Hemimyzon nanensis, the Nan hillstream loach, is a small, torpedo-flat balitorid from the cool, turbulent headwaters of the Mae Nam Nan River in northern Thailand — the first member of its genus found outside China and Taiwan when it was described in 1998. Like every hillstream loach it is built for life pressed against rock in whitewater: its body is broad and flattened, its fins spread wide, and its belly is modified into a friction pad that anchors it against fast current. It grazes diatoms, algae and biofilm from stone surfaces, and it will starve in a bare or newly set-up tank where none of that film has had time to accumulate. This is a specialist's fish: rewarding for the keeper who provides cool, highly oxygenated, powerfully flowing water over a mature, algae-rich rockscape, and a slow, certain decline for one who does not.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemimyzon nanensis was described in 1998 by Doi and Kottelat from specimens collected in the Mae Nam Nan drainage of northern Thailand, making it the first known representative of the genus Hemimyzon outside China and Taiwan and extending the genus's known range into mainland Southeast Asia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer et al., California Academy of Sciences) treats Hemimyzon nanensis as a valid species and the family Balitoridae as its family placement.

Hemimyzon belongs to the subfamily Balitorinae, the torrent balitorids or hillstream loaches — a group of flattened, fast-water-adapted cypriniform fishes distributed across South and East Asia. The genus is distinguished from many related hillstream loach genera by the fact that its pelvic fins, though broad and held horizontally, do NOT fuse into a true sucking disc as in Gastromyzon or Glaniopsis; the fish still clings to rock primarily through the friction of its flattened ventral surface. There are no synonyms or subsequent name changes on record for this species.

Morphology

Hemimyzon nanensis is a small, strongly dorsoventrally flattened loach reaching a maximum standard length of around 2 in (approximately 2 in). Like all members of the family Balitoridae it is built for life in fast water: the head and body are broad and depressed, the paired fins are held horizontally and wide, and the entire ventral surface acts as a friction pad against the substrate. The snout is blunt and the mouth opens ventrally and anteriorly, fitted for rasping biofilm and algae directly from stone surfaces.

The pelvic fins of Hemimyzon are notably broad and paired but, critically, do NOT form a unified suction disc — a key diagnostic character separating the genus from several superficially similar hillstream genera. The skin is largely scaleless, or carries very small, deeply embedded scales, giving the body a smooth, almost naked feel. This near-scalelessness has direct care implications: like other balitorids, Hemimyzon nanensis absorbs water-borne chemicals readily, making it sensitive to copper-based treatments and full-strength doses of many fish medications.

Habitat

Hemimyzon nanensis is endemic to the upper Mae Nam Nan River basin in Nan Province, northern Thailand, where it inhabits shallow (commonly under 8 in deep), fast-flowing, highly oxygenated riffles, runs and cascades. The water is cool — field data and the SeriouslyFish species profile place the thermal range at approximately 61–72 °F — and very well aerated by its passage over and around rocks and boulders. The substrate is a mix of rock, sand and gravel blanketed with biofilm and algal growth, which constitutes the species' food supply.

This is a clear, cool headwater environment, not a sluggish lowland river. The distinction matters: Hemimyzon nanensis is a rheophilic (current-loving) specialist tied to the Chao Phraya basin's highland tributaries, sitting at the upper elevational edge of the river's catchment. Water chemistry is moderately soft and spans a fairly wide pH range (approximately 6.0–8.0) consistent with upland stream conditions across northern Thailand.

Feeding

Hemimyzon nanensis is a benthic aufwuchs grazer: in nature it rasps diatoms, microalgae, biofilm and the associated microorganisms from the surfaces of rocks in fast current. Its ventrally positioned, adapted mouth is designed for this scraping action, not for picking up sinking pellets or competing at a feeding station.

In captivity, the species requires a mature aquarium where algae and biofilm have had weeks or months to colonise rock and hardscape surfaces — it will starve in a newly established or sterile tank, and this is the single most common cause of death in Hemimyzon kept in aquaria. Strong lighting that promotes algal growth on rocks is essential. The SeriouslyFish profile notes that quality dried foods with a vegetable or algae base and occasional frozen foods such as bloodworm can be accepted once the fish has settled, but these supplements do not replace a living biofilm surface as the dietary foundation. Keepers should regard the mature, algae-covered rockscape as non-negotiable, not optional.

Mating

No information on the sexual dimorphism or mating behaviour of Hemimyzon nanensis has been published. Among hillstream loaches more broadly, sexing is typically possible only in ripe adults, where females are noticeably plumper across the abdomen due to the developing egg mass; males of many species are otherwise externally identical or show only subtle differences in the shape of the rostral cap or pectoral fins.

Mating in hillstream loaches is generally assumed to involve the male closely following and pressing against the female during spawning, with eggs deposited among stones and coarse gravel in fast water. Whether Hemimyzon nanensis follows this pattern is unknown: the species has not been observed spawning in nature or in captivity to any recorded degree, and the account here is extrapolated from the broader balitorid pattern.

Breeding

Breeding of Hemimyzon nanensis in the aquarium is unrecorded. The SeriouslyFish profile states explicitly that captive reproduction has not been documented for this species. This is the honest position: the fish is not bred in home aquaria, and any claim of reliable captive spawning would require published or credibly documented evidence that does not currently exist.

Among hillstream loaches generally, a few species — notably Sewellia lineolata — have been spawned in mature, strongly flowing river-style aquaria, with eggs deposited and buried among stones and gravel; no parental care is provided. It is plausible, by analogy with these close relatives, that Hemimyzon nanensis could scatter eggs among substrate pebbles in a mature high-flow setup, but this remains speculative. Keepers should buy this fish to observe and maintain, not to breed it, and should be skeptical of anecdotal claims to the contrary unless they can be verified. The trade in this species, to the extent one exists, draws on wild-collected fish.

In the aquarium

Hemimyzon nanensis is a demanding species suited to a specialist hillstream setup, not a general community tank. The non-negotiable requirements are cool water (61–72 °F), very strong water flow (the SeriouslyFish profile recommends 10–15 times the tank volume per hour in turnover), and excellent oxygenation — conditions that replicate a northern Thai mountain stream riffle. A powerhead or river manifold positioned to drive a steady, broad current across a flat, rocky substrate is the right approach; a simple filter outlet is insufficient.

The second non-negotiable is biological maturity. Hemimyzon nanensis grazes biofilm: the rocks, slate and boulders in the tank must be colonised with algae and diatom films before the fish is introduced, and strong lighting should be maintained to keep that growth going. A sparse, bright, well-flowed tank set up a month or two before the fish arrives is appropriate; a newly scaped tank with bare rock is not.

The species should be kept in small groups of four or more, as solitary individuals can be shy and more prone to stress. The tank must be covered tightly — Hemimyzon are capable climbers and can exit through small gaps. Being near-scaleless, the fish absorbs medications through its skin readily; copper treatments and full-strength doses of many common remedies should be avoided or used at half dose with caution. It is worth noting that this species was described as likely not yet exported into the mainstream aquarium trade as of its profile date, so availability may be limited to specialist importers.

Conservation

Hemimyzon nanensis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, most recently evaluated in 2011. The DD category reflects a genuine lack of population data rather than a finding that the species is secure — it means insufficient information exists to place the species into a threat category, not that it is safe. Given that the species is an endemic restricted to the upper Mae Nam Nan basin in a single Thai province, it occupies a naturally limited geographic range and is potentially vulnerable to any deterioration of its headwater stream habitat.

The principal pressures on highland stream fauna in northern Thailand are those common across mainland Southeast Asia: watershed clearance and its effects on sediment load and water temperature, hydropower development and flow alteration in tributary systems, and agricultural runoff. A warm, silted, low-flow stream is inhospitable to a cool-adapted, high-oxygen hillstream loach, and the species' narrow endemism means there is no nearby population to recolonise a degraded site. A formal population survey and updated IUCN assessment — the 2011 evaluation is now fifteen years old — would be a worthwhile priority for regional freshwater conservationists.
