Gastromyzon crenastus is a miniature hillstream loach from the fast, cold hill streams of southern Sarawak, Borneo — and one of the smallest members of its genus, barely reaching 1 in in standard length. Like all Gastromyzon it is built for life in torrential water: its flattened body and broadened paired fins form a living sucker that pins the fish to bare rock in currents that would tumble anything less specialised. It grazes biofilm and diatoms directly off the stone surface, and outside that narrow niche it fares poorly. Described only in 2006, it is already assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to its restricted range and the rapid degradation of the southern Sarawak uplands by logging and forest clearance.

Taxonomy & naming

Gastromyzon crenastus was formally described in 2006 by Heok Hee Tan and Charles Leh in the journal Zootaxa (volume 1126), alongside two further new Gastromyzon species from southern Sarawak: G. punctulatus and G. cornusaccus. The description was based on specimens from the Padawan area of southwestern Sarawak, on the Malay Peninsula side of Borneo's interior plateau.

Gastromyzon belongs to the family Balitoridae, the hillstream or torrent loaches of South and Southeast Asia. The genus name combines the Greek gastro- (belly) and myzon (to suck), describing the ventral sucker formed by the modified pectoral and pelvic fins — an adaptation shared across the hillstream loach radiation. No synonyms or genus transfers are recorded; the original combination remains current in the Catalog of Fishes. The species has no established common or trade name.

Morphology

Gastromyzon crenastus is the smallest known species in its genus, with a maximum recorded standard length of 1 in (roughly 1 in). The body is strongly dorsoventrally flattened — broad and pancake-like at the front, tapering behind — and the broad, horizontal pectoral and pelvic fins are held flat against the substrate, forming the sucker complex that anchors the fish in current.

Coloration is dark, the body largely black or very dark brown, crossed by six to eight pale bars on the dorsum and overlaid with irregular cream spots and blotches on the head. This pattern, combined with the tiny size, distinguishes it from its Sarawak congeners. The skin carries the reduced, deeply embedded scaling typical of balitorids, which gives it a smooth texture and makes it susceptible to lipid-soluble medications and copper compounds. No erectile suborbital spine is present in Gastromyzon — this feature is characteristic of botiid loaches (Botia and relatives), not of the hillstream family.

Habitat

Gastromyzon crenastus is endemic to southern Sarawak, Borneo, where it occupies fast-flowing, rocky hill streams in the Padawan region and surrounding uplands. Flow rates in occupied reaches are high — between roughly 0.65 and 3.7 cubic metres per second — and dissolved oxygen concentrations are correspondingly elevated, remaining at or above 7.5 mg/L. The water is very soft (hardness below 2 °GH), with pH spanning a slightly acidic to neutral range of 6.5–8.0, and is kept cold by altitude and shade, ranging from approximately 68–75 °F.

The substrate in occupied stream sections is bedrock, cobble and boulder, surfaces that accumulate the periphytic algae and diatom mats on which the fish depends. Clear, sunlit, well-aerated riffles and runs with good light penetration support the most productive biofilm growth, and the species is strongly attached to these microhabitats. This is not a fish of sluggish lowland or lentic waters; it is a specialist of the hill-torrent zone.

Feeding

Gastromyzon crenastus is an aufwuchs grazer — it uses the hard, tooth-like structures in its subterminal mouth to rasp algae, diatoms, bacterial films and fine organic matter directly from the surface of rocks. In high-flow, sunlit stream sections this biofilm can accumulate rapidly on bare stone, and the fish's entire daily routine revolves around working from surface to surface, grazing it down.

In the aquarium, this feeding ecology sets the minimum viable conditions: a tank without a mature, algae- and biofilm-covered rockscape cannot feed this fish, and a recently set up aquarium with clean glass and bare stones is essentially a slow starvation cell. The diet can be supplemented with algae wafers, spirulina-enriched foods, blanched green vegetables and small live or frozen items such as daphnia and brine shrimp, but these supplements work alongside a living biofilm layer, not as a substitute for it. High-protein diets are best avoided or kept to a minor fraction of the diet.

Mating

Virtually nothing is documented about the mating behaviour of Gastromyzon crenastus specifically, and detailed reproductive studies of the genus as a whole are scarce. On the basis of hillstream loach biology generally, both sexes are presumed to inhabit the same rocky torrent microhabitat, with mature females likely recognisable by a rounder, deeper belly profile when in spawning condition.

A few related hillstream genera — most notably Sewellia lineolata from Vietnam — have been observed and bred in mature, strongly-flowing river-style aquaria. It is possible that similarly conditioned setups could elicit spawning behaviour in Gastromyzon, but no confirmed aquarium spawning of G. crenastus is documented in the available literature.

Breeding

Gastromyzon crenastus has not been bred in the aquarium with any documented regularity. Like other hillstream loaches it is an egg-scatterer with no parental care: eggs are deposited among stones or in interstitial gravel spaces in fast water, and the adults play no further role after spawning. Unlike botiid loaches, no seasonal flood migration or hormone-farm production is recorded — specimens in the trade, where they appear at all, are presumed to be wild-collected from Sarawak.

For most hillstream genera, home breeding remains a rare event even for experienced keepers. The honest baseline here is that this species is not regularly bred in aquaria. Anyone wishing to attempt it would need to replicate the natural conditions closely: very clean, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated, cool water over a mature, algae-covered rock bed, combined with the patient establishment of a stable, species-appropriate biofilm community. Whether that is sufficient for G. crenastus remains unknown.

In the aquarium

Gastromyzon crenastus is a challenging specialist, suited to the experienced keeper willing to commit to the specific conditions it demands. The tank must be designed around flow: a powerful return pump or powerhead producing a brisk, turbulent current across a rocky bed is not optional but the core requirement. Without high oxygenation and vigorous circulation the fish becomes lethargic and eventually suffocates; without a mature, biofilm-covered rockscape it starves. New aquaria are not suitable — allow six months or more of biological maturation, with good light to encourage algal colonisation of the substrate rocks, before adding this species.

Water should be cool (68–75 °F), very soft (under 2 °GH) and slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.5–8.0), closely matching the chemistry of its native Sarawak streams. Because the skin is smooth and the scales reduced, Gastromyzon crenastus is sensitive to copper-based treatments and to full-strength doses of many aquarium medications; medicate at half dose with careful, gentle products only, and quarantine any new fish before introducing them. The species is reported to be peaceable toward its own kind and toward other small hillstream loaches, and a group of three or more gives more natural behaviour than a singleton. Given its tiny adult size (under 1 in), it is prey or competition for most larger tankmates; a species-appropriate hillstream biotope setup is the safest context.

Conservation

Gastromyzon crenastus is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 10 January 2019), under criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii)+2ab(i,ii,iii). The assessment reflects both the species' restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy within southern Sarawak, and the continuing decline in the quality, extent and connectivity of its stream habitat caused by logging operations, land clearance and infrastructure development across the Padawan uplands and surrounding areas.

As an endemic of a single upland region within a rapidly changing landscape, G. crenastus has limited capacity to recolonise lost habitat or to buffer local population losses through immigration from unaffected streams. Sarawak's hill-stream fish fauna as a whole is poorly inventoried, and the species was only formally described in 2006; population trend data are correspondingly thin. Continued forest conversion and sedimentation of stream channels represent the primary ongoing threats. Any aquarium trade in wild-caught specimens — which is where the trade supply would originate — adds a further pressure on a naturally small-ranged species whose wild populations are already considered at risk.
