Taxonomy & naming
Gastromyzon auronigrus was described by Heok Hui Tan in 2006 from specimens collected in the Sungai Kinarom, a stream draining into Marudu Bay in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. It belongs to the family Balitoridae and the genus Gastromyzon — the Bornean torrent loaches — a group of dorsoventrally flattened hillstream loaches endemic to Borneo and closely allied Sundaland island streams. The Catalog of Fishes lists the current valid combination as Gastromyzon auronigrus Tan, 2006, and no synonyms are recorded.
Within Gastromyzon, the genus has been subject to ongoing revision as additional species have been described from Borneo's diverse stream systems. The genus is large and all its members share the distinctive torrent-specialist body plan. Gastromyzon auronigrus sits firmly within the group on the strength of its morphology and type locality; no subspecies or population-level variants are formally recognised.
Morphology
Gastromyzon auronigrus reaches about 2 in in standard length — a modest size typical of the genus. The body is strongly dorsoventrally flattened, the paired fins broad and horizontally oriented, creating the suction-disc-like profile that allows the fish to cling to smooth rock surfaces in torrential current. This is not a modified sucker in the anatomical sense but an elegant result of fin geometry and negative pressure: the fish presses its flat underside against the substrate and its pectoral and pelvic fins spread to grip.
Coloration is the species' most distinctive character. The ground colour is deep black, overlaid on the head by a fine gold reticulate (net-like) pattern and on the dorsum by a series of thin gold transverse bars — a pattern striking enough to warrant both the trade name Gold Net Hillstream Loach and the Latin epithet auronigrus. The skin is nearly scaleless, as in most hillstream loaches, leaving it sensitive to copper-based medications and harsh chemical treatments. Unlike the botiid loaches, Gastromyzon species do not carry a suborbital spine, so handling risk is limited to the fish's needs rather than its weaponry.
Habitat
The type locality of Gastromyzon auronigrus is the Sungai Kinarom, a clear, fast-flowing stream draining into Marudu Bay in Sabah, the Malaysian part of northern Borneo. The species is a rheophile — a current-loving, fast-water specialist — whose entire morphology is a commitment to life on smooth, exposed rock in stream sections where few other fish can maintain position.
The natural environment is cool, clear, highly oxygenated hill stream water with minimal suspended sediment. Dissolved oxygen levels are high as a direct consequence of turbulent mixing, and water temperatures in elevated Bornean stream habitats typically fall in the range of approximately 64–75 °F — notably cooler than the tropical lowland rivers most aquarists associate with Borneo. The substrate is smooth rock and boulders colonised by biofilm, algae and aufwuchs; bare sand is incidental, and fine sediment is largely absent from the current-swept sections this fish inhabits.
Feeding
Gastromyzon auronigrus is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer: in the wild it rasps algae, diatoms, microorganisms and organic detritus from the surface of smooth rocks in fast-flowing water. Its trophic level (approximately 2.2 on the FishBase scale) confirms a diet dominated by plant material and microorganisms rather than invertebrate prey, though small fauna embedded in biofilm are certainly consumed incidentally.
This dietary specialisation is the axis around which aquarium keeping of this species turns. Without a mature, algae- and biofilm-covered rockscape, the fish simply has nothing to graze and will starve — slowly and often without obvious symptoms until it is too late. Supplementing with blanched greens (zucchini, spinach, cucumber), high-quality algae wafers and small frozen foods such as daphnia and cyclops helps, but these supplements only complement a living biofilm surface; they cannot replace it. Gastromyzon auronigrus is emphatically not a generic algae eater and not a fish that will thrive on flake food alone.
Mating
Sexing Gastromyzon auronigrus in the aquarium has not been formally documented. In related hillstream loaches, females tend to be broader-bodied and deeper in the abdomen when gravid, and males may be slimmer, but these differences are subtle and difficult to read on a fish pressed flat against a rock surface. No reliable external dimorphism has been established for this species.
In closely related Gastromyzon and other Bornean hillstream loaches, it is presumed that spawning is triggered by seasonal conditions — shifting water temperature, flow intensity and day length associated with the stream's natural annual cycle. Whether the species undertakes any form of courtship display or territoriality around spawning time is not recorded. The extreme rarity of captive reproduction across the genus means this part of the biology remains essentially undescribed.
Breeding
Gastromyzon auronigrus has not been bred in captivity, and no verified aquarium spawnings are on record. This is the honest picture for the species and for the genus as a whole: like the majority of hillstream loaches, Gastromyzon spp. have proven extraordinarily difficult to induce to spawn under home conditions, even in tanks that are otherwise suitable.
The few hillstream loach genera that do occasionally reproduce in a home aquarium — most notably certain Sewellia — do so in mature, strongly-flowing river tanks with well-developed biofilm, stable cool temperatures and closely simulated seasonal cues. Gastromyzon shows no such established pattern. The fish is an egg-scatterer with no parental care: eggs are deposited among stones or within gravel in fast water, and adults take no further role in their development. Keepers should buy this species expecting to maintain it well, not to breed it.
In the aquarium
Gastromyzon auronigrus is a rewarding but unforgiving fish for the aquarist prepared to meet its specific requirements. The non-negotiable baseline is flow: the tank must have sustained, powerful, unidirectional current — a turnover of 10–15 times the tank volume per hour is the figure most authorities cite — delivered through a flow pump or wavemaker directed across an arrangement of smooth rocks. Without this, the fish cannot feed properly, oxygen levels drop to dangerous levels, and the fish declines.
Water must be cool (61–75 °F), clean and highly oxygenated. A mature tank with established biofilm on its rock surfaces is essential — the fish should not be introduced to a new setup. Water quality must be consistent; hillstream loaches are intolerant of elevated nitrates and sensitive to the parameter swings that an immature system produces. The near-scaleless skin makes Gastromyzon auronigrus sensitive to copper and to full-strength doses of most medications, so half-doses and copper-free treatments should be used if disease treatment is ever necessary. Keep a group of three or more to reduce stress, as the species is peaceful and benefits from conspecific company. A minimum tank of around 23.5–31.5 in in length gives enough rock surface and flow path for a small group to thrive.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Gastromyzon auronigrus as Near Threatened (NT) in 2018 under criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii)+2ab(i,ii,iii), reflecting its restricted geographic range as a Bornean endemic with specialised habitat requirements. The NT rating indicates the species does not currently meet the threshold for a threatened category but warrants attention given the combination of limited extent of occurrence, continued habitat pressure and specialist ecology.
The principal conservation concern is the degradation and loss of clear, fast-flowing stream habitat in Sabah and across Borneo more broadly. Deforestation — for palm oil, timber and smallholder agriculture — destabilises stream catchments, increases sedimentation, raises water temperatures and reduces the dissolved oxygen levels that a torrent specialist like this fish depends upon absolutely. A stream that silts over or warms by a few degrees loses its hillstream loach community quickly. The aquarium trade draws on wild-collected specimens, as captive breeding is not established, which adds a further pressure in combination with habitat loss. The species' status should be monitored as habitat assessments for Sabah's hill streams are updated.
