Taxonomy & naming
Gastromyzon stellatus was described by Heok Hee Tan in 2006 from material collected at Sungai Petiak in the Bau area of Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, which serves as the type locality. The genus Gastromyzon belongs to the family Balitoridae — the hillstream loaches or torrent loaches — a predominantly Asian group characterised by the extreme dorsoventral flattening that allows these fish to anchor themselves against current on bare rock. Gastromyzon itself is well represented in Borneo, with numerous species occupying the island's hill-stream drainages.
The species epithet stellatus is Latin for 'starred' or 'starry', a reference to the spotted patterning across the body and fins; spot configuration varies enough among individuals that it was one of the characters Tan used to distinguish this species from related congeners. The GBIF taxonomic backbone confirms the authority as Tan, 2006. As with much of Bornean ichthyofauna, no junior synonyms are currently recognised for this species.
Morphology
Like all gastromyzontids, G. stellatus has a body built for one purpose: resisting current on smooth or irregular rock. The head and abdomen are broadly flattened, the paired pectoral and pelvic fins are oriented horizontally so that they lie flush against the substrate, and the pelvic fins are fused at the midline to form a functional suction disc — not a true sucker in the anatomical sense, but a cupped surface that creates negative pressure against stone. The overall silhouette from above is roughly oval, tapering to a slender caudal peduncle.
Adults measure 2 in standard length. The body is a pale to mid-brown base colour marked with a variable constellation of darker spots and blotches across the dorsal surface, flanks and unpaired fins — the pattern from which the name stellatus is drawn. Spot arrangement is individual enough to recognise fish within a group. The skin is effectively naked to the touch: scale cover is minimal, a feature shared across Balitoridae and one with direct implications for medication sensitivity. There is no erectile suborbital spine as in the botiid loaches; Balitoridae do not carry that structure.
Habitat
Gastromyzon stellatus is a strict endemic of southern Sarawak, confined to the Sadong and Lupar River basins in Malaysian Borneo. It inhabits exposed riffles, runs and cascade faces — the sections of stream where flow is fastest, depth is shallow, and the substrate is boulders and smooth cobble swept free of silt. Water here is clear, cold by equatorial standards (typically 68–75 °F), and saturated with dissolved oxygen driven in by aeration over rock. Aquatic vegetation is absent; the available food is the thin layer of algae, diatoms, periphyton and micro-organisms — aufwuchs, or biofilm — that coats every stable surface.
The fish exist in loose aggregations in nature, foraging over the same rock faces in proximity to one another, a social arrangement that matters when planning aquarium groups. The Bau area drainages where G. stellatus occurs are hill-stream systems draining the Borneo interior, with water that is soft, near-neutral to slightly acidic (pH approximately 6.0–7.5), and subject to seasonal variation in flow but consistently fast for most of the year.
Feeding
Gastromyzon stellatus is an aufwuchs grazer — it rasps the thin mat of algae, diatoms, biofilm and associated micro-organisms from rock surfaces using its ventrally-positioned mouth. In the wild this biofilm is its primary and essentially its only food; it is not a predator of invertebrates and does not browse macroalgae in the way a pleco might.
In captivity this diet must be replicated as closely as possible. The most important single element is a tank old enough to have developed a dense, continuous biofilm across its rocks — a newly set-up aquarium is a death sentence for this species, because there is nothing to eat. Once a biofilm base is established, the diet can be supplemented with sinking algae wafers, gelatin-bound vegetable foods, blanched greens such as spinach or kale, and small amounts of frozen bloodworm or mysis offered sparingly. The key warning from Seriously Fish is emphatic: a high-protein diet appears to cause internal problems in G. stellatus and should be avoided. The fish is not a flake-eater and does not compete well for free-floating food; targeted bottom feeding on encrusted surfaces is its natural mode.
Mating
Almost nothing is documented about the mating behaviour of Gastromyzon stellatus in the wild, and the species has not been observed spawning in captivity. In related hillstream loaches and in the broader Balitoridae, sexual dimorphism is typically subtle or absent externally, making it difficult to sex fish without close inspection. Some sources report that females of similar species may be slightly plumper-bodied when in breeding condition, but no reliable external character has been established for G. stellatus itself.
In wild torrent environments, where hillstream loaches spawn, the relevant cues are likely tied to seasonal shifts in flow, water temperature and water level. The cool, fast conditions preferred by G. stellatus suggest that any spawning trigger would be correspondingly difficult to replicate in a home tank, as the conditions required depart significantly from what most aquarium setups provide.
Breeding
Gastromyzon stellatus has not been bred in captivity, and this is the honest and complete picture for this species. It is a hillstream loach and, like the vast majority of its family, it scatters eggs among stones and gravel in fast-flowing water with no parental care — the eggs are deposited and the adults take no further interest. A small number of hillstream loaches, most notably Sewellia lineolata from Vietnam, have been spawned in mature, strongly-flowing river tanks in the hobby, with pairs depositing eggs in crevices between smooth pebbles, but this represents the exception rather than the rule across Balitoridae.
For G. stellatus specifically, the combination of its specialised cool-water, high-flow requirements, its restricted natural range, and its rarity in the trade means that the conditions and numbers of fish needed even to attempt breeding are rarely assembled. Keepers should acquire this species to maintain and enjoy, not with breeding as a realistic expectation.
In the aquarium
Gastromyzon stellatus is an advanced-keeper fish, and the gap between the conditions it actually needs and the conditions it is most often given is wide enough to kill it quickly. The core requirements are non-negotiable: cool water (68–75 °F), extremely high flow (10–15× tank volume per hour from the filter alone, supplemented with powerheads or a circulation pump directed across the rocks), and water that is near-saturated with dissolved oxygen at all times. A standard tropical community tank at 79–82 °F with moderate filtration is not appropriate; the fish will decline.
The tank should be mature — ideally several months old — with a dense, continuous biofilm colonising all rock and glass surfaces. This is the food supply, and without it the fish starve even when offered supplemental foods. Use smooth boulders, rounded cobbles and flat stones that give large grazing surfaces and physical purchase for the suction disc; harsh or sharp gravel is unsuitable. A group of at least three to five fish is recommended, as these are social animals that live in aggregations in nature. Because the skin is near-scaleless, G. stellatus is sensitive to copper-based medications and should be dosed carefully if treatment is ever needed; fish are also highly sensitive to deteriorating water quality, making regular water changes and a reliable filtration regime essential.
Bright light over a mature rock setup promotes biofilm growth and benefits the fish. Do not keep G. stellatus with aggressive or fast-moving species that compete for food or disturb the fish on the substrate; peaceful nano-fish or other calm hillstream species at similar temperature requirements are the best companions.
Conservation
Gastromyzon stellatus is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated January 2019. The evaluation was made under criterion B1ab(iii) — a restricted extent of occurrence combined with observed or projected decline in habitat quality. The species is endemic to the Sadong and Lupar River basins in southern Sarawak, a range so small that any significant habitat degradation within those drainages affects the entire known population.
The threats facing hill-stream endemics in Borneo are well documented: logging and plantation agriculture on steep catchments deliver sediment loads that smother the boulder substrate and cloud the clear water that species like G. stellatus depend on; gravel extraction from stream beds directly destroys the riffles and cascade faces that constitute the habitat; and lowland stream conversion for rice and palm oil alters hydrology throughout the catchment. The aquarium trade in G. stellatus draws on wild-caught individuals — the species has not been bred commercially — which adds a modest but non-trivial collection pressure to a population that is already range-restricted. Conservation of the Bau-area hill streams and their catchments is the most meaningful action available for this species.
