Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis aliyeae was described in 2018 by Jörg Freyhof, Yusuf Bayçelebi and Matthias Geiger in their revision of the genus Cobitis in the Middle East, published in Zootaxa, which added eight new species to a genus long under-sampled across Anatolia and the Levant. It is a true spined loach in the family Cobitidae, the group that also holds the coldwater Sabanejewia and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus.
The species is distinguished from its Cobitis relatives by details of male breeding structures and body pigmentation: males carry two laminae circularis (bony plates used to clasp the female during spawning), and the dark blotches along the flank — in zones the authors label Z1 through Z4 — sit in a distinctive pattern, with the blotches anterior to the dorsal-fin origin well separated and the Z1 pigmentation clearly distinct from Z2. As with many recently split Anatolian and Middle Eastern Cobitis, older literature and any wild-caught material collected before 2018 would have been folded into a broader, now-outdated species concept; the Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the current name, Cobitis aliyeae, and no other combination should be used.
Morphology
Cobitis aliyeae is a slender, elongated loach typical of its genus: a rounded body in cross-section, a small ventrally placed mouth ringed with barbels for probing sediment, and — the defining family trait — an erectile spine hidden in a groove beneath each eye that can be flicked out defensively. Like other spined loaches its scales are tiny and deeply embedded, leaving the skin effectively naked to the touch, a detail that matters for disease sensitivity and medication far more than for looks.
Colouration follows the Cobitis pattern of dark blotches and mottling along a pale flank, broken into the zoned bands (Z1–Z4) used to separate this species from its relatives; males additionally carry the laminae circularis, a bony clasping structure below the caudal fin used to hold the female during spawning, which is one of the few reliable ways to sex the genus. No maximum length has been published for this species specifically; congeners such as the well-studied Cobitis taenia typically reach 3–4 in, with females running slightly larger, and a similar range is a reasonable working expectation until species-specific data is published.
Habitat
The species is known only from the lower Seyhan and Ceyhan river drainages of southeastern Anatolia, Turkey — Mediterranean-slope river systems that drain from the Taurus Mountains toward the eastern Mediterranean coast. These are fast-flowing systems with a mix of mountain-stream and lowland reaches, and the ichthyofauna of the wider Seyhan–Ceyhan–Orontes river complex is diverse, holding dozens of fish species including several endemic loaches.
As with other Cobitis, the species is expected to favour slower-flowing margins and pools within these rivers, with a fine sand or silt substrate it can bury into and sift for food — the genus's signature microhabitat. This is a temperate, coldwater environment, not a tropical one: Anatolian rivers at this latitude run cool for much of the year, and detailed water-chemistry data for this specific species has not been published.
Feeding
Cobitis aliyeae is presumed, on the strength of its genus, to be a sand-sifting benthic omnivore. Spined loaches forage by burrowing into and sifting soft substrate, taking small worms, insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and molluscs along with detritus, using the barbels around the mouth to locate food by touch and taste in low light or turbid water.
No dedicated feeding study exists for this species, so this account follows the well-documented diet of Cobitis taenia and other congeners rather than direct observation. A soft, fine substrate is central to how any Cobitis feeds naturally; on gravel or coarse sand this foraging behaviour is largely lost.
Mating
No mating behaviour has been recorded for Cobitis aliyeae specifically. In the genus generally, males are distinguishable from females by the laminae circularis — bony plates near the base of the caudal fin used to clasp the female during spawning — a feature the original description confirms is present (in a two-plate form) in male Cobitis aliyeae, making sexing at least theoretically possible for anyone who encountered the species. Beyond that anatomical marker, temperate Cobitis typically spawn in spring as water temperatures rise, scattering adhesive eggs over vegetation or fine substrate, but no field or captive observations of this particular species' spawning have been published.
Breeding
This is a spined loach of the temperate Cobitidae, the group within which spring spawning and occasional pond- or tank-breeding has been documented — unlike the tropical Cobitidae (the horseface loach Acantopsis, the genus Lepidocephalichthys), which are rarely if ever reproduced by hobbyists. Cobitis aliyeae would be expected to follow the general Cobitis pattern: an egg-scatterer that releases adhesive eggs among plants or fine substrate in spring, with no parental care given to eggs or fry once released.
In practice, though, Cobitis aliyeae is not a fish that has been bred, or even kept, in the aquarium hobby. It was described in 2018 from a restricted Anatolian river system and has no recorded presence in the trade; everything about its reproduction here is inference from its genus rather than direct observation of this species, and that gap should be stated plainly rather than papered over.
In the aquarium
Cobitis aliyeae is not a fish available to aquarists — there is no evidence of it entering the trade, and this account should not be read as a care guide from experience. If it were ever kept, the genus's requirements would apply: a cool, unheated setup rather than a tropical one, a soft fine sand bed deep enough to allow burrowing and sifting, good water quality, and gentle to moderate flow reflecting its fast-flowing native rivers.
Being near-scaleless like all Cobitidae, any Cobitis is sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications, and spined loaches are often among the first fish in a mixed setup to show signs of ich — a reason for caution with any treatment. None of this is species-specific advice for Cobitis aliyeae; it is the general profile of its genus, offered because no dedicated husbandry information for this species exists.
Conservation
Cobitis aliyeae has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation status here beyond Not Evaluated. Described only in 2018 from a geographically restricted pair of river drainages in southeastern Anatolia, it fits the profile of many newly split Middle Eastern Cobitis: a narrow-range endemic about which too little is currently known to assign a category, rather than a species confirmed to be secure.
Several Anatolian and European spined loaches have been found threatened once properly assessed, as river regulation, water abstraction and pollution affect the small drainages many of them are confined to. There is no evidence this species is targeted by the aquarium trade; the primary conservation-relevant pressures, where they exist, would be to its river habitat in the Seyhan and Ceyhan systems rather than collection.
