Erromyzon damingshanensis is a small hillstream loach described in 2017 from fast, shallow streams in the Pearl River drainage of Guangxi Province, southern China. Like all members of its genus it is a sucker-bodied torrent specialist whose flattened underside and broadened paired fins act as a hydraulic grip against the cobbles and boulders of swift, well-oxygenated water. Reaching perhaps 1.5–2.5 in in standard length, it is a delicate, range-restricted endemic that has attracted the interest of specialist keepers but demands conditions — cool temperatures, relentless current, and a mature biofilm surface to graze — that most community tanks cannot provide.

Taxonomy & naming

Erromyzon damingshanensis was formally described by Xiu and Yang in 2017, making it one of the more recently established species in a genus that has itself seen considerable taxonomic flux. The genus Erromyzon belongs to the family Balitoridae (gastromyzontid hillstream loaches), the sucker-bodied torrent fishes of South and East Asia.

Since its original description a reclassification has placed this species in the genus Bashimyzon as Bashimyzon damingshanensis, reflecting ongoing revision of the Gastromyzontidae based on morphological and molecular data. The Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — should be consulted for the current accepted combination; this article uses the original genus Erromyzon as described. The species epithet damingshanensis refers to Damingshan, the mountain massif in Guangxi from which the type series was collected.

Morphology

Erromyzon damingshanensis shares the hallmarks of the gastromyzontid body plan: a strongly flattened ventral profile, broadly spread paired fins and a muscular thoracic region that together form a suction surface against the substrate. The lips are thick and fleshy, well adapted for rasping biofilm and algae from rock. The body is slender above the attachment surface, tapering to a small caudal fin. Overall length in the genus runs to roughly 1.5–2.5 in standard length; the skin is effectively scaleless and the fish consequently sensitive to copper and harsh medications.

Exact colour pattern data for E. damingshanensis from the original description is limited in widely available sources; the closely related congeners show brownish or greyish dorsal patterning with fine spots or reticulations providing camouflage against cobble and gravel beds. Erromyzon species do not carry the erectile suborbital spine of botiid loaches, as they belong to an unrelated family, but they share the near-scaleless skin and the associated medication sensitivity.

Habitat

The type locality is a fast, shallow stream within the Pearl River drainage of Guangxi Province, southern China — the stream described as roughly 15–20 metres wide and only 0.3–0.7 metres deep, running over cobbles and boulders. Conditions at such sites are cool to moderate in temperature (the inferred range from congeners is approximately 64–75 °F), highly oxygenated, and characterised by strong year-round current. The water is clear and soft to slightly hard, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (around 6.0–7.5 inferred from related species in the same drainage).

As a rheophilic torrent specialist, Erromyzon damingshanensis is entirely dependent on high dissolved-oxygen levels maintained by turbulent flow. It lives among and beneath cobbles and boulders, where a thick mat of algae, diatoms and biofilm accumulates on exposed rock surfaces — the primary food resource. Still or slow-moving backwaters are physiologically unsuitable: without current these fish suffocate and, without mature biofilm, starve.

Feeding

Erromyzon damingshanensis is an aufwuchs or biofilm grazer. In nature it rasps diatoms, green algae, cyanobacteria and the associated microfauna — mites, tiny worms, protozoa — from the surfaces of cobbles and boulders in fast water. The fleshy, scraping lips are the morphological expression of this lifestyle.

In the aquarium, feeding this species demands that the keeper first establish the food supply rather than deliver it: a mature tank with algae- and biofilm-covered rocks is the prerequisite, and a newly set-up bare tank will starve the fish regardless of what is dropped in from above. Once biofilm is established, the diet can be supplemented with algae wafers, spirulina-based tabs, and small frozen or live invertebrate foods such as baby brine shrimp, Daphnia and fine bloodworm. The fish will not thrive on standard flake or pellet diets alone. Frequent feeding of small amounts, combined with sufficient light to sustain algal growth on the rocks, is the practical approach.

Mating

No mating behaviour has been documented for Erromyzon damingshanensis in the wild or in captivity, and data for the genus as a whole are sparse. In related hillstream loaches (Gastromyzon, Sewellia and their allies), females are generally somewhat fuller-bodied when in spawning condition, making sex determination possible only in mature, well-fed fish; males may be slightly slimmer. Beyond body depth there is no obvious sexual dimorphism reported in Erromyzon.

In hillstream loach genera for which spawning has been observed — most notably Sewellia lineolata — males defend small patch territories on rock surfaces and display to females by lateral posturing. Spawning itself appears to involve the pair pressing together against a rock or gravel surface while eggs are deposited and fertilised. Whether Erromyzon follows the same pattern is unknown; the behaviour is inferred from the group rather than directly observed.

Breeding

Erromyzon damingshanensis has not been bred in captivity, and the genus has no documented aquarium-breeding history in widely available sources. This is the honest picture for the great majority of hillstream loach genera: while a few (Sewellia lineolata is the clearest example) have been spawned in mature, strongly-flowing river-style aquaria with no parental care, most genera have never been bred outside specialist programmes. A few hillstream species scatter eggs among fine gravel or against smooth rock surfaces; no parental care of the eggs or fry is known in the family.

For keepers hoping to attempt breeding, the prerequisites would follow what is known for related species: a very well-established, biofilm-rich tank with powerful current, cool temperatures, and a conditioned group of adults. A seasonal change in temperature or flow rate may serve as a spawning trigger, as it does in temperate-zone hillstream loaches. No aquarium-produced offspring are commercially available; any fish in the trade will have been wild-collected.

In the aquarium

Erromyzon damingshanensis is a specialist fish suited to an experienced keeper who can replicate the physical demands of a fast Guangxi mountain stream. The non-negotiables are: strong, directional flow from one or more powerheads or a river manifold, high dissolved oxygen, cool water (the 64–75 °F range inferred from congeners means a heated tropical tank at 79–82 °F is too warm), and a tank that has been running long enough to establish genuine biofilm on rocks and glass surfaces — six months at minimum, a year or more ideally. A bare, new tank will kill this fish through starvation rather than disease.

The tank itself should be furnished with smooth and rough cobbles, flat stones and slate to recreate the streambed, with current directed across the rocks. Sand between stones gives the fish a natural substrate. Near-scaleless skin makes this and related hillstream loaches sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of standard treatments; any medication should be used at half-dose or less, with careful observation. The fish appreciate the company of their own or related species; a group of three to six is preferable to a singleton. They are peaceful grazers that coexist with small, fast-water-adapted tankmates, though tankmates from still, warm water make poor companions given the divergent environmental needs.

Conservation

Erromyzon damingshanensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List, most likely because it was described only in 2017 and the species is too recently named to have passed through a formal Red List evaluation cycle. It is recorded as Not Evaluated (NE) here; no published assessment exists.

The species is a range-restricted endemic known only from a single drainage system within Guangxi Province. Narrow endemics of this type — confined to one river catchment, dependent on fast, clear, cool and unpolluted water — are inherently vulnerable to habitat degradation: siltation from hillside agriculture, water extraction, and small-scale hydroelectric development on the streams of southern China are the credible threats. Until a formal assessment is completed, the precautionary inference is that any deterioration in Pearl River headwater habitat disproportionately affects species with no other range. Any wild-collected individuals in the aquarium trade should be regarded with that conservation context in mind.
