Cobitis afifeae is a small, temperate spined loach described in 2018 from the Büyük Menderes River drainage of western Anatolia, one of eight new Cobitis species split out of the Middle East's tangled spined-loach fauna in the same paper. Like every member of its genus it is a coldwater, sand-sifting bottom-dweller carrying the erectile suborbital spine that gives the family Cobitidae its name — and, as with most narrow-range Turkish Cobitis, it has no presence in the aquarium trade and next to no aquarium literature. What is known comes from the taxonomic description itself.

Taxonomy & naming

Cobitis afifeae was formally described by Jörg Freyhof, Fahri Bayçelebi and Matthias Geiger in 2018 (published in Zootaxa 4535(1): 1–75, 2019), as one of eight new Cobitis species erected in a single review of spined loaches from the Middle East region. The genus Cobitis — the true spined loaches — is large, temperate-to-subtropical and heavily revised in recent decades as researchers have worked through look-alike populations across Anatolia, the Caucasus and the Levant using fine anatomical characters; Turkey alone hosts roughly two dozen described Cobitis species, several named in the same wave as this one (among them C. puncticulata, C. fahireae, C. kellei, C. evreni and C. fusunae).

The holotype, ZFMK ICH-99950, was collected from the Büyük Menderes River and measures 2.5 in SL; paratypes range 2–3 in SL. The species sits in the family Cobitidae (spined & pond loaches), a placement that has not shifted since its description — there is no older combination to correct here, as this is a fish named directly into its current genus.

Morphology

Cobitis afifeae is a slender, elongate loach in the classic spined-loach body plan: a low, laterally compressed body built for lying against or burrowing into sand, with small eyes set high on the head and barbels around a downturned mouth for probing the substrate. Below each eye sits the erectile suborbital spine that defines the family — a small, forked, blade-like spine folded into a groove of skin that the fish can flick out when handled or threatened, a useful field mark and the reason the family is nicknamed the spined loaches.

The description separates C. afifeae from its close Anatolian relatives on a combination of fine characters: males possess two laminae circularis (a diagnostic pad of modified scales used in courtship, typical of male Cobitis), the fourth scale row below the lateral line carries a row of dark blotches, there is a roundish-to-comma-shaped black spot at the upper base of the caudal fin, and the mental lobes (fleshy projections at the chin) are notably elevated compared to congeners. Reported standard lengths in the type series run to about 3 in; no separate maximum-length figure beyond the type series has been published.

Habitat

The species is known from the Büyük Menderes River drainage, which flows into the Aegean Sea in western Turkey — a temperate river system, not a tropical one. Like other Anatolian Cobitis it is expected to live over sand and fine sediment in flowing water, where its flattened body and barbels let it lie still or burrow shallowly, sifting the substrate for food and disappearing from view almost entirely when at rest.

This is a coldwater, temperate species. Unlike the tropical spined loaches of South and Southeast Asia (the horseface Acantopsis or Lepidocephalichthys, which need warm water year-round), Anatolian Cobitis experience a proper seasonal temperature cycle, from cool winters to warm summers, in rivers fed by snowmelt and groundwater. No aquarium husbandry has been documented for this species, so all habitat inference here follows the description paper and the known ecology of the genus rather than direct observation in captivity.

Feeding

No feeding study has been published for Cobitis afifeae specifically, but the genus is uniformly a benthic, sand-sifting omnivore: wild Cobitis take chironomid and other insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms and organic detritus sifted from the streambed, passing sediment through the gills and mouth as they forage. There is no reason to expect this species departs from that pattern.

As an undescribed aquarium subject, no captive diet has been documented. Any care would need to follow the genus norm — small sinking live, frozen or prepared foods offered over or worked into a soft substrate the fish can sift, rather than food taken from open water.

Mating

Nothing has been published on courtship or spawning behaviour in Cobitis afifeae itself. The description does record that males carry the laminae circularis, the modified scale pad on the pectoral-fin region used by male Cobitis during spawning to clasp the female — a structural clue that its reproductive behaviour follows the pattern typical of the genus, even though it has never been observed directly in this species.

Temperate Cobitis generally spawn in spring as water temperatures rise, with no evidence of any pairing, cave-guarding or mouthbrooding behaviour — traits that belong to entirely different fish groups, not to spined loaches. Nothing in the literature suggests C. afifeae would differ from that broad pattern, but it should be read as inference from the genus rather than a confirmed observation.

Breeding

As with most narrow-range Cobitis described in the last decade, there is no record of Cobitis afifeae being bred or even kept in the aquarium hobby. The genus as a whole is an egg-scatterer: ripe fish release adhesive eggs among plants or fine debris, typically in spring, with no parental care afterward. Several widespread temperate members of the family — Cobitis taenia in Europe, and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus anguillicaudatus — have been pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and researchers, which shows the reproductive mode is achievable for coldwater Cobitidae under the right seasonal cues. The tropical Cobitidae, by contrast (the horseface Acantopsis, Lepidocephalichthys), generally have not been bred at home.

Cobitis afifeae itself falls on the temperate side of that divide by geography, but being a recently described, narrow-range Anatolian endemic with no trade presence, it has not been tried. The honest statement is that this species has never been bred in captivity, and any spawning would have to follow the general Cobitis pattern of adhesive, scattered eggs with no parental care.

In the aquarium

Cobitis afifeae is not in the aquarium trade and has no documented aquarium keeping history — there is no hobbyist care profile, forum record, or commercial listing to draw on. Anything offered here is inference from its genus and habitat, not observation of the species itself.

Were it ever kept, the genus norm would apply: an unheated or lightly heated tank tracking its native temperate seasonal range rather than a warm tropical setup, a soft sand substrate deep enough to sift and burrow in, and gentle current mimicking flowing river water. Like other Cobitidae it is expected to be essentially scaleless and sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, a trait that runs through the whole spined-loach family and warrants caution with any wild-collected fish exposed to disease. In practice, this is a species known from taxonomy alone, not from the hobby.

Conservation

Cobitis afifeae has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category as of 2026; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. This is typical for recently split, narrow-range Anatolian Cobitis — many of the eight species described alongside it in 2018 remain similarly unassessed.

As a single-drainage endemic restricted to the Büyük Menderes system, it shares the general vulnerability of Turkish freshwater fish to water abstraction, damming, pollution and habitat alteration that affects Aegean-basin rivers, though no population trend or specific threat has been documented for this species in the literature reviewed. There is no evidence of any aquarium-trade collection pressure on this species.
