Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis anabelae was formally described in 2018 by Jörg Freyhof, Yusuf Bayçelebi and Matthias Geiger as part of a comprehensive revision of the genus Cobitis across the Middle East, a study that reviewed thirty species and described eight of them as new. The type locality lies in the lower Orontes (Asi) River drainage in Hatay Province, Turkey — a river system that flows from Lebanon and Syria into Turkey before reaching the Mediterranean, and one that has produced several other recently described spined loaches.
The species sits in the family Cobitidae, the true spined loaches, within the genus Cobitis Linnaeus, 1758 — the type genus of the family. Cobitis species across Europe, Anatolia, the Caucasus and the Middle East are separated mainly by fine pigmentation patterns, meristic counts and, increasingly, karyotype and genetics, since many are near-identical to the naked eye. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name Cobitis anabelae; there is no older combination, as this is a genuinely new species from the 2018 revision, not a reclassified one.
Morphology
Cobitis anabelae is a true loach of the family Cobitidae, carrying the erectile suborbital spine that gives the family its name — a small, sharp, foldable spine hidden in a groove beneath the eye that the fish can flick out when handled or threatened. Like other members of the genus it has a slender, elongate, laterally compressed body suited to living low in the water column and burrowing into sand.
The describers separated Cobitis anabelae from its close relatives using several fine anatomical characters: males possess two laminae circularis (a specialised bony structure on the pectoral fin used in species identification within this genus), and the species carries a distinctive pigmentation pattern along the flank — a row of small brown spots along zone Z2 that are noticeably smaller than the blotches of zone Z3, with the two zones well separated from one another and no pigmentation extending below zone Z4. As with most Cobitis, the skin bears fine, deeply embedded scales rather than the smooth nakedness of some other loach groups, but it is still scaleless-feeling and sensitive by loach standards. Precise maximum size has not been published for this species; related Middle Eastern Cobitis are small fish, typically well under 4 in.
Habitat
This species is known from the lower Orontes (Asi) River drainage in Hatay Province, southern Turkey, part of the Asi River system that also runs through Syria and Lebanon before reaching the Mediterranean. A length-weight study of the basin's Cobitis fauna, based on specimens collected between June 2017 and March 2018, confirms the species living alongside three other Cobitis species in this river system and explicitly flags it as a threatened component of the Asi basin's fish fauna.
Cobitis, as a genus, is a true coldwater and temperate group — not a tropical one. Wild populations across the genus experience natural water temperatures around 57–64 °F, with some individual rivers ranging from near-freezing winters to summer highs approaching 86 °F. Like other spined loaches it is a bottom-dweller of flowing water over soft, sandy substrate, sheltering among stones and roots rather than in open water — the same habitat template shared across the genus, though no habitat-specific description has been published for Cobitis anabelae beyond its Orontes drainage type locality.
Feeding
No diet study specific to Cobitis anabelae has been published, but the feeding ecology of Cobitis as a genus is well documented and there is no reason to expect this species differs. Spined loaches are sand-sifting benthic omnivores: they take small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — sifted or picked from a soft substrate, along with some detritus and organic material from the streambed.
In the aquarium, genus-wide experience shows Cobitis are slow, deliberate feeders that do best on live and frozen foods such as black mosquito larvae, bloodworm and Tubifex, supplemented with sinking dried tablets or granules formulated for bottom-feeding fish. A soft substrate is important so the fish can forage and sift naturally rather than simply picking off the surface of coarse gravel.
Mating
No description of sexual dimorphism or courtship has been published for Cobitis anabelae specifically. Across the genus Cobitis, however, males can typically be distinguished by the laminae circularis on the pectoral fin — the very character used to help diagnose this species — a specialised structure females lack, along with generally more robust pectoral fins in males overall.
Genus-wide, Cobitis are spring spawners: as water temperatures rise, ripe fish move into shallow, vegetated margins where courtship involves a male chasing and clasping a female, triggering the release of eggs. There is no published record of Cobitis anabelae having been observed spawning, in the wild or in captivity — the 2018 description paper is primarily a taxonomic and morphological account, not a behavioural one.
Breeding
Cobitis anabelae has not been reported bred in the aquarium, and there are no husbandry accounts for the species at all — it remains known almost entirely from the taxonomic literature. Based on the well-documented breeding biology of the genus, it can be expected to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care: ripe adults release adhesive eggs among plants or fine root systems, typically in spring, and the eggs are left to develop unguarded.
Several temperate Cobitis species, along with the related dojo/weather loach Misgurnus, have been successfully pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and researchers working with unheated, seasonally-cooled setups that mimic a natural temperate cycle — in contrast to the tropical Cobitidae genera such as Acantopsis and Lepidocephalichthys, which are generally not bred at home. Whether Cobitis anabelae specifically has ever been spawned in captivity is not documented; given how recently it was described and how little attention Middle Eastern Cobitis receive in the hobby, it should be treated as essentially unbred in aquaria.
In the aquarium
Cobitis anabelae is not established in the aquarium trade, and no keeper accounts of it exist in the available literature — this is a scientifically-known river endemic, not a hobby fish. Anyone attempting to keep it should treat it strictly as a coldwater to cool-temperate species, following the genus-wide pattern: an unheated or lightly-heated tank rather than a warm tropical setup, soft sand for natural sifting behaviour, and flat stones, roots or similar cover to shelter in.
As with all Cobitidae, the near-scaleless skin makes this genus sensitive to copper and to full-strength doses of many medications, so any treatment should start conservative. Cobitis are also slow, retiring feeders that can lose out to faster tankmates, so stocking should favour calm, similarly-paced companions. Given the complete absence of trade or husbandry history for this specific species, anyone encountering it should assume it needs the careful, research-first approach appropriate to a newly described, range-restricted river endemic rather than a proven aquarium fish.
Conservation
Cobitis anabelae has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. It is known only from the Asi (Orontes) River drainage in Hatay Province, Turkey, part of a transboundary river system it shares with Syria and Lebanon — a narrow range that, combined with its recent description, means its conservation status is genuinely unknown rather than confirmed as safe.
A 2018–2019 field study of the Asi basin's Cobitis fauna explicitly identifies Cobitis anabelae as one of several threatened fish species in the system, alongside its congeners, though this designation predates and sits outside any formal IUCN assessment. River systems in this region face pressure from water abstraction, damming and agricultural runoff, and a narrow-range endemic restricted to a single transboundary drainage is inherently more exposed to those pressures than a widespread species. There is no aquarium trade in this species to speak of, so any conservation risk here is driven entirely by habitat pressure in its native Orontes drainage, not by collection.
