Botia striata, the zebra loach, is a compact and strikingly patterned botiid endemic to a handful of rivers in the Western Ghats of India — one of the planet's biodiversity hotspots. Its pale body is crossed by a tight series of dark, wavy vertical bars that give it both its common name and an elegance out of proportion to its modest 3 in size. Like all botiids it is obligate-social, carrying an erectile suborbital spine and near-scaleless skin, and it demands clean, well-oxygenated water with the clarity of its upland stream home. The IUCN rates it Endangered, with a range covering fewer than 249 mi² across just four fragmented river systems, and the aquarium trade has historically drawn on wild-collected fish from those already pressured populations.

Taxonomy & naming

Botia striata was described in 1920 by C. R. Narayan Rao from material collected in the Tunga River at Shimoga (now Shivamogga), Mysore Province — present-day Karnataka. The type locality is sometimes transcribed as "Thumga," reflecting a transliteration variant of the same river name. The species remains in the genus Botia, one of the original botiid genera and still the correct placement under the Catalog of Fishes.

It belongs to the family Botiidae — the "true" botiid loaches, distinct from the kuhli loaches (Cobitidae) and the hillstream loaches (Balitoridae). The genus Botia, once used as a catch-all, has been progressively narrowed by revisions that erected Yasuhikotakia, Syncrossus, Chromobotia, Ambastaia and others; the remaining Botia species, including B. striata, form a core South and Southeast Asian group. No synonyms of B. striata are in active use.

Morphology

The zebra loach is a small, slender-bodied botiid reaching about 3 in standard length — a modest size compared with its larger relatives, making it one of the more aquarium-practical members of the family. The body is pale cream to yellowish-white and marked with numerous narrow, dark, oblique to wavy vertical bars that run from the dorsal midline down the flanks; these bars are tightly packed and somewhat irregular, lending the fish a striped rather than a simple-banded appearance.

Like every botiid, it carries a sharp, erectile suborbital spine housed in a groove below the eye. This spine can be flicked outward defensively, snagging nets and capable of drawing blood from a careless hand; always move zebra loaches in a container rather than a mesh net. The body is covered in tiny, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin functionally near-scaleless — a characteristic that has important implications for medication sensitivity.

Habitat

Botia striata is known from four river systems in the northern Western Ghats: the Tunga and Bhadra rivers in Karnataka, and the Panchaganga and Koyna rivers in Maharashtra. These are clear, fast-flowing upland streams fed by monsoon rainfall and characterised by clean, well-oxygenated water, rocky and sandy substrates, moderate to strong current, and low levels of organic material. The catchment sits within a globally recognised biodiversity hotspot, and the streams themselves are cool relative to lowland Indian rivers.

Water quality parameters recorded from the natural range are pH 6.0–8.0 and temperatures around 72–79 °F. The fish is a demersal, bottom-oriented species, foraging over gravel and rock in the faster sections of its streams. It does not penetrate brackish or standing water.

Feeding

Botia striata is an omnivore that tilts strongly toward small invertebrates. In the wild it forages over the substrate for insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans, and molluscs; in the aquarium it earns genuine respect as a pest-snail controller, working through populations of bladder snails and ramshorns with efficiency.

In captivity it accepts a wide range: tubifex, mosquito larvae, daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm (frozen or live), sinking pellets and wafers, and blanched vegetables such as spinach, cucumber or courgette. Variety and quality matter — a diet skewed to dry food alone produces fish with poorer colour and condition. Because zebra loaches are partly nocturnal and social, the shoal should be fed generously enough that subordinates get their share; a second feeding after lights-out is worthwhile.

Mating

External sexual dimorphism is limited. Ripe females tend to be noticeably deeper-bodied and rounder in the abdominal profile when in condition, while males are more slender — but outside of the breeding season the two sexes are difficult to distinguish with certainty. As in other botiids, maturity appears to be reached after the fish has grown for some time, and conditioning requires a high-quality, varied diet rich in live and frozen foods.

In the wild, spawning is linked to the South Asian monsoon cycle: rising water levels, increased flow, and changes in temperature and chemistry appear to be the proximate triggers for reproductive activity. Males reportedly chase females actively in the lead-up to spawning. Recreating these cues in a home aquarium is difficult, which is the core obstacle to domestic breeding.

Breeding

Botia striata is an egg-scatterer with no parental care. Eggs are scattered in hiding spots or among substrate, and the adults take no further interest in them or the resulting larvae. Successful spawning in home aquaria is extremely rare; the few accounts that exist come from commercial facilities rather than ordinary hobbyist tanks.

As with most botiids, commercial supply of zebra loaches relies predominantly on wild-caught fish from the species' native Western Ghats rivers, and to some extent on hormone-induced spawning at specialist facilities rather than on routine aquarium breeding. A keeper should not expect to breed this species in a home tank; the emphasis should be on maintaining a thriving, healthy long-term shoal.

In the aquarium

Botia striata is one of the most aquarium-practical botiids — compact enough for a 47 in tank, not prone to the outsized growth of the clown loach, and lively without being destructive. Its central requirement mirrors that of every botiid: it is obligate-social. Kept singly or in pairs it becomes withdrawn and stressed; a group of at least five allows it to form the social hierarchy in which it thrives, and a larger group of eight or more is better still. A healthy group will click audibly and spend much of the day tumbling and jostling together.

Water quality is non-negotiable. The zebra loach comes from clean, well-oxygenated upland streams with low organic load, and it reflects poor maintenance quickly — declining activity, loss of colour, and susceptibility to disease are early warning signs. Filtration should be generous, the tank well-aerated, and partial water changes regular. pH 6.5–7.5 and temperature 72–79 °F cover the comfortable range; avoid the warmer end of the tropical spectrum.

Near-scaleless skin makes this species sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many treatments. It is also, like most loaches, among the first fish in a community to develop ich (white spot) when the pathogen is present. The correct response is to treat early, carefully, at reduced dose (typically half the stated amount), using products labelled as safe for scaleless fish and avoiding copper entirely. A soft-to-medium substrate, ample cover in the form of rocks and bogwood, and dim or well-planted areas satisfy its preference for sheltered resting places.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Botia striata as Endangered in 2011. The assessment cites a restricted extent of occurrence — fewer than 249 mi² — across only four fragmented river localities in the Western Ghats. The population is further threatened by habitat degradation driven by agricultural encroachment, water extraction and pollution, compounded by unsustainable collection pressure from the ornamental fish trade. The Katkari people of the region have historically relied on the species both as a source of food and as an income from the aquarium trade, adding a socioeconomic dimension to conservation discussions.

The Western Ghats as a whole is recognised as a global biodiversity hotspot, but the individual stream systems in which B. striata occurs are small, isolated and vulnerable to land-use change. The species' narrow endemic range means there is no adjacent population to replenish a depleted river; local extinctions would be permanent losses. Responsible hobbyists should verify that any zebra loaches they purchase come from captive-bred or responsibly managed sources rather than wild collection, and support efforts to establish a self-sustaining captive population.
