Taxonomy & naming
Hemimyzon indicus was formally described in 2018 by Lalramliana, Solo, Lalronunga and Lalnuntluanga, making it one of the more recently named members of the genus. Its description represented the first confirmed occurrence of Hemimyzon in India; the genus had previously been known only from southern China and Indochina. The holotype specimen measured approximately 1.5 in standard length and was collected from the Kaladan River basin in Saiha District, Mizoram, in the far northeast of India — a river system that drains west into Myanmar and ultimately the Bay of Bengal.
The species is placed in the family Balitoridae, the river and hillstream loaches, a diverse family of Cobitoidea distributed across South and Southeast Asia. Within the family, Hemimyzon belongs to a clade of flattened, torrent-adapted loaches that have evolved a ventral sucker — formed by the fused pectoral and pelvic fin bases — to maintain position in fast water. The species epithet indicus refers simply to India, the country where it was discovered. The Catalog of Fishes lists the combination as Hemimyzon indicus Lalramliana, Solo, Lalronunga & Lalnuntluanga, 2018.
Diagnostic characters separating it from congeners include two simple (unbranched) rays in the pelvic fin and 65–67 lateral-line scales — features used in the original description to distinguish it from the closely related H. nanensis and other species in the genus. As a recently described fish it has not yet been revised or synonymised.
Morphology
Hemimyzon indicus is a small, dorsoventrally flattened loach reaching around 1.5 in standard length — a modest size even among hillstream loaches. Its body is strongly depressed (flattened top to bottom), tapering from a broad, disc-like anterior region to a narrow, rounded tail. The underside of the fish acts as a ventral sucker: the pectoral fins are splayed laterally and lie flat against rock surfaces, and the pelvic fins are positioned far forward, together forming a friction surface that resists dislodgement in torrential current.
The skin is near-scaleless in the conventional sense; the lateral line carries 65–67 scales, a diagnostic character, but the body is otherwise smooth and the integument lacks the obvious scaling of cyprinids. This thin, unprotected skin makes the species sensitive to copper-based medications and other chemical treatments, as with hillstream loaches generally. The head is depressed and broad, bearing a subterminal to inferior mouth adapted for rasping biofilm from rock — not a suctorial disc like a pleco, but a fleshy-lipped scraping mouth. Colouration in life is not fully documented in the literature, but the genus typically shows a mottled brown or olive pattern that provides camouflage against rock and gravel substrates.
Habitat
The type locality is the Kaladan River basin (also referred to as the Kolodyne River) in Saiha District, Mizoram, in the hill tracts of northeast India, near the border with Myanmar. This is a region of steep, forested river valleys draining a geologically active zone of the eastern Himalayas; the streams are clear, cool, well-oxygenated, and fast-flowing, with rocky substrates colonised by biofilm, algae and diatoms. Seasonal variation in flow and temperature follows the monsoon cycle of the region.
As a hillstream loach of the Balitoridae, H. indicus is a specialist of the torrent zone — the shallow, high-velocity reaches over rock and boulder where water is maximally oxygenated. These conditions are fundamentally different from the warm, slow-moving or standing water of most tropical aquaria; the species is adapted to cool water with dissolved oxygen near saturation and a continuous, strong current. It shares this habitat type with other rheophilic loaches and torrent-zone gobies but occupies a distinct ecological niche as a benthic biofilm grazer on exposed rock surfaces.
Feeding
Hemimyzon indicus is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. In its natural habitat it rasps algae, diatoms, micro-organisms and organic detritus from the surfaces of rocks and boulders in fast-flowing water — the dietary guild known as aufwuchs (German: "growth upon"). This feeding mode is highly specialised: the fish needs a continuous supply of mature biofilm growing on submerged rock, and it is not capable of switching to open-water particle feeding or surviving on commercial flake food alone.
In aquarium care, the single most important feeding consideration is that the tank must be mature enough to have developed a meaningful coat of biofilm on rocks, glass and hardscape before this fish is introduced. A bare or newly-cycled aquarium will not sustain it. Supplementary foods appropriate for hillstream loaches include sinking algae wafers, Repashy-type gel foods, blanched courgette or cucumber, and small amounts of frozen foods such as daphnia or micro-worms. The fish is diurnal to crepuscular in its foraging activity and will graze throughout the day in a well-lit, biofilm-rich tank. Starvation in inadequately mature tanks is the primary cause of death in captive hillstream loaches of this type.
Mating
Almost nothing is documented about the reproductive behaviour of Hemimyzon indicus specifically, and published data on mating in the genus Hemimyzon as a whole are sparse. In related hillstream loaches, sexual dimorphism is generally subtle: females in breeding condition tend to be noticeably plumper and broader-bodied when viewed from above, while males may show slightly more developed head musculature. These differences are easiest to see in fish in peak condition.
In the wild, spawning in rheophilic Balitoridae is typically tied to seasonal conditions — changes in water temperature, photoperiod and the onset or recession of monsoon flows that trigger ripening and spawning behaviour. The fast, oxygenated water of the torrent zone provides the environmental cues and the substrate (rock crevices, gravel beds) that would be used for egg deposition. Whether H. indicus undertakes any form of migration or shows courtship display in advance of spawning is not recorded.
Breeding
Hemimyzon indicus has not been bred in the aquarium, and there is no published record of captive spawning in this species. It is an egg-scatterer with no parental care: in the wild, eggs are presumably deposited among rocks or gravel in fast water, and neither parent guards or tends the clutch after laying.
Some related hillstream loaches — notably Sewellia lineolata from the Annamite ranges of Vietnam — have been successfully spawned in well-established aquaria with strong, turbulent flow, a mature biofilm surface, and appropriate seasonal simulation of temperature and current variation. Whether H. indicus could be bred under similar conditions is unknown, but the preconditions would be the same: a large, mature, high-flow river tank, clean and cool water, a healthy group of well-conditioned fish, and patience. The honest position for this recently described species is that captive breeding has not been achieved and is likely to remain very rare even if attempted.
In the aquarium
Hemimyzon indicus is a demanding, specialist fish not suitable for a general tropical community aquarium. The two critical requirements — cool, fast, highly oxygenated water and a mature biofilm surface — are in direct conflict with the warm, still water and bare or freshly-planted décor of most community tanks. Keepers interested in this species need to set up a dedicated hillstream tank: a long aquarium with a powerful circulation pump creating a unidirectional, river-like current across smooth river stones and boulders. Water temperature should be kept in the cooler range typical of hillstream loaches (approximately 68–75 °F); the tank should not be placed near a heat source. A mature algae and biofilm layer on the rocks is essential before any fish are added — this is not optional.
Because the skin is near-scaleless, the fish is sensitive to copper-based treatments and should never receive full-strength medication doses if treatment is necessary. Despite the torrent zone being a challenging habitat for pathogens, hillstream loaches in aquaria can still contract ich and bacterial infections; treat with species-appropriate products at reduced dose. Group size and social dynamics are not well documented for this species, but hillstream loaches are generally not strongly territorial and can be kept in small groups in a sufficiently spacious tank with adequate flow and biofilm. Given its small adult size (~1.5 in SL), even a moderately-sized aquarium of 23.5–31.5 in with the right flow regime and substrate maturity can work. The fish is not aggressive and can be housed with other cool-water, flow-adapted species, but should not be combined with warm-water tropicals.
Conservation
Hemimyzon indicus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. It was described only in 2018, and formal conservation evaluations for recently described species from the northeast Indian hill tracts typically lag years behind their scientific description; its status is recorded here as Not Evaluated (NE).
The species is known from a restricted area of the Kaladan River basin in Mizoram — a range that, while not definitively quantified, is likely small given the specificity of its rheophilic habitat requirements. Fast, clear-water torrent streams in this region of northeast India face pressure from deforestation and resulting increases in sedimentation, small-scale damming for water supply and hydropower, and agricultural run-off that can alter water chemistry and reduce the biofilm quality on which the species depends. Northeast India and the adjacent Myanmar hill ranges contain many stream-specialist fish that remain data-poor, and several are now known to be of conservation concern even before formal assessment. Whether H. indicus is rare, locally common, or genuinely widespread within the Kaladan system is not yet determined. It has not appeared in the aquarium trade to any documented degree, and there is no current evidence of collection pressure.
