Hemimyzon ecdyonuroides is a small, flattened hillstream loach from the fast-flowing tributaries of the Mekong basin in southern Vietnam and Laos, first described in 2002 by Jörg Freyhof and Fabian Herder from the River Pako in Kontum Province. Like all members of its family Balitoridae, it has evolved a ventral sucker formed by its pectoral and pelvic fins that lets it cling to bare rock in the teeth of a current — a life strategy so unlike a conventional aquarium fish that it demands an equally unconventional tank. It is a biofilm grazer that starves without a mature, algae-covered rockscape and suffocates in warm, still water; get those two things right, however, and it is a captivating and long-lived resident of a river-display aquarium. Its species name is a tribute to the mayfly genus Ecdyonurus, whose nymphs occupy the same torrential habitat.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemimyzon ecdyonuroides was described by Jörg Freyhof and Fabian Herder in 2002 on material collected from the River Pako, approximately 31 mi north of Kontum in Kontum Province, central Vietnam. The genus Hemimyzon belongs to the family Balitoridae — the hillstream loaches, a clade of dorso-ventrally flattened rheophiles distributed across the fast streams of South and East Asia. No old generic combination has been recorded for this species; the original placement in Hemimyzon remains current under the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS).

The family Balitoridae is sometimes treated broadly to include subfamilies Balitorinae, Gastromyzontinae and others, depending on the authority followed. Within Gastromyzontinae, Hemimyzon is a well-established genus of small, dorsally depressed hillstream loaches. The species epithet ecdyonuroides alludes to Ecdyonurus, a genus of rheophilous mayfly whose nymphs cling to the same torrent-swept rock surfaces that the fish inhabits — a neat ecological metaphor embedded in the name.

Morphology

Hemimyzon ecdyonuroides is a strongly depressed, flattened loach whose body is essentially streamlined for life in a current. The head and trunk are broad and low, with the pectoral and pelvic fins held horizontally and enlarged to form a ventral adhesive surface — not a true sucker in the anatomical sense, but functionally similar: the fish presses itself against rock and uses negative pressure and fin action to resist the flow. This configuration allows it to anchor on smooth, fast-swept boulders and to move deliberately across them while feeding.

The skin is near-scaleless and delicate, providing little barrier against waterborne chemicals — a point that becomes critical when treating disease. A sharp erectile suborbital spine is present as in other balitorids, and can be erected as a defensive response. As a small species of its genus, maximum total length is modest; precise maximum-size data for this species are sparse in the published literature, but related Hemimyzon species typically reach 2–3 in TL. The coloration in life is brown to olive-brown dorsally, with patterning that provides camouflage against the rocky substrate; the ventral surface is pale.

Habitat

The species is known from the Sekong and Sesan river drainages in southern Vietnam and Laos — two major tributaries of the lower Mekong. Its type locality, the River Pako in Kontum Province, is a fast-flowing highland stream typical of the upper Sekong watershed: clear, cool, highly oxygenated water running over bedrock and boulders, with little suspended sediment and a current strong enough to require adhesion rather than simple bottom-resting.

This is a cool, high-flow, high-oxygen specialist. The prevailing stream conditions at such elevations in the Annamite range are distinctly cooler than the lowland Mekong mainstream, with temperatures that fluctuate seasonally but that generally remain well below the warm tropical baseline assumed for most aquarium fish. Water chemistry is typically soft to moderately hard and near neutral. Hemimyzon ecdyonuroides is a rheophile in the strictest sense — an animal whose physiology is calibrated for continuous fast-water oxygenation and whose behavioural repertoire is entirely oriented around adhesion to, and foraging across, hard substrates in a current.

Feeding

Hemimyzon ecdyonuroides is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. In its native torrents it rasps the surface films of algae, diatoms and associated micro-organisms from rock faces using a downward-facing, fleshy mouth adapted for close-contact browsing. This is a fundamentally different feeding mode from most aquarium fish, and it has a practical consequence that cannot be overstated: the species starves in a newly set-up or barren tank. It requires a mature aquarium in which the rockwork carries a visible growth of algae and biofilm before the fish arrives; establishing that culture may take months.

In a mature river-tank setup, the diet can be supplemented with sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, blanched greens such as courgette and cucumber, and small frozen invertebrate foods including bloodworm and Daphnia. Periodic spot-feeding on the glass or on flat stones is the most reliable way to ensure individuals are actually eating. The fish should be watched at feeding time; competition at food sites can be intense among multiple specimens, and thin individuals need to be identified early.

Mating

Virtually nothing is documented about sexual dimorphism or mating behaviour in Hemimyzon ecdyonuroides specifically. In related hillstream loaches, mature females are typically slightly broader-bodied and rounder in profile when in condition, while males may show subtle differences in the shape of the pectoral fins; these distinctions are often impossible to assess reliably in lean or sub-adult fish. There are no published accounts of pair formation, courtship rituals or territorial behaviour for this species.

In the wild, it is likely that spawning is linked to the hydrology of the monsoon cycle, as is the case for many Mekong-drainage loaches — rising water levels, changes in flow and temperature, and the flush of new productivity across the substrate may all serve as spawning cues. Reproducing those triggers in an aquarium is not a realistic goal with current knowledge of the species.

Breeding

There are no documented accounts of Hemimyzon ecdyonuroides spawning in an aquarium. Like the great majority of hillstream loaches, it is honestly described as not bred in captivity. The breeding biology of hillstream balitorids generally involves egg-scattering among stones or gravel in fast-flowing water, with no parental care; a few genera — most notably Sewellia — have been spawned by experienced keepers in mature, strongly-flowing river tanks, but Hemimyzon has not been among them to any documented extent.

Keepers should buy this fish to observe and enjoy it, not with expectations of breeding. The trade is supplied almost entirely by wild-caught individuals collected from their native Mekong-tributary streams. For anyone determined to attempt spawning, the prerequisites would be a mature, high-flow biotope tank replicating Annamite stream conditions, well-conditioned fish over a period of months, and patience — but a successful outcome cannot be promised on present knowledge.

In the aquarium

Hemimyzon ecdyonuroides is an advanced-keeper fish, not a beginner purchase. Its demands are specific and non-negotiable: cool, clean, highly oxygenated water with a strong and consistent current; a mature tank where flat rocks, smooth boulders and the glass panels carry a genuine biofilm; and a stable, low temperature well within the range typical of its highland-stream habitat (around 64–75 °F is a reasonable target). A powerhead or wavemaker producing a directed flow across a flat rock surface, pointed slightly upward to oxygenate the water column, is the standard setup in river-tank displays. Canister filtration with additional spray bars suits this type of aquarium well.

The tank should be fully cycled and ideally running for several months before the fish arrive — the biofilm accumulation is not a luxury but a necessity. A tight-fitting lid is important, as hillstream loaches can and do climb glass and silicone seams. Hemimyzon can be kept in small groups; it is not obligate-social in the way botiid loaches are, but multiple specimens distributed across a well-rockscaped tank appear less stressed than singletons. Because the skin is near-scaleless, copper-based medications and full-strength formulations of many treatments must be avoided; use half-doses of copper-free medications and treat with caution. The fish is sensitive to temperature rise — even a few degrees above its comfort range suppresses activity and immune function.

Conservation

Hemimyzon ecdyonuroides is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient (DD), reflecting the limited information available about its population size, population trend and extent of occurrence at the time of assessment. This status is typical of many small, range-restricted stream loaches from the Mekong region, particularly those described in the early 2000s from limited survey material.

The species is known from the Sekong and Sesan drainages — river systems that face cumulative pressure from hydroelectric dam construction, deforestation and agricultural run-off across the Annamite highlands of Vietnam and Laos. Hillstream obligates with narrow distributions and highly specific habitat requirements are among the freshwater groups most vulnerable to flow alteration and habitat degradation; a species that needs cold, fast, oxygenated water over clean bedrock cannot persist in the slow, warm, sediment-laden water below a reservoir. The aquarium trade's exposure to this species appears minimal — it is not a common or widely traded fish — but the wild-capture origin of any specimens that do reach the hobby should be noted and sourced carefully.
