Taxonomy & naming
Erromyzon yangi was formally described by D. A. Neely, K. W. Conway and R. L. Mayden in 2007, making it one of the more recently named members of a genus that has expanded steadily as systematic work on Chinese hillstream fishes has intensified. The genus Erromyzon belongs to the family Balitoridae — the hillstream and torrent loaches — whose members are collectively defined by extreme rheophily: body plans sculpted by millions of years of evolution in fast, stone-bottomed streams.
The Balitoridae have been revised repeatedly as molecular studies have untangled their relationships, and the boundaries between Balitoridae and the closely related Gastromyzontidae are still debated in the literature. Erromyzon itself is a small genus of southern Chinese and Indochinese hillstream loaches, sharing its sucker-disc morphology with genera such as Gastromyzon and Sewellia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the species as Erromyzon yangi, and that combination is followed here.
The species epithet honours Yang, though the available data do not clarify the honorand beyond the original description. No widely-used common name has been established in the English-language hobby, and the fish is rarely encountered in trade.
Morphology
Like every member of its genus, Erromyzon yangi is dorso-ventrally flattened to an extreme degree. The head and body are depressed, the paired pectoral and pelvic fins are held horizontally and spread wide, and the underside of the fish — from snout to vent — forms a broad, adhesive surface against the rock. This is not a sucker-disc in the strict sense (the lip structure varies across balitorid genera) but the entire ventral body profile functions as one, generating enough friction against stone to resist vigorous current.
Adult standard length is in the region of 1–1.5 in; total length including tail is only marginally greater, making this one of the smaller loaches in culture. The body is near-scaleless and very smooth to the touch — a characteristic shared across the Balitoridae that has direct implications for medication sensitivity. Colouration follows the typical Erromyzon pattern of a pale to olive-tan ground with a network of darker mottling or spots that provides camouflage on rock and gravel. An erectile suborbital spine is present, as in most cobitoid loaches; it is easily overlooked in a small, flat fish but can snag a net.
Habitat
Erromyzon yangi is endemic to fast, clear, cool tributaries of the Yangtze basin in Guangxi and Yunnan, southern China — two provinces that hold an exceptional diversity of small endemic stream fishes. The water in these hill streams is clean, well-oxygenated and distinctly cool relative to the lowland tropical streams that supply most aquarium fish: temperatures in the range of 66–75 °F are characteristic, with flow strong enough to maintain dissolved oxygen at or near saturation.
The substrate is primarily rock and boulder, often carpeted with diatoms, algae and biofilm — the same surface on which the fish feeds, rests and shelters. These are high-gradient, well-lit streams where sediment is minimal and water quality is consistently high. The fish is a stenotopic specialist: it does not tolerate still, warm, turbid or nutrient-enriched water, which explains both its rarity in the trade and the difficulty of keeping it long-term in a conventional aquarium.
Feeding
Erromyzon yangi is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer: it rasps diatoms, algae, microinvertebrates and organic films from the surface of rocks using a scraping mouth adapted for exactly that purpose. In its natural habitat those rock surfaces are constantly renewed by current-borne nutrients and light, keeping the biofilm thick and nutritious.
In the aquarium this feeding mode is both the key to husbandry and the most common reason the fish dies quietly and quickly. A tank that has been running for several months and has a visible growth of algae, diatoms and biofilm on rocks and glass will sustain the fish; a bare, newly set-up tank will not, no matter how much commercial food is added. The correct supplemental diet once biofilm is established consists of spirulina wafers and algae tablets, blanched greens (courgette, spinach, cucumber), and occasional small frozen foods such as daphnia or cyclops. Flake food is largely ignored and should not be relied upon.
Mating
Sexual dimorphism in Erromyzon yangi has not been formally documented in the available literature. In closely related hillstream genera, females are typically plumper-bodied when gravid, and some species show subtle differences in head width or pectoral-fin development, but these characters are difficult to read in small, flattened fish. Distinguishing sexes in captivity requires familiarity with the species that few keepers have had the opportunity to develop.
Nothing is known about courtship behaviour in this species. Hillstream loaches in general are tied to specific microhabitat features — rock surfaces, current patterns, water temperature — for reproductive activity, and the seasonal thermal and hydrological cues that trigger ripening in wild fish are essentially impossible to replicate in a tank. Attempting to breed this species would require a mature, strongly-flowing, cool hillstream setup with a large, well-colonised rock surface; even then, spawning cannot be expected with confidence.
Breeding
Erromyzon yangi has not, to the knowledge of available sources, been bred in home aquaria. Like most hillstream loaches it is presumed to be an egg-scatterer: ripe individuals would deposit small eggs among rocks and gravel in fast water, with no parental care. This is the reproductive mode documented for hillstream loaches where breeding has been observed — Sewellia lineolata, for instance, has been spawned in mature high-flow river tanks, with eggs dropped into crevices and among stones and left unguarded.
Whether Erromyzon yangi could be induced to spawn under similar conditions is unknown; no accounts in the English-language hobby literature document an attempt. Keepers should approach this fish as a display and observation species, not a breeding project, and should not expect success without considerable investment in the correct water conditions and tank age. As with the majority of specialist hillstream loaches, commercial supply — when the fish appears in trade at all — comes from wild collection in China, not from aquarium propagation.
In the aquarium
Erromyzon yangi is a genuinely demanding fish to keep well, and the demands are specific: high flow, cool temperature, excellent oxygen, and above all a mature tank. A purpose-built hillstream biotope — a long, shallow aquarium with a powerful powerhead or wavemaker creating turbulent, circular current over a deep layer of smooth river cobbles and boulders — is the correct setup. The water temperature should be held at 66–75 °F; at tropical aquarium temperatures of 79–82 °F, the fish declines rapidly as oxygen capacity drops and metabolic rate climbs. A single-species or dedicated hillstream community setup is strongly preferred over a general tropical community tank, which is typically too warm and too still.
The tank must be mature — ideally six months or more old — with a visible coating of algae and biofilm on the rocks before the fish is introduced. This is non-negotiable: many losses attributed to disease or stress are in fact slow starvation in a tank that looks clean to the keeper but offers nothing for the fish to eat. Supplement with spirulina wafers and blanched vegetables placed directly on the rocks.
Because the skin is near-scaleless, Erromyzon yangi is sensitive to copper-based medications and should receive no more than half the standard dose of any treatment, with close monitoring. It is not a schooling species in the strict sense but does better in small groups of three or more than kept alone, and multiple individuals allow natural behavioural expression. The fish is peaceful and can coexist with other cool-water, high-flow hillstream species; aggressive or fast-feeding tankmates will monopolise food and are not suitable.
Conservation
Erromyzon yangi has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; the available cache data records no completed assessment, and many narrow-range endemic Chinese stream loaches remain outside the assessment process due to data scarcity. We therefore record the species as Data Deficient in the spirit of the available information — its known range is limited to specific Yangtze tributaries in Guangxi and Yunnan, an inherently restricted footprint.
The freshwater fauna of southern China faces significant and well-documented pressure from habitat modification: river damming, riparian deforestation, agricultural run-off, sand extraction and urban water extraction all degrade the clear, fast, cool stream habitat this species requires. Because it appears rarely in the trade and there is no evidence of large-scale commercial collection, the aquarium industry is probably not a primary threat, but wild collection for the hobby adds incremental pressure on any population that is already confined to a narrow range. Responsible keepers who source this fish should seek captive-bred individuals where any exist, and be prepared to provide the specific care it needs rather than allowing it to decline through ignorance of its requirements.
