Gastromyzon aequabilis is a small, disc-bodied hillstream loach endemic to the Kuamut drainage of the Kinabatangan River in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo — one of dozens of similarly shaped Gastromyzon species that spend their lives clinging to smooth boulders in cool, rushing highland streams. Its paired pectoral and pelvic fins fuse into a muscular suction surface, letting it hold station in torrents where no ordinary fish could linger. In the aquarium it is a specialist that rewards patience and preparation: it needs fast, cold, oxygen-saturated water, a mature rockscape thick with biofilm, and the company of its own kind. Put it in a warm, bare, still tank and it starves and suffocates within weeks — yet in a purpose-built river setup it is a long-lived, fascinating grazer.

Taxonomy & naming

Gastromyzon aequabilis was described by Heok Hui Tan in 2006 in his monographic revision of the Bornean torrent loaches, 'The Borneo suckers: Revision of the Torrent Loaches of Borneo (Balitoridae: Gastromyzon)'. That work reorganised the genus substantially, and G. aequabilis is placed within the Gastromyzon danumensis species group — a cluster of closely related, narrowly distributed endemics from the rivers of Sabah and Sarawak.

The family placement is Balitoridae, a large Asian family of hillstream and river loaches that includes the torrent loaches of Sundaland and the Indochina region. Within Cobitoidea the family has been rearranged several times, but the genus Gastromyzon has remained stable. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid combination Gastromyzon aequabilis Tan, 2006.

Morphology

Like all Gastromyzon, G. aequabilis is a small, strongly depressed loach — flattened top-to-bottom rather than laterally compressed, with a broad head and a body that tapers gradually to a short caudal peduncle. The paired fins radiate outward from the ventral surface and, working together with the flattened belly, create the suction effect that anchors the fish to exposed rock faces in fast current. Adult length reaches approximately 2–2.5 in total length, a compact size appropriate to the swift, shallow stream habitats it occupies.

The dorsal surface is mottled in shades of brown, tan and olive, providing camouflage against the rock and sediment of its native torrent floor. The ventral surface is pale. As a balitorid it lacks the prominent suborbital spine found in botiid loaches, but like many of its relatives it has reduced scalation — the skin is smooth and thin, which means it absorbs dissolved substances rapidly and must be treated with caution around medications and water additives.

Habitat

Gastromyzon aequabilis is restricted to the Kuamut drainage of the Kinabatangan River system in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo — a geographically narrow range typical of the genus. It inhabits swift, shallow hill streams and torrent zones from near sea level up to about 1,1148 ft elevation, where water is clear, cold by tropical standards, and saturated with dissolved oxygen from constant turbulence over rock.

The substrate in these habitats is dominated by smooth boulders and cobble swept clean of sediment by current. Biofilm — a living mat of benthic algae, diatoms and associated microorganisms — coats every exposed rock surface and constitutes the food source on which this fish depends. Water chemistry is generally circumneutral to mildly alkaline (pH 7.0–7.8), soft to moderately hard, and cool: temperatures of 64–77 °F (64–77 °F) are typical, with the upper end of that range already stressful because warmer water holds less oxygen. Exposure to warm, still or low-flow water in captivity rapidly compromises gill function.

Feeding

Gastromyzon aequabilis is an obligate aufwuchs grazer. In its native streams it rasps biofilm — benthic algae, diatoms and the bacterial films that coat them — directly from rock surfaces with its downward-pointing mouth. There is no meaningful alternative food source in the torrents it inhabits; it has evolved entirely around this single feeding strategy.

In the aquarium, replicating this diet requires a mature tank with an established, visible biofilm on every exposed rock surface — this takes weeks or months to develop and is the single most important factor in keeping this species alive. A newly set-up tank with clean, algae-free rocks will not sustain it. Supplementary foods that work include algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets and tablets, and occasional small frozen offerings such as bloodworm or mosquito larvae; high-protein foods should be offered sparingly as excessive protein causes internal problems. The fish that starves most readily in the aquarium is a Gastromyzon placed in a bare or immature tank — this is the leading cause of loss in the hobby.

Mating

Sexual dimorphism in Gastromyzon aequabilis is subtle and not well documented for this species specifically. Across the genus, ripe females are generally rounder-bodied and broader when viewed from above, while males may show slight differences in snout profile or fin ray structure, but separating the sexes with confidence requires close examination of conditioned adults. As a social species found in clusters in the wild, keeping a group of four or more individuals gives the best chance of having both sexes represented.

Spawning behaviour in the Gastromyzon complex has been observed in captivity in related species: males clear small hollows at the base of smooth stones, apparently advertising and defending these sites, with females visiting to deposit eggs. Whether G. aequabilis follows the same pattern is not documented in the literature, but it is reasonable to assume similar behaviour given its close relationship to other Gastromyzon for which spawning records exist.

Breeding

Gastromyzon aequabilis is rarely, if ever, bred in the home aquarium. Like most hillstream loaches it is an egg-scatterer with no documented parental care: eggs are deposited among or beneath stones in fast water, and the adults play no further role. The few captive breeding accounts for the Gastromyzon genus describe a demanding protocol — a mature river-manifold or double-bottom aquarium providing powerful, oxygenated flow over smooth rock; conditioning on rich live and frozen foods over eight or more weeks; and a thermal trigger (a gradual temperature rise followed by a cool water change) to simulate seasonal change.

For most keepers, G. aequabilis is a fish to be enjoyed as a display animal rather than a breeding project. Wild-caught individuals account for the trade supply, which is another reason to provide optimal conditions and minimise stress-driven losses. If spawning is a goal, invest heavily in the river-tank infrastructure first: no amount of water-chemistry tweaking compensates for inadequate flow, inadequate biofilm, or too-warm water.

In the aquarium

A Gastromyzon aequabilis tank is, first and last, a river tank. The nonnegotiable requirement is high water velocity — filter and powerhead turnover of 10–15 times the tank volume per hour, arranged to sweep across a broad rock face rather than through a single pipe. Standard canister or hang-on filters produce nowhere near enough flow, and an undersized or still tank is incompatible with this species. Equally important is water temperature: keep it between 18 and 75 °F (64–75 °F); above 77 °F the oxygen content of the water drops toward the threshold that causes respiratory distress, and sustained warmth is a slow death sentence for this fish.

The rockscape must be mature. Set the aquarium up months before the fish arrive and allow biofilm to develop on every surface before introducing them. A minimum group of four specimens reduces stress and reflects the clustered social structure the fish shows in the wild; single specimens are more prone to decline. Because the skin is thin and medication-absorbent, treat any disease cautiously — copper-based treatments and full-strength doses of many medications are dangerous, so use half-doses and copper-free alternatives where possible. Watch feeding closely: if the biofilm supply is exhausted before it can regrow, supplement daily with algae wafers placed directly on the rocks, and assess whether the tank can sustain the number of grazers in it. This is a specialist fish for a keeper who has done the preparation — but a well-run river tank with a healthy colony of G. aequabilis is among the most visually compelling setups in the freshwater hobby.

Conservation

Gastromyzon aequabilis is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in December 2018. The assessment reflects the species' very restricted range — confined to the Kuamut drainage of the Kinabatangan River in Sabah — and the pressures acting on lowland and hill-stream habitats across Malaysian Borneo: deforestation for palm oil and timber, stream sedimentation from agricultural and logging runoff, and water abstraction. These factors degrade the clear, fast-flowing, biofilm-rich habitat on which torrent loaches depend.

The IUCN notes that detailed distributional, taxonomic and ecological data remain limited for most Gastromyzon species, which makes refined threat assessment difficult. G. aequabilis enters the aquarium trade as a wild-caught animal; the low reproductive rate in captivity and limited availability of tank-bred stock mean that trade demand draws entirely on wild populations. Buyers are encouraged to source fish from reputable importers who work with responsible collectors, and to prioritise keeping conditions that maximise longevity and reduce replacement demand.
