, because the fish requires good water movement and high oxygenation. The substrate in its home rivers tends to be smooth rocks, coarse gravel and sand with patches of leaf litter and submerged wood, providing both foraging ground and cover.

Feeding

Botia kubotai is an omnivore with a strong preference for small benthic invertebrates. In the wild it forages over rocky and gravelly river beds for insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and molluscs, using its sensitive barbels to locate prey in gaps and crevices. Its appetite for pest snails is a genuine and useful aquarium trait: a healthy group will methodically work through a snail population, crushing shells with its pharyngeal teeth.

In the aquarium it accepts a wide range of foods readily. Sinking pellets and wafers form a practical staple; these should be supplemented regularly with frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, tubifex and Daphnia, which maintain condition and colour. Some plant material and blanched vegetables round out the diet. Because this is an active shoaling fish with a social hierarchy, food should be offered generously and spread across the tank floor so that lower-ranking individuals get their share; a light feed after lights-out suits its partly nocturnal foraging habit.

Mating

Sexual dimorphism in Botia kubotai is subtle and unreliable at most life stages. Fully conditioned females are generally deeper-bodied and somewhat rounder in the belly than males, but outside of peak condition the two sexes are difficult to distinguish, which complicates any deliberate effort to assemble a breeding pair or group. As with other botiids, males can develop minute tubercles on the snout during the breeding season, though this is rarely observed in aquarium fish.

In the wild, breeding is almost certainly tied to the seasonal hydrology of the Salween drainage — rising water levels and increased flow during the monsoon likely trigger migration and spawning activity, as they do in related botiid species. Recreating these cues in a home aquarium requires simulating substantial changes in water volume, temperature, current and chemistry that are beyond the reach of typical tank husbandry, which is the core reason the species has not established itself as a captive-breeding subject.

Breeding

Botia kubotai is, to the best of current knowledge, not bred in home aquaria. It is an egg-scatterer with no parental care: spawning in the wild involves releasing eggs into flowing water, after which the adults play no further role. The larvae drift and develop without any guarding or attendance. This egg-scattering, no-care mode is consistent across the botiid family; it is important to note that botiids are neither cave-spawning male guarders (as in some gobies) nor mouthbrooders — the eggs simply drift free.

The aquarium trade supply of Botia kubotai comes from commercial collection of wild-caught fish in Myanmar, augmented in some markets by farm-raised stock produced with hormone induction on Southeast Asian fish farms — the same method that supplies clown loaches at scale. For the home keeper, this fish should be bought and enjoyed for its appearance and behaviour, not with any expectation of breeding it.

In the aquarium

Botia kubotai is an active, rewarding loach for a moderately experienced keeper, but it has several non-negotiable requirements. The most important is sociality: it is an obligate-social species and must be kept in a group of at least five, preferably more. A lone fish or a pair becomes withdrawn and stressed; a proper shoal forms a loose hierarchy, interacts constantly, and will click audibly — the characteristic sound botiids produce with their pharyngeal teeth during feeding and social interaction. A 100-litre tank is a workable minimum for a small group, with larger being better as adults approach their full size.

Water quality must be high. The fish comes from well-oxygenated foothill rivers and demands clean, well-filtered water with noticeable flow — a powerhead or spray bar to create current is beneficial. Temperature in the 72–79 °F range suits it. Being near-scaleless, it is sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many treatments, including those used against ich; half-doses with careful monitoring are the rule whenever the tank needs medicating. Paradoxically, the thin skin also makes it one of the first fish in a tank to show signs of ich or velvet, so early detection matters. The tank should have a soft-to-sandy area for resting, plenty of smooth rocks and caves for shelter, and dim-to-moderate lighting; this is not a brightly lit open-water fish. Feeding should be varied and generous, spread across the tank so that all fish in the shoal eat well.

Conservation

Botia kubotai has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; it carries no official conservation category and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. Its known native range is restricted to the Salween and Ataran river systems in Myanmar — a relatively limited distribution that, in principle, makes it more vulnerable to localised habitat pressures than a more widespread species.

Myanmar's freshwater habitats face a range of threats including proposed and active hydropower development on the Salween, deforestation in upland catchments, and water extraction pressure. The extent to which wild collection for the aquarium trade affects Botia kubotai populations is not well documented, but the species has been commercially collected since at least the mid-2000s. Until a formal assessment is completed, its conservation status remains unknown; the precautionary position is that buyers should favour captive-produced stock where available, and that the trade should be monitored for signs of unsustainable wild take.
